My Boyfriend's Dog

I have never had a dog before even though I have always wanted one. Since I was a kid I have wanted pit bulls. Over the past few months I have fallen in love with my boyfriends Rott, Vengeance. He is one of the most loving dogs I have ever met. He has the sweet and playful aspects that people love in a lab type, but he also makes me feel safe and protected. I love knowing that if I take him with me I have nothing to worry about and nobody can come in while I'm sleeping. Plus he is a fantastic foot warmer when we watch a movie and he makes a great cuddle buddy when my guy isn't home.
I may love this dog but I do have some concerns. I do not have a great deal of experience with the breed and I am curious if there is anything I should know. How are they with children, house guests and neighbors? I have heard that Rott's are very territorial when it comes to places and people. Are there any warning signs that I should be aware of or tricks I can keep up my sleeve?

It may sound trite, but have you ever watched The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Milan? He often talks about the stigma over so called "dangerous breeds" and shows that with the right discipline, they can be lovely pets with other animals and children too. His long term companion was an American pitbull called, Daddy, and he was so sweet and gentle.
Our local mechanic has a rottweiler crossed with a Rhodesian Ridgeback and it's the soppiest dog you could meet. Yet that was a breed created to hunt lions!
Vengeance made me
We have two cats called Voodoo and Zombie. Mr. really wants a Huskamute to call, Buliwyf after the Viking in The 13th Warrior.

I have never seen the dog whisperer but I will have to check it out. I have always thought that the poor impressions people have come from the dogs that have been mistreated and raised to be hostile. I really believe that all dogs can be fantastic family pets as long as they are raised in a loving home. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I totally agree with you. I think it's the way an animal is raised that will predict its personality. Give Vengeance a for me.

I have heard these things before which is where some of my concerns come in. However, I have never known anyone that has had trouble with a Rott. They really are very loving dogs and I know that Vengeance would never hurt someone on purpose unless they were hurting one of us. I can understand where you're coming from and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

I am sorry you're not a pet person. The right pet can bring a lot of joy into someone's life. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and I hope your day is nice as well.

a rotweiller? ahah for sure no one will get close to you when you are sleeping^^ they are dangerous and yes i guess they attack people that they feel are a threat to you. but with guests you should show the dog that they are friends and dont want to make bad so they wont attack i guess. but maybe you should see some clues online^^ with experts of rotweillers^^ sorry i dont know much bcs i never had one but i know they are tough dogs and need to be careful with them.

I have heard some of the same things. However, I have never actually known anyone that has a had a bad experience with the breed. Many of my worries come from the horror stories that give many dogs a bad name. My guy has had Rott's for most of his life and he says that he's never had one turn on anyone. I guess only time will tell. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
