I think there may be a theory that eye glasses, while helping you see better, makes your eyes weaker because your eyes come to depend on it. Is there any truth to this theory?
I am middle age and i'm begining to notice that i see print better when i hold it away from my face.

well, if you're wearing the wrong prescription, it'll probably make your eye sight worse. better have your eyes checked before just wearing any glasses :)

Yeah I have heard that theory too.... My mom is a Yoga teacher and she tells me that wearing glasses wont reduce the defect but would make the eyes weaker in the long run... May be she is right... And according to her... we can get rid of the glasses by doing some therapy.... Its some kind of an eye treatment... Using basic things.... The centre for this treatment is at Pondicherry in India.... The Aurobindo Ashram....

well, there can be some truth to the fact that your eyes don't have to "exercise" if you wear glasses all the time
My eye doc says because I only wore the glasses when I needed them for driving and the like, I did a good service giving my eyes exercise...
However, with age comes problems.
As you age, your muscles because stiffer, even in the eyes and you can no longer focus the same as you did when you were younger.
I have always been somewhat near sighted, well, now I need glasses for both distance and close up, but for the medium distances I still don't wear my glasses.
In fact, on the whole, I can't tell when I'm cooking if I'm doing a good job when I wear my glasses because its right outside the reading glasses distance and much too close for the distance glasses. Tonight, while we were fixing a few dishes for a party tomorrow, I actually was wearing my reading glasses because I was working in my "reading" distance with the food I was prepping.

I remember being told when I was still in high school many years ago, that as we age our eyes will actually become "near sighted." Sounds like this is happening to bot you and me, because as I try to read smaller print, I have to do the same thing to focus on each word.

hi.
Well what glasses were you wearing? Was it the correct prescribed one?
If yes then your eye power might have come back a little, thats the reason why you are able to see bit clear when you hold your glasses a bit far. Its high time, please go and consult an eye specialist and have a new prescription, and get the glasses.
Its a myth that, glasses weaken the eyes. Ya your eyes might get affected if you wear a wrongly prescribed or just any glasses.

I do not wear glasses, and have not needed them-that is perhaps until now. last check up my eyes were fine-one eye a bit stronger than the other, but did not need glasses at my last check up.
Anyway, as i said, i am middle aged and lately i find i see print much better if i hold it away from my face.

Then please go and have your eyes checked again, because if its the case of Myopia then restoration to original power although rare, takes a very long time.
Please see an eye specialist soon.

To a certain extent they might. I think it is very minimal but they are needed. You might be onto something however. I have noticed a similar deal with people who take medicine every time they are sick versus people who only take medicine when they absolutely, positively have to like me. I don't get sick as often, they get sick harder and more often, because they come to depend on the medicine. At least that is the way I see things.
Still it is an interesting theory. I don't know how I can get along without my glasses all of the time. Basically if my glasses get broken or lost, then I am pretty much out of luck. Still they are important. We grow dependent on them maybe a little bit, because we are getting used to them but it is because they are becoming a part of our eyes. That is just the way things go.
