With tight income and the availability of viewing movies at home. Going out to the movies is something everyone is doing less. But it does seem like everyone still goes every once a in a while.
Personally I only go now for large events like Avatar and Star Trek where I know the opening night atmosphere will only increase my experience and pretty much guarantee the night is fun even if a bad movie.
So what makes you spend the money to go see something? Favorite actor, director, or series of films...

It's the ambience and occasion. There are so many cinemas around in my country and we need not stick to just one. Though movie tickets are expensive but it's only once in a while. Somehow or other, the feel is different when we are watching movies at home and in cinema. I feel more at ease in the cinema than being home. At least I know after movies, I can hang around with my bf or head somewhere else. But at home, I will feel lazy to leave my house, and end up spending the weekend at home.

Usually, I'll go see a movie at the cinema, if it's a movie that I absolutely want to see and just don't want to wait. Once in a while, it really doesn't hurt to actually treat yourself to this type of outing. It's true that nowadays we can't always afford to do it all the time, but once in a while it's nice to be able to go out and see a movie, as opposed to stay home all the time. Sometimes, you need a change.

Not going out to them as often does mean we treasure them more when we do. So it does make the experience better in that reference. Perhaps it's better like this?

Actually, I'm not a big movie goer. I don't have the attention span for it even now that movies are much shorter than when I was young. I also find the cinema chairs cramped and uncomfortable. Having said that, when the new cinema opened here (almost 10 yrs ago now) I did go to the opening night gala and I saw Lord of the Rings. Apart from that, I think I've been to see 3 movies since then.

I've been to some uncomfortable places as well. Bad seats with not enough room makes almost any movie feel like an endurance test. I saw all 3 LOTR movies on opening nights, they were a lot of fun, although the amount of costumes @ the 3rd was kinda disturbing, even as a fan.

I only go to the cinema if it's a movie that I can't wait till it comes out on DVD. Movies are so expensive these days that you can't go out that often. Lately, there haven't been a lot of movies that are worth seeing in the cinema, so its not hard waiting for the DVD to come out.

I agree there hasn't been tons of quality movies that are must see in theaters. DVD is just fine, and often better to be able to adjust sound and pause as needed.

I'm the same way I just go for major movies that are as you said going to be really good because of the audience. Lately though I have just been watching movies at home and enjoying time with my family. I never did like big crowds but sometimes I suppose it is good to get out so I do splurge a bit but working so many long hours doesn't really give me time to want to go out again.

My husband and I saw so many movies in the last month of my pregnancy because I was so uncomfortable and needed to get out and get my mind off of it. I've only seen one movie in the theatre since, and it's not just money, but making sure there's someone to watch the baby! We rent or borrow movies from friends all the time, though.

I think there are movies that are worth watching in cinemas and there are those which I think would be fine if watched at home. Movies that boast great cinematography, sound effects and 3D enhancements should indeed be watched at cinemas because our home theater wouldn't do justice to the effort film makers did for the production of such a film. Movies like 'Despicable Me', 'Up', 'Inception' and the like would be best seen in Cinemas.
Further, there are those with equally great story lines which I think don't need to be watched in cinemas, not because we're trying to be frugal (of course we are) but since there are some features at home that I feel would best fit a particular movie. One movie I have in mind that needs to be watched at home would be 'Eat, Pray, and Love' simply because these types of films are story-based and would much be appreciated within the comforts of home. These however, doesn't mean that the films we watch at home are of lesser quality. It simply means that the 'mood' of home fits my idea of how to appreciate such stories or movies.
Though of course, for most part, it's about the money and how much you'd save if you don't go to the theaters. Instead just watch films at home.

Most romantic movies are much better at home with a loved one. A lot of kids/family movies are also better enjoyed at home having fun and laughing w/out worry if annoying others.
But your right, most the time it sadly does come to money. I would see movies in a lot more genre's that are produced for the theater, if they were cheaper. But with the cost, gotta save, pick and choose.

it is one of the things to do during a dating. i don't have too much time to be with my boyfriend and it's not available to see a movie with him at home. for me, going see a movie at cinema is a preference. even though it is expensive, but it is worth it.

Usually if it is a good movie, no matter if they are drama or action movie, I will go to the cinema to watch it. It's a very different experience if tyyoyu watch it at home where the sound and ambience is not as good as the cinema. Sometimes I even fall asleep watching at home or not finishing the movie.

I agree with you with the tight income it's so hard to go and watch a movie or do any fun stuff these days. I hardly ever go watch movies at the movies since I have Netflix and Blockbuster online and get them sent to my house. I can see all the movies I want for a set price. The only time I ever really go to the movies these days is when they show a 3D movie that I really want to see. Sooner or later nobody will really be going to the movies when everyone gets the 3D tv then we can watch it at home.

I find it yet more difficult to go to cinemas as the price and cost involved are getting quite especially if there is a family of four, where as the total cost can be almost a week worth of grocery for the home.
However sometimes we need to splurge as hardworking people deserve it from time to time.

For me, its my way of relieving stress. I go for comedy, suspense and action movies especially if its my favorite actor/actress starred in that film. I don't mind spending money for blockbuster movies because you get to enjoy it. Plus, its a different feeling watching movies in theaters large screens, heart pumping sound effects with a pop corn of course.

I will only go to a cinema theatre if I wish to support someone of the team that made the movie.
For example, I see no need to go see some A-list project such as Ocean Eleven.
Though, if a small director that I like releases a movie, I will go see it, and buy merchandising products if I did like it.

Good question, 2EarnMoney2! :) I spend money to see a movie mostly if it was from my favorite novel or series like for example Harry Potter or I've heard a good feedback about a certain movie or I've read/heard of a good review on this movie. And oftentimes I watch a movie if my sister treats me out. hehe... Oh and the trailers that I've seen on preview give an impact on whether or not I feel like watching the movie too. I also feel that some movies can be best seen on the big screen than on dvd or on your computer like Transformers and The Matrix.

My ex and I used to go to the movies all the time when we were just dating and didnt have kids. But after having kids we didnt go out anymore. My ex and I split up 10 months ago. 2 months ago a guy asked me to go with him on a date to dinner and a movie. Then when Jacka$$ 3 just came out in theaters I asked him if he wanted to go with me. Since he paid last time when he asked me to go I wanted to pay this time but he didnt want me to. It was a very nice thing for him to do but I felt bad.

Hi 2EarnMoney2,
I actually haven't been to a theater in years. The cost is way too much and the food way too costly too. I actually have a problem sitting that long staring at a screen and prefer to be at home where I can pause a movie and do something else for a bit and come back to it...rewind it if I missed something. I do, in the summertime, take my grandkids to the drive-in at least once if not more and I always have taken my girls when they were younger. I actually enjoy that. we go in our PJs and spend the afternoon buying snacks, packing the cooler etc. It's an adventure. If I get edgy, I can get out of the car and stretch my legs and not disturb anyone nor miss any of the movie. We get 2 or 3 movies and our money's worth. About the only thing that could drag me to a theater right now is my grandson begging....I'd probably cave. When my girls were young I would just deal with the costs at times because they loved it. A date would get me there. If the right person asked me out and that's what they wanted to do...I'd go.

We have a theater near us that us movies for a buck on Wednesdays. The movies are pretty recent, maybe 2-4 weeks old. That is fine with me, as I am so frugal I don't like to pay full price. I went two weeks ago and watched Inception with my son. Of course with everything there is a catch. I pay $2.00 for both of us to get in, however my son said he would pay for the drinks and popcorn. I ordered a small drink, he ordered a large, we had a medium popcorn and he ordered a box of candy. The bill for the concession stand was $19.50....what a rip-off! I hate to admit it, but I usually will bring our own candy in and I put 2 sodas in my purse. I will splurge on popcorn, but with prices like this..forget it!

Doing less is right, the last time I went to movies I do not even remember. Money is tight these days, I rather stay home and watch it on the tv. There is a lot of movies that on the little screen that I have not seen yet.
