Hello mylotters. I forgot that I am a godparent now. My godchild's birthday is on December 6 and I need to give her a nice present. I don't know what a 12 month old child needs. Any ideas?

Give gifts that keep on giving. Toys wear out and break and besides Christmas is around the corner. Most little kids are more interested in the wrapping paper and box than they are in the toy itself. Something towards the child's future is usually better. You can create a Upromise account and register your credit/debit cards. Anytime you shop at a place associated with Upromise either online or at a store money is deposited in the account. With the cost of education these days every little bit helps.

Hello Onyxe121, I'm still unemployed. LOL. But that's a good idea for a future gift. I'll make a search about Upromise.

Cool day for a birthday...same day as my grandson's!! Ok so one year old's are pretty easy to please. I would not invest a lot of money in a toy because he'll probably get more than he needs. He probably already has more than he needs. I'd probably get a book that his parents can read him at night. Unless I saw a real need then I would probably put most of the money I'd spend on a gift into a donation to his bank account.

He's only one and doesn't know about material stuff. You could even take him out to lunch and the play ground and spend time with him and it would mean so much. Offer to take him for a day and just spend time with him.

A book is lovely. I don't know what new books are in store. But if I'll get that one for her, I'll pick a classic story. Puff the magic dragon is cute. I'll add that to my list. Thanks a bunch!

I may choose give money to this baby's parents, so they can buy whatever they want. Or I will choose to buy the diapers because baby needs it all the time. It is something pratical. I love China

Oh. But her parents can afford diapers. I think godparents need to give something the baby will enjoy.

It really all depends on what is available in your country, but the key to a good toy at that age is to find something that will help them learn, in a fun way. You also want to find something that will keep them interested throughout the whole year until their next birthday. At this stage in their life, they change so much so fast, so usually something that makes noise, but is somewhat soft for the beginning of the year, but that he/she can interact with throughout the year. There are a lot of choices, but LeapFrog has a great selection of learn and play type toys for all ages. If you get them in the habit of learning as they play now, then they will have an easier time talking, and will learn so much faster when they become school-aged. Another popular thing right now is the "your baby can read" program. A child's brain is almost 90% developed in the first 5 years of their life, so starting them on this program as soon as possible will ensure that they are far more successful in their academics than without the reading knowledge. Its definitely something to think about.

A big and colorful ball is maybe boring to an adult but to a one yr old it would probably be the most amazing gift. It's not a bad idea at all.

I was thinking about a beautiful and colorful ball. But it's boring. I'll search about LeapFrog. Maybe their products are available online. Thanks for the new information. Maybe there are other stuff there for next year too!

I think it would be nice to give 2 small gifts, one the parents could enjoy with the child ( a book ) and something the child would like ( a toy that probably makes noise )-----------------

Oh yeah. In that way, the other gift will be like an advance holiday present. I forgot the festivities are coming fast approaching. Thanks Cicisnana.

Yeah. Clothes will be my last choice. I think a lot will give her clothes. That's why I like to give something special. I missed her baptismal. That's why I need to make it up to her.

i usually give clothes or educational toys for a 12 month old child since they don't understand anything yet at their age... if i can't get what is suitable, the easiest is to give gift voucher to a baby store for the parents and let them choose the gift for the child... i think it is more useful if we don't know what to get rather than buying something for the child that won't be use at the end... take care and have a nice day...

Another great idea. Yeah. I think the parents know what's best for her. I'll look for something like that. Thanks so much. Added it on my list.

At most shops their are age groups you can look at to see what you think the child may like. Do you have any idea what the child likes? If its a boy they tend to like cars and trains and stuff like that. If its a boy they like toy babies and dolls and stuff like that. I tend to buy things that help children learn like buses with letters on that they can interact with or musical toys because kids of that age like musical toys.

It's my problem too. Aside from the fact that I have low budget, I can't decide on what to give to my godchild.

Hello! there's so many gift ideas to choose from if you wanted to give your 1 year old godchild a gift. A nice dress is good, for she can use that. Others just gave baby diapers or milk formula because that's the basic need of a child and she could use that surely. You may also gave her a much more valuable item if you wanted your godchild to really remember you, LOL! jewelries will be fine (simple, plain ones without diamonds, fitted for young kid) or if you wanted to excuse yourself from thinking, just gave her cash so the parent instead could use it for child's needs or savings maybe. Good morning!

Hello jinjer168, Oh, I don't like giving needs. I much prefer the wants. But I still don't know what she wants. A dress is a good idea. She can use it when she goes to church. I never thought about it. I was thinking about casual baby shirts. Thanks!

Perhaps, you can ask the mother of a child on what she wants to receive for her baby. I also suggest that you can buy him/her a clothes that he/she can used for such a long time or an educational toys for 1 yr old child. Anything that would last and used are the best gift. Happy Mylotting!

I was thinking of surprising the my friend what to give her child. She knows I have good taste. But, I don't have a taste for kids. If I can't think of any, I'll give her clothes. LOL

Hi Beeh13u Child? They aren’t quite a “baby” in the same sense as they were just a few months ago. Many of them are walking around, exploring, getting into things, and developing very specific tastes. Everything is still tested out in their mouths, so toys with small parts still aren’t a good idea, yet many of them have outgrown the teething rings, rattles, and floor gyms that made good gifts in their younger days. When kids are around one year of age, the regular sneakers just didn’t cut it for them. They were too stiff and made walking a bit difficult. Enter the soft sole shoe. You can give them soft star shoe and they come in so many cute patterns and styles. I think it ll be very good gift for a one year old walking baby...:)) Have a nice day...

I think toys are great gifts for children. Let them enjoy while they're still young. The appropriate or best toys for a 1 year old child are those that stimulate the senses which are particularly the senses of sound, sight, and touch. Textured, colorful, noise-making toys are great for them. It will attract their attention well like musical toys, pop-up toys, rubber blocks, dolls or puppets, push and pull toys, among others. There are lots of entertaining as well as educational toys for 1 year old kids. It's also important to check the packages for the safety cautions or choking hazards. In that way we can find safe toys available in the market for the children. =)

Yeah. I still don't know what toy she likes. Her mom told my anything but I like something special. But it will definitely be non-hazardous.

What about asking the parents if you can start a bank account off for the child and putting a small amount of money in there for her, that way each year you can add to the account and when she is older she will have a bit of a start in her life. This way she will have something to show for the money tha you have put away for her.

A crib would be somewhat expensive. I would say a nice toy. The parents get their kids things they need for their bdays. It's the godparent and aunts and uncles jobs to get the fun stuff. Get a learning toy. Educational and fun. Nothing to noisy for the parents.

Yeah. Godparents should give toys. But I don't know what toy a 12 months old really like. If it's a ball, it's not cute. I don't know what other toys to give. It's my first time being a godparent. :)

If you would like to give something that will hold some kind of a meaning for her in the future, then something like a rosary if you are Catholic people would be a neat gift. If you want to give her something that she will enjoy, I highly suggest a Busy Ball Popper (both of my children got one of these when they were a year old and they loved it). Or, if you think that she would need them, new clothes are very nice as well. She really won't remember her first birthday so you are really only giving the gift because you feel obligated to do it.

Well my niece loves to be read too so when my niece turned one I got her a few water books that way she can look at while she's taking a bath that way they don't get Ruined in the water like she did with the regular books lol...I guess it really depends what type of stuff she's into and I wouldn't really worry to much about it cause babies ALWAYS seem to be more into the bag or box the gift came in then the actual gift the gift is usually more for the parents interest to use with the child then anything else...this year everyone was like wow I should have just got your niece wrapping paper...lol hope I helped some Happy My Lotting! :)

Wow. A water book. I've never heard of that. Maybe because kids stuff isn't really my thing. But I like it. My friend can read her stories while little godchild is in the tub. I'll think about it. Thanks!
