Do you think elder people have the tendency of talking to themselves?

Have you discovered that some elderly people have this tendency talking to themselves? I don't know whether it is an aged thing that is normal to everyone. I saw a lot of people, especially older people would do something like that. Take my mother for instance, from time to time, while she was washing the dishes, she would like to mumbling on her own, it seems to me that she was talking to herself. Usually, I just leave her alone, and let her be. Sometimes, I was joking with her, ask her who she was chatting to. What do you think?

I spend half my life thinking I'm talking to myself for all the notice anyone pays to what I say LOL. In truth with my elderly mother it's almost as if the older she gets the more the thinking becomes thinking aloud and then outright talking to herself. I am not sure she realises what she is doing and it's "interesting" discovering her true opinion without asking for it (or her realising she is giving it). Which makes one owonder do we do it without realising and if not will we know when we start :-&.

I am not elderly, but I talk to myself all the time. I have some really good conversations with myself. LOL I have a tendency to think aloud for some odd reason, but it seems to help me keep my thoughts straight...

i don't think so... my mum and dad are quite old already but i never heard them talking to themselves... also, i have few elderly uncles and aunties in my church and i never heard them mumbling to themselves as well... so i think this doesn't apply to every old people... take care and have a nice day...

Well I was only saying to myself the other day.....!!!
I have actually always talked to myself a lot - I find that most of teh time I'm the only one who listens anyway!!
If I am doing something new I tend to talk out load to myself as I do it - perhaps that is because I am getting old - who knows!!

Yeah, I think there is such a tendency. I can see it even on myself, when I'm talking to younger people than me. In many cases I'm telling them what I HAVE DONE, how the things have to be done ACCORDING TO ME and things like that...
But I think that these sometimes boring talkings of the elder people (for themselves) come by the time when the same elder people were younger and listened to other elder people, who talked for themselves too :-) These kind of talkings are something like dominating over youth...

Actually, talking to yourself helps you cope with problems that can't be solved immediately or helps you organize your thoughts. I bet they're not really 'talking to themselves'. It's voicing out your thoughts so it becomes clear to you.

I heard many elderly people talking to themselves.I reckon that's because they feel lonely and can't find someone who would like to talk with them.Or the reason is that as they getting older, they can't control themselves and speak out their own thoughts.Whatever the reasons may be,it is a common phenomenom among elder people.
