Is it the lyrics of the songs or the music that appeals to you most?

I like this evergreen song 'Islands in the stream' by Kenny Rogers in duet with Dolly Parton, that evergreen song mesmerized me to no end. I keep listening to this song as it has a very meaningful lyrics that remind me of someone that I have loved and lost. I keep that song in my profile so whenever I am mylotting I let Kenny Rogers husky voice serenade me while I think of words to put in my discussions.
Sometimes music and songs helps in keeping our sanity intact. The music and lyrics of yesteryears songs compliment well and is so soothing to the ears. Comparatively the new age songs are no match as their lyrics are laced with vulgarity and the music is deafening. What is there in hip hops and the like that are only catering to certain age group?

Hi zandi...
Mostly i prefer the lyrics ( i am also a lyricist but not established. lol) but sometimes there are some good music as well where there is no value of the lyric. Perhaps you have heard the oscar awarded song of A. R. Rahman as Jai ho.... I think it's music which has crowned it. have a nice day.

More often than not it is the music that appeal. That is no real surprise as I generally prefer classical music. With modern music there are some tracks for which the lyrics do appeal.
Modern favourites for me are likely to be 80's or 90's music.

It is the music that appeals to me the most. I enjoy opera even although I do not understand the words. I absolutely HATE rap as there is nothing musical about that genre of "music"!

I usually listen to the lyrics but the music is what draws me in. I love instrumental guitar so I tend to lean towards music that speaks on another level. There are a few songs that I know all the words to but I also know the music is what drives a song. Otherwise it would just be a poem.

The lyrics of the song and it's music are what I am for. Although I'm on my early 50's, I still like the slow rock music like the music of the Nazareth, Foreigner, Scorpions and Bon Jove. I also love the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. I also like ballad music, instrumental and acoustic. Like you, I don't like the hip hops. For the music of the new generation, I like the group Backstreet Boys, Train, NSync, and Alicia Keys.

hi zandi its a combo of both for me and I do love Kennyrogers
voice and Dolly Parton's always a shoo in for me. but I have not heard that particular song. I fell in love with the Beatles old song I can't Help Falling in Love With YOU. the melody suited the lyrics and that song hung in my mind for ages. I detestt hip hop and always have. I want my music to soothe me not infuriate me., lol

The oldies are nostalgic and they can really evoke the inner feelings and some of the lyrics bring tears to the eyes. But they are still my favorites. Singers like Tom Jones, Engelbert, Elvis, Don Williams to name a few are still popular even to the young listeners.

I look for the lyrics instead of the music itself when i'm listening to a track but i don't ignore the instrumentals. I think that's why i loved rage against the machine and audioslave. I loved zack dela rocha's lyrics and tom morello's guitar riffs.

I like to listen old romantic songs, the lyrics of those songs are really amazing and the music is always appealing.
Being romantic by nature, I always concentrate on lyrics of the songs but beside lyrics it is also the music which makes my feelings. I like the songs having good lyrics and music, and I think both are compulsory for a song to be liked...

I just finished watching the movie Music and Lyrics starring Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant when i saw this discussion. In the movie, Sophie Fisher (played by Drew Barrymore) stressed that a melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the 2 that makes it magical. So if you asked me,I think lyrics and music are equally appealing.

I'm usually oblivious to the lyrics of a song. Even if it's complete and utter bullcrap I'll sing it like it won the Grammy's for Best Lyrics Ever Created By Man (if there was one). What I'm saying is that I usually identify the beat. It's the beat that keeps my head bobbing and my feet jumping. You can sing the lyrics all you want, but you know that it's the beat that got you attracted to the song in the first place!

I trained as a musician since a very young age on piano and I come from very musical family. So I would say that it is firstly the tune that grabs me first of all, because I tend to think more musically and lyrically. But I can appreciate some good and clever lyrics, especially since I attended a writing class a the local uni and learned about what makes and good poem._Derek

i USE TO REALLY LIKE THAT SONG TO.I haven't heard it in a long time. I am a country music fan [oldies] & love the 50's & 60's music to. I'm a huge elvis fan. I never listen to new country because it's not country to me. I can't stand the new music that's out nowadays. Guess i'm showing my age but it just sounds like a bunch of loud racket to me.

Most of the time, I want songs that have great lyrics. But because we are talking about music, so the tone and melody of the song is also important. But there are just some songs that no matter how good their melodies are, I just can't find myself to like. One example is the song "Lips of an Angel" by Hinder. I really like the tone of the guys voice and the music was also good, but the lyrics is just against my moral code. LOL
I like Japanese and Chinese songs even if my Nihongo and Mandarin are extremely limited. These are the times when I have no idea what the lyrics are, but I still like the song (initially). However I still look for translations online just to make sure that the lyrics are not foul in any way. :)

I read the lyrics or the meaning of the song first before I get to like the music. More on love songs. I don't like hip-hop because I don't understand the meaning. Just the Boom Boom. But hip-hop songs are creative. When we want to unwind, it's nice not to think about things but just listen to the beat.
