Copy/Paste Someone Elses Discussions- Why Do People Do This ?

Recently i was informed by another member that one of my discussions was copied and pasted (i mean to the "letter") and she was nice enough to inform Mylot about this and of course the person who did this had their discussion deleted. Although i was very grateful to the person who was diligent enough to have found this, i was also a little angry and really couldn't understand why anyone would do this.Do we really have members here who are so lazy or so unitellignet they feel the need to copy someone elses discussion word for word? I guess they feel since there are so many discussions here , no one will notice and to tell you the truth, if this member hadn't found the one who copied mine, i probably would have never found it myself. Interested to know your opinion on those who do this and what motivates them. Also, has this ever happened to you?

Hi jujunme, I don't know where people get their nerves, because it does take a lot of nerves to think that you can copy and paste someone else's work and pass it on as your own. I think people try things such as this and hope that everyone else is blind to their dishonesty. Luckily, people are not blind and they do read these posts and if something looks familiar or similar they will become alarmed and "blow the whistle." People who is not talented enough to do their own work or who just don't have in integrity should think twice about stealing other people's work.

Hi jujunme, You are probably right, they thought they would not get caught. It truly is not work the money to lose your integrity. Hopefully if they are reading these posts the will not try it again.

It does take a lot of "nerve" to do this but, i would bet the person never thought they'd be caught, since there are many topics and discussions here, the person felt no one would notice it. it amazes me what some people will do just to earn a few cents.

This is unacceptable and the lowest of lows when it comes to plagiarism. It annoys me that my co-lead at work often resends to his team email messages I send to my team with only the signature and a few words (sometimes not even) edited. He always get a copy of the emails because all c ommunications we send should go to our DL's which both of us are members of. So everything I send, he receives and vice versa. And he doesn't deny it, not that he could and just tells me something of the sort of adage that imitation is the highest form of flattery. Since it doesn't really hurt and in fact the communications we sent to each of our teams are usually applicable to both, I just let him be. This one though, is different. Obviously, whoever is copy-and-pasting discussions in mylot just wants to raise earnings. It's a shame coz it's probably a member who's allowed to copy and paste (I believe they require you to have 500 points for that).

Yes, you do need 500+ points to copy/paste here but, imagine if this person "didn't" have this many points? That would mean that he or she would have to go to the trouble of typing my "entire" discussion word for word. How desperate can you get? and all just to earn a little money.

Are there people like this here who don't have any thoughts and ideas to start their own discussions except copy someone else's discussion? I read some similar discussion before and never thought of checking out whether they were original. But personally, I hope every discussion is here is original and worth reading and responding. The only possibility of copying, I think, is that the person only wants to make money here. Exchange of ideas or broaden one's mind is secondary to making money. Fortunately, someone discovered and reported to the admin. It's better to work out some rules to punish people who do this. For example, their ID should be suspended once they were found cheating.

"Are there people like this here who don't have any thoughts and ideas to start their own discussions"?/ i think that most members here are intelligent and do come up with many good and interesting discussions, but unfortunately, there are others who seem to think it's ok to "steal" someone elses work hoping they won't be caught.as i mentioned before, i don't know if the discussion was just deleted or if Mylot suspended their account but , i do agree, just deleting it doesn't seem to be enough of a punishment for doing this. if a person is only doing this to earn a few cents, they shouldn't be here at all, since sharing ideas is what Mylot is supposed to be all about.

This has never happened to me. Now that I think about it you can't paste anything unless your rank is 500+ right? So unless this person was at that ring or above it, they must have retyped your entire discussion by hand! LOL - What a lazy idiot! I not trying to be mean but think about it if your going to take the all that time and effort completely retyping someone else's discussion why not just use all that energy to create your own? This is one of dumbest thing I ever heard of, I'm sorry this has happened to you jujunme, even though this hasn't happened to me here I have been plagiarized before and it does not feel good!

Too bad Mylot doesn't have an edit feature on comments, cause I did not proofread this before posting it ~ LOL

LOL I still can't wrap my head around it though, it's just a discussion that person could have used the topic of your discussion and just posted about it from a different angle something.

Don't worry about your response, i understood it just fine./"you can't paste anything unless your rank is 500+ right?" /Wow! i never thought of that. Since i have no way of knowing who this person was(i was not the one who reported it) i would have no way of knowing if his or her rank was below 500.but,even if this person "did" type the entire discussion and although you're right, it would take a lot of time and effort to do this,in "their" mind it was probably easier than having to use their "brain" coming up with a discussion of their own right? So either way it was "dumb",since their efforts turned out to be for nothing.I am also sorry this happened to you, because, as you mentioned , it doesn't feel good at all.

I never put myself in the plagiarism way.For me,copying others work is not the thing for me.Some people dare to this due to their inability to give something that is fresh from their minds. You said yourself that these people are not intelligent. That's why. They have other people's ideas, and the easiest thing to do is to copy.Copying is not what we should do,but I do agree if some people made improvisations towards other people's idea. That's how an idea expands and spread to other people. It is a good thing in Mylot that we can share our thoughts and ideas about something, and let other people respond to it.Copying would just affects the ideas blurted by the original creator,by putting it in a box and not letting it to expand.Or maybe these people just copy to increase their earnings, perhaps.

Besides being a very wrong thing to do, i see no point in copying someone elses discussion. In the first place, what is the person really gaining by doing this? a few cents? a few responses? unless, this wasn't the "first" time this person copied an entire discussion, (in that case they would be earning a bit of responses and money if they did this several times.) also, if someone can't come up with a discussion of their own, they shouldn't even be here as Mylot is all about sharing opinions and ideas and the person that did this to me, obviously doesn't have any of their own.

I think you nailed the reason in your commentary. I know for me personally, I often copy conversations, or quotes to other forums and conversations on other boards. Although not really the same issue, I do think there are some great conversations that go on here and often times well documented thoughts and reasons. Since there is no Facebook or Twitter icons to spread these topics virally, I think that sharing some of these topics with other sites is a great idea. However, what you are talking about is different, and quite honestly inexcusable. My guess is it had lots of response, and someone looking for their 15 minutes of fame, or personal ego boost. Some peoples children....just gotta watch them all the time.

i see nothing wrong with quoting someone or even pointing someone in the direction of a good topic or converstion. But, as i mentioned this person copied my entire discussion word for word and i agree that it is "unexcusable." and somtimes even when we're watching the kiddies, they manage to get into a whole bunch of trouble, lol

i never done this and i never have my discussion being copied as well... plagiarism is the same as stealing and it is not the right thing to do regardless of the reason... anyway, you can also think about it in a positive manner... may be your discussion is so good that other people feel that they have to copy it... :-) take care and have a nice day...

i wish i could think of it positively, obviously whoever did this did like my discussion enough to copy it.but,i just think it's very unfair ,not only to me(i don't know how long the discussion stayed posted before it was found) but,how about those who may have responded to this persons copy of my discussion, their responses were deleted as well, which means they lost whatever earnings they may have gotten because of this.it's just a bad thing all around.Thank you,and have a nice day as well.

I think that these people are uncreative, lazy and not self motivated. They are going to be failures at making any extra money online because they can't do anything on their own. To copy others topics is obviously agains the rules and I would think these people have to be pretty dumb to actually think they aren't going to be reported and maybe asked to leave the site. Just silly! Never happened to me(that I am aware of) and it would be quick to be reported.

Couldn't have described it better myself. but, as i mentioned before , they probably thought since there are so many discussions on so many different topics,no one would notice it was a duplicate of mine. What a lazy and sneaky way to earn a few cents only,to find out in the long run it was all for nothing.

As i've posted here many times, we are entitled to do something stupid at least once a day. That's a good example what happened to you. He thought maybe he could get off the hook or something.

I agree. Whoever did this probably "did" think he or she could get away with it,especially when there are so many discussion topics here. What they obviously didn't know (neither did i) was, the member who found my copied discussion informed me that she keeps a very close eye on things like this and that is why she found the 2 discussions and knew i was the first to post it. i'm very grsteful she did find it and very glad she reported it, since i would have "never" found it myself.

Yeah, it happened to me in school- there was this girl who copied my diary, verbatim..I was so shocked dad the teacher asked who cheated.. I just don't get people who are so lazy and don't have their own opinion. They're going to get caught anyway so they shouldn't cheat at all.

I just started to answer the discussions I bookmarked and the ones in my inbox... I was quite shocked that she copied it too, she said that she was just going to read it and write her own based from what i did.. Maybe she didn't expect the teacher to really read the diaries.

Wow! wasn't expecting any more responses to this discussion, but i do thank you for bringing it back to life, lol i thought having my discussion copied was bad, but someone copying an entire diary is beyond comprehension, whoever did this had to know they would be caught, since a classroom has far less people than Mylot does, so more of a chance of being caught. Either way, cheating is cheating and if someone can't come up with their own ideas and decide to copy someone else's work, they shouldn't be surprised when they are called out for their dishonesty.

Not everyone will do it. We don't want to be a copycat. If someone did it, he or she must be desperate to earn for the credit. ha! ha! ha! Luckily we still have some diligent and responsible members here to find out all of these nonsenses. If any of the members are caught of copying the discussion exactly, they should be punished heavily. Deleting their post is insufficient.

Since i wasn't the one who found and reported it, i have no way of knowing if this person merely had their discussion deleted or, if Mylot suspended thier account. but, i do agree that just deleting the post is "insufficient" since we have no way of knowing if this was the first time they copied someone elses discussion and just got away with it at other times. in my case, i was lucky someone just happened to be looking for things like this and the discussion ws deleted .i'm just wondering if others may not have been as lucky.

Sometimes i copy/paste for faster. Because i think it's so much information like that on internet, and it's be same to mine. But with mylot, all i've typed by myself.

Copy/paste is fine if you're just taking some information or link from another discussion or website.and you still need a 500+ rank to do this on Mylot. But, this person copied my "entire" discussion pretending he or she was responsible for starting the discussion. This is "so" wrong and really not very intelligent.I'm just glad the person was caught.

It is never happen to me but i must agree you it isnt fair because every one must give his own opinion and dont just easy copy past things from ather members but i though ther was a limit of copy words here... Mayby am i wrong but i think the best you can do is just report them, i think they will stop doing it then! And i hope for you that it never happens again!

Thank you,I do hope it never happens to me again or "anyone" else , but i wouldn't be surprised if it happens more often and is just not noticed. and no, it isn't fair at all. people take a lot of time and thought in trying to come up with interesting discussions hoping to share their thoughts and ideas with others. For someone to just come along and copy an ewntire discussion just to earn some money, is really as bad as it gets.

That's what makes us human. There are those who abide by the rules and those that cheat the system. We see this everywhere, not just with a copy and paste on myLot. I wonder if your plagiarist is the same one I reported last week for posting a lengthy cut and paste from another site? If you believe in karma, you'll be able to rest knowing that what goes around comes around...
@jujunme (2501)

"That's what makes us human" yes, very true but sad as well.As far as the plagiarist you reported, i have no way of knowing if it's the same one who copied my discussion.I only know the discussion was reported to Mylot and subsequently deleted.I don't even know how long it stayed posted before it was found or if the person had his or her account suspended. and yes, i certainly do believe in "karma"and also hope it was worth it to the person who thought they got away with this.

Plagiarism is never okay. Not when you're copying a book, a story or an argument. Not even on mylot. I'm really sorry to hear that it happened to you. It's good that mylot is so strick and that they acted and deleted that discussion, not all sites do that! I suspect that person just wanted to earn some money with minimum effort, well now (hopefully) they have learned their lesson.

Yes, i'm also glad Mylot has strict guidelines against these sort of things. but, if it weren't for a member who noticed this, i probably would have never known about it. and i totally agree with the reason you gave for why this person did this, unfortunately for them all they managedto get, was to have their discussion deleted.

There are alot of people that i have noticed that have started to copy and paste other peoples discussions and yes it is not nice for a person to do this to anyone, but it has always happened on here and i think that it always will. The reason they dpo this is because they are too lazy to start their own discussions as well as they think that it is an easy way get make money.

I simply do not understand it. I guess that they are lazy. Once in a while, we may copy part/ a sentence or two from another discussion because it is well said and explains the situation really well. I guess that they are lazy and that they want to earn a quick buck.

i agree, there is nothing wrong with quoting someone or taking parts of a discussion to help people get a better understanding of a certain topic, but when the entire discussion is posted and made to look as if the person who copied it, started it themselves that's about as sneaky and may i add lazy as it gets.

No, it really doesn't matter what "ranking" you have.Copying someone elses discussion word for word and posting it to make it look like your own is against Mylot's rules and guidelines for posting discussions.
