Not Getting Sleep When You Need it Most

I need to get up early today because my family and I are making the three hour drive to be at my grandmother's for Thanksgiving. So I need to be asleep, but I can't seem to get to sleep. I could take a sleeping pill, but I don't like how they make me feel groggy. Plus, I don't want to take medicine I don't have to. My discussion really isn't about how to get to sleep. I'm more interested if you are like me, in that when you need the sleep the most, you seem to actually get less than usual.

Always seems to work that way, doesn't it? The last few nights I have been able to go to sleep really early. Like you I have quite a few things to cook tomorrow and I'm not tired enough to go to sleep.

I am in a choir that performs twice a month, on the same day. I usually attend the later service at 11:15 but when we are performing I need to be there at 8:40 to also perform in the earlier service. I am always paranoid on the day before, keeping me awake. There have been nights where I stay on for the entire night, and not sleep until the next night if not sometime after the sun rises.

Hi Holly Yes I am like you there, I think it is because your mind is telling you that you have to get up for a certain time and you do not want to sleep in so you do not sleep well that way you will not ignore or not hear the Alarm going of When I was working I used to be terrible I really do not know now how I managed to get through the Day working all Day and seeing to the Children with so little sleep lol

maybe you were a little anxious about your trip? i usually have a bad night's sleep. what you could take is melatonin. it is produced by the body naturally and you can get it at health food stores.

Yeah, I have nights like that occasionally. It depends on what my life is like at that moment. I notice when I'm working out harder I tend to sleep better.. but I had a couple months where I wasn't working out everyday, so I wasn't sleeping as well at night. Also when I'm excited about the next day's plans I also have trouble getting to sleep.

Physical exertion during the day always helps me sleep at night. Working out, cleaning the entire house...

Oh yeah. I have a 4-5 hour travel most of the time going to work and heading back home and that's everyday! I have other activities every other day after office hours so I go home almost midnight already. I sleep on an average of 5 hours a day. It's only during weekends I get to sleep atleast 8 hours or more. Then after rest days, for some unknown reason, the night before the first day of work usually I don't easily fall asleep and it's frustrating because it makes me want to absent myself. ='(

hi ambiepam I am the same way specially if I am going to a strange doctor I have never met. I will worry and turn and toss and when I need sleep the most so as to be alert and responsible I am tired and usually forget some of the things I wanted to tell him or her. Same way if I am going shopping, I am excited to get out of Gold crest for awhile and thus I again do not get the sleep I really need when I need it.,I sometimes wish we had an off an on switch on our minds at night so thinking and worrying would not rob me of the sleep when I need it most.

Hi Amber! I know what you mean! I get overtired when I know I have to go somewhere and need to be up early. It usually comes from too much adrenalin from the excitement. I do hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with your family! I had to make myself get up early just so I could get the turkey cleaned and prepped and in the oven at a decent hour! It's now ready to come out of the oven! It's just me and the "boys" so no big deal, except for the mess!

Isn’t that always the way? I get by on very little sleep usually and I do okay except that one time I have something important to do and suddenly I will feel run down and exhausted! I particularly hate not being able to get to sleep when I know I desperately need the rest! I admit that this hasn’t happened to me in a while though because lately I’ve been so tired that my head hits the pillow while I’m already asleep! Try a warm drink or some brandy…Can’t hurt...(LOL)

I wish you a happy thanksgiving with your family. Yes, these days I am not getting enough sleep lately as I end to worry about things a lot. I pray so much but I cannot get away from not worrying. I have to consciously choose not to worry and this is difficult. I do not take sleeping pills but will take two antihistamine tablets as these make me drowsy but are not habit forming.

The worst thing is having so much to do that you cant go to bed until very late, then knowing you have to get up early the next day and laying awake fretting that you only have a few hours to sleep. I do that very often!

It seems when I have a lot on my mind I find I loose out on my zzz's. Maybe the excitement was truly getting so hyped up that it caused you to be unable to sleep. By now I am sure you are having a great time so get to bed a bit earlier today so you can be fully charged the next. Happy holidays to you and your family, wishing you lot's of love and joy.

Sometimes.....if I have a hard time falling asleep then it seems like that just makes it work. There are nights when I have something on my mind and I have to get up at 4 for work in the morning that I worry about it so much I can't sleep! I count and all kinds of things trying to drop off. Hope you did get a little sleep though!

Oh yeah, the excitement that flows through one when something special is coming up and it feels like sleep never comes. I hope you got your sleep, my puppies woke me up early as usual, and I was up late last night, so I'll probably take a nap later on..

I know what you mean. I don't sleep very well at all, myself. You said you didn't like taking a sleeping pill. Have you ever tried drinking chamomile tea? I have drunk that before bedtime and sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't, I hate to say. I take tylenol p.m. every night before going to bed and it seems to help me. I also think drinking hot cocoa or hot chocolate helps.

Hi, Probably you are getting excited over the trip to visit your grandmother, that is why you can't get sleep yet. For me, I always get excited when I have the holiday trip in the next day. I just wanted to go for my holiday and hope time can pass faster. It is not to take a sleeping pill and I advised you " never touch this kind of pill", if you really can't get to sleep, listen to some soft music or read magazine. It helps to kill your time and slowly, you will get tired and will go to bed.
