Yes avg is one of the top free and most trusted anti-virus programs on the internet currently.I use it and it has protected my computer from viruses for many years and I think that it outperforms even some of the software that you have to pay for to own.It has frequent updates to keep up with the current viruses and the interface is simple and easy to use.I think you should give it a try as since it is free you can never go wrong. cheers!

AVG 2010 is by far the best Free Anti Virus that is available . In my experience I found the AVG 2010 free version detected and removed several more threats from a pen drive immediately after it was inserted , while the paid version of Avira couldnt even detect them after manually scanning the Pen Drive . So personally i feel AVG is the Best FREE anti virus available out there . But if you go for paid version I would suggest Kaspersky as it gives more protection than the AVG paid version .

Good thing you opened this discussion, now people here shared the anti-viruses they know. It helped me to know what to get. I'll download avg and avira to my computers at home and test them what is the best anti-virus.

I trust Comodo Internet Security more than the rest.
I have used other anti-virus software, but my current vote is for CIS.
Most anti-virus software are good at detecting already identified malware, and the respective creators are proud of this fact. But the majority are unable to detect new attack variants.
I suggest you go to www.matousec.com before making a final decision.
The latest CIS version puts less strain on system resources.
On the other hand if you prefer something simple then CIS is not for you.

AVG SUCKS!!! It uses way more resources than it needs to.
I use spyware doctor and threatfire by pctools. they are free and they rock
