you would say because there are people who don't have the money to go to college. ok I won't denny that this is also a problem that determines some people leave their studies. but there is another category of people who have the posibility to go to college but they choose not to do it just because they think school won't help them with anything. and later, when they realise they won't have the posibility to sustain their family anymore they choose to go to collegae. and it's damn harder to do things this way. so I think school helps you..what about you?

I guess it depends on the priority of the person. If he thinks he wants to live life and earn a living by not attending school, then he may opt not to go to college. After all we have to admit the fact that it is not guaranteed that if you spend additional years in college you will end up having a better life. That is not a hard rule. But attending college helps. For those people who want to spend their life being employed that definitely going to college and earning a degree will help them. But there are also those who want to earn a living not through employment. But rather they may go for entrepreneurship. Although it helps to have some technical knowledge learned through school, entrepreneurship I guess is more on the ability of the person to manage adversities and excel in difficult times. You just to understand what your business is and keep the vision. I hope this has contributed. Feel free to post comments. Thanks!

yes you're right. one of my friend's father had the courage to go to france. he found a man that thrusted him and gave him money to invest in romania and now he has his own business and he has so much money that he doesn't know what to do with them. but he still started attending college recently...why? maybe he considered that it would actualy help him. I think that the top reasons why some chose to give up their studies are financial problems but also that some of us are just too lazy. I agree that it isn't a guarantee that if you go to school you'll have the olife that you dream of. but it surely is a chance to get it...anyway it's everyone's option what they do with their lives

You have the same reason. They don't have money to pay college. They thought it is hard for them a lot. They heard the people said they couldn't find a job that make them afraid. They thought they are wasting their life or lose money.

yes but in the end they will strat to go to college when they get older, when thjey have kids and other resposability..and it's alot harder, or they will just choose to live with a salary that won't give them the satisfaction that they dreamed of. when you don't have a diploma many doors are closen for you, just because of that simple piece of paper.but if you do have it you'll have much more options, posibility and a chance to get a higher salary

I'm glad for you but I think this is important too. I guess that if you are well prepaired for the job you won;t accept being paid less than the cleaning lady. or you would?

You have described my situation...I left high school at the age of sixteen because I desperately wanted to leave school due to issues I had there with completely non supportive parents. Anyway I took a job straight out of school and did not further my education until I was in my thirties and by this stage I was very well aware of the pitfalls of leaving school too early. My advice to young people now is, if you have the opportunity to go to college take it because it is much harder when you're older...

the important thing is that you realised the importance of going to school and you afford doing this because there are lot's of person who can't afford paying the taxes that the college asks for. I have lot's of colleaguse who intend to leave school because they can't affor it anymore and it's sad.

I didn't go to college because I needed to work to support myself. My parents didn't really offer to put me through college or even help with expenses. I tried going part time at a community college but it didn't always work out with my full time job because I had to change shifts periodically. I got a little discouraged because I was only able to take 1 or 2 classes per semester and sometimes none so it would have taken many years to get a bachelors degree. I gave up on school and just worked my job. Looking back on it, I wish I had stuck with it no matter how long it took. I would have been much better off if I had gotten the degree. Now it's too late. I could go back to school and get a degree but it would still take more than 6 years going part time plus it wouldn't really do me any good at my age. Even with a degree, nobody would want to hire an older person "fresh out of college" in a starting position. It can be argued that just having the degree doesn't make you smarter. There are plenty of people without that document that do very well for themselves but that's the exception and not the rule. The fact is that employers want a minimum of a bachelor's degree for any decent paying career. Anyone with a college degree will get the better jobs and higher pay and advanced degrees command even higher salaries. Anyone that thinks a person can do just as well without a college degree is kidding themselves. It's just not true today. Even though it's too late for me, I'm making sure my son is not doing what I did. I made sure he knew the value of a college degree. He is in his third year of college and doing very well. He will have what I didn't and should do very well for himself.

thanks for your answer millertime. you are definitely right. there are poor chances for a person without a degree to advance, to get the cahnce at least of being hired in an important corporation. and about those people who start their own business and achieve success they are just the exception. is ver hard today without a minimum preparation. you can be a visionary but you have to have a preparation for what's expecting you. I'm glad to hear that you teached you child the importance of going to school.good luck.have a nice day

I had parents who didn't like the idea. They thought I would leave their house. I did anyway. Snicker, snicker.

you had to leave sooner or later. you couldn't live with your parenbts for the rest of your life. but this is weird because usually parents want their parents to be independent financialy, to have a house of their own, a family...and you can't achieve those things by living with your parents for the rest of your life

I would have liked to have gone to college. as it was my father & step mother were more interested in what I could earn for them. As a result they set my keep at a rate that I would have to work full time to afford it; so I could not afford college as well. It does make me ask the question why they had children in the first place if they were not interested in them having career prospects? Perhaps because they were born working class they thought that their children should be denied the opportunity to better themselves?

True. I have taken some education of my own accord.

this is weird. because parents usually want their children to have what they didn't have when they were their age. I guess it depends on the way of thinking of your parents. anyway the important thing is that you are ok. and if you really want you could start going to college no matter the age

there are various reasons for this... some people might be lazy... some people really do not have the money to go to college... some people think it is not important because nowadays company value work experiences more than a piece of paper... for me, i finish my degree but still find it hard to find a job without work experiences which is a bit frustrating for me... take care and have a nice day...

yes this is a problem in my contry too. but I don't get it...how on earth they want you to have experience if you only recently graduated.this way they will lose valuable young people who wnat to prove they are good, or if they choose to hire recently garduated students they pay them nothing just because they don't have enough experience. anyway I hopt this problem will be solves in one way or another.

I think you got it right the first time, most people can't afford to go to college. And it's not just the cost of the schooling but also the cost of supporting yourself as most people's parents can't afford to support you. The ones that have the chance to go to college usually do but not all of them. Some people think it will be a waste of time and money, someone is paying for it, but most of the time, I think, they think that way because they really don't know what they would want to take in college. I didn't finish high school, never mind go to college. I got pregnant and back in my day you weren;t allowed to go to school if you were pregnant. It was still shameful back then to get pregnant out of wedlock. And then after I had my baby I tried to go back but I felt so out of place that I couldn't do it. For example, I missed one day of school because I was sick and while I was at home sick the school phoned and thought I was my mom and they asked if I was really at home sick or if I was skipping out of school. Now that was weird and I told them who I was and they laughed and didn't believe me, thought I was just covering up for myself. I wish I had a college degree in something, to this day I wish, but to this day I don't know what degree I would want as I still haven't found what I want to do when I grow up and I am 54 years old. Otherwise I would go back to school right now as I could do it now. If a person is able to continue their education then they should take advantage of that and do it because it will make their life a lot easier when they are older. It will change the whole quality of their lives. Good luck my friend and happy mylotting Chris

some of us didn't get scholarships in high school, and our parents couldn't afford to send us to college, so we didn't get to go to college. I am sure that my dad would have done his best to help me pay for college if I had told him I wanted to go, but my mom was suffering from cancer when I graduated high school, and he had enough of a burden on him with having to deal with that, and the last thing I felt he needed to have to worry about was trying to pay for me to go to classes, so I never tried to go. I did manage to go to a community college where I live now and earn an Associate's degree, and I want to go back to school to finish my bachelor's degree, but I don't know when I will get to do it.

Hi,I'd like to share...I'm from China and most of the Chinese people will choose to go to the college..Most of them will lend money to go to the college if they can't pay the fee(you have to spend so much to go the the college in China)... I think the school helps...But the most important thing is you have to learn more by yourself ,,instead of depending on the school or the teacher...Learning more is always helpful, isn't it?/

yes i agree with you. you'll chose what do you find interesting to learn. plus the teacher can't learn for you. it's important to try to find out new things always and to try to be better and better. but you have to have the right motivations. cheers.have a nice day and thanks for the reply

I do agree with you that financial matters are always the hindrance in going to college. In the case you have just mentioned, parents and High School guidance counselors should really motivate students to go to college and state all the the possible life they would be having if they haven't pursued any career in the future. This way they will clearly know what lies ahead in their lives. So I will say the reason is lack of motivation and guidance.
• Romania
15 Nov 10
yes but there are lots of children who work to support themselves and go to college. so I would better say that the main reason is the lack of motivation. plus the state gives them support if they are really good in what they are doing. so possibility to finish your studies you have. but you onlky have to wish for it enough

Am Stongly with the idea that school helps no matter what people say, it's true that jons isn't that guarantee even if you continue studynig & graduate from high school, but the fact remains, learning is very very important & great thing to do. You know, i graduated from university, i didn't work with my degree license, but am working anyway, & i never regret not for a second, every year i spend in studying.

you're right ansi09...college time is a beautiful period full of new experiences and lot's of interesting people to meet. why jump over this period and strat working when we have all the time in the world to do that. I think that as long as you have the possibility you should enjoy those beautiful years. there are also students who work to support themselves in college becaue their parents can't do that for them. so it's a pitty that young people who have the posibility to study chose to give up

Some people are desperate to go to college. But at times there are limited space available in the study area of their interest (it happens in my country). When the next school year begins, they're lost and therefore decide not to go to college.

Some people don't go to college because of many, many reasons. In my case, since I'm an LPN and can receive a job with a good amount per hour, I don't really need to go to college. The reason why people go to college is to a. Get an education of course or b. To further expand their education or c. Higher income. My reasons for going to college would be because I want a higher income so I can buy more stuff, pay bills, and have money left over for savings or groceries. Other reasons could be because their parents are rich and can pay for them through life. Those are like people who just live off their parents pay check and most likely do poorly in school. But some are smart like their parents and probably like my case can get a job without college.

I have some students who graduate each year. Some of whom choose to take part in the college entrance examination while some others choose to look for a job. Usually most of those who choose to work do not show much interest in study, but quite a few of them will regret a few years later of not going to college. I get to know this from my students who tell me that. But anyway, I don't blame them as it is their choice to do whatever. What I can do is to give them some advice if they need it. Take care.

I think many people get so caught up in making money after high school that they put aside their college plans. Big mistake. Especially if they continue to work for others. As long as you are going to be in a position where you will be an employee instead of an employer it is best to gain suitable qualifications. For those who successfully start their own business taking certain courses in business can even have its benefit to them. It is really hard to try and go off to school after you have started your family especially if there are financial restraints.

I didn't go to college right away. I went into the Air Force first and spent some time in there. While I was in the Air Force I gave birth to my oldest child. When I got out I was focused on trying to make a life for her. I had two more children. I tried several times to go to college but it didn't pan out for me I just wasn't ready. Last year I finally went to college and finished a program it was a defining moment in my life. I'm back in and trying to finish a degree and it's the right choice for me now... but I just wasn't ready at first. Part of that might be that I was homeschooled and finished highschool at the age of 15... part of it was just that I just didn't have clear goals of what I wanted to do with my life yet. I also have a mental disability that makes it hard to focus on my coursework. But in any case I've gone to college now and I'm glad that I have. Now it works for me.
15 Nov 10
I think there are a few reasons for this really, yes money can be a factor, they may not have enough to continue to study, or they may want to go out and find a job and earn money, or they may have just had enough of being educated, or they may not be that clever and so see going to college as a waste of time. I went to college and have done really well, i was going to go to university until my girlfriend fell pregnant and so i went to work as i needed to earn money and so i gave up on my dream of what work i wanted to eventually go in to. The marriage didn't last and i wasted my chance of niversity, but luckily i did well enough at college that i am pretty sure that i will always have a job.
