training your puppy to walk on a lead

Hi mylotters! Me and my fiancee just got a 5-month-old puppy and she's really adorable. We have managed to potty train her and she's been really friendly and nice to other people. Our only concern with her is we have no idea on how to teach her how to walk on a lead. My fiancee tried to put the lead on her and tried to walk with her out in the garden but all it ended up was him pulling the poor puppy or they would just stop because she wouldn't move at all. He tried it thrice but it is still the same, she's getting pulled or she stops walking when my fiancee isn't trying to pull her to him. Would love to hear from you guys for any advice or tips as to how to train our puppy to walk on the lead. I know it's still early to say if we've tried just a couple of times, she'll learn straight on but is there or are there any tips that you have done or tried to train your puppies to walk on the lead which were successful? Thank you for your responses!

Hi camposkat, First you have to get your puppy used to the leash. Attach a short leash to her collar, and let her drag the leash around while playing or eating, without holding the other end of the leash. She might be shy at the beginning, but she will soon get used to the leash attached to her collar. The next step is to hold the leash while encouraging her to follow you in a familiar place. Encouraging means a lot of praise and treats if they are needed. Only when she doesn't show any shyness when you walk her on-leash in the familiar place you can go to the next step - go outside. Usually, puppies are so curious to discover the world, that they often forget about the leash and start pulling the owner. But this is another story. Let's make her comfortable with the leash, and then you'll see what you have to do.

Inu, you beat me to this and you are right. This is what I did with Penny and Ciara, just put the leash on them and allowed them to drag it around for a while. Now, I can't touch the leach without them both getting overly excited for a walk..lol

Thanks for the tip inu! I'll tell my fiancee about this because he also is finding it hard to make the puppy follow him when he tried walking her on the lead. :) Thanks guys :)

1 st place the choke chain/ collar on with the lead. Walk with the puppy in a protected area/ fenced. Let the puppy follow with the lead dragging on the grond always checking to be sore the lead doesn't hang up on anything. When the puppy is following easy enough, add weight on lead or place in hand loose. When the puppy is following start training gentle a t first then real training..
