What Kind of Crazy Frugal Things Do You Do?

I just got finished soaking my old prescription bottles in hot water and scraping off the labels so that I can use them to hold quarters to get my laundry done with. I think it's kind of a crazy thing to do because you can buy quarter holders, but this is more frugal. I used to use old laundry detergent just to hold all my spare change in and when it was full I'd cash it in, it's kind of like a second payday! Lol, but I liked doing that because no one ever suspected my spare change in a laundry detergent bottle. What kinds of crazy frugal things do you do?

I guess you could say the craziest frugal thing I did is when one of my step grand kids was in the hospital they used the hospital bottles to feed them so they could keep up with what they drank i kept them and used them again I also have used old medicine bottles for storage I use old milk jugs for water and I also reuse the plastic bags from stores for trash.

That is a very good idea! Well all of them are... but I'm going to try the old milk jugs plan. I never seem to have enough cold water on hand for me. Lol I do reuse plastic grocery bags too.

No thats not crazy its reusing something rather then paying money for something when you can make one of your own using things that wont cost you anything. If you had to hide your money so no one would steal it then using an old laundry detergent container was a good idea. I never would have thought to look there for someones money lol.

Say that's a good hiding spot for change, especially if you are the only one who does wash. I dunno what crazy thing I do... that may take some pondering.

Yes, I also have a habit of stocking up on things when they are on sale and when my sister was living with me I had five different things of laundry detergent in my house and luckily she never picked up that one or else she would have tried to run off with the change.

I do stock up on things when they are a deal however much of the time I don't have the money to do so. I really would like to invest in a small freezer for such occasions as well. But too many other things to pay for.

I have different places to put coins of different amounts. The biggest coin in my country equals to about US$1. I can put one of the a day in my piggybank for vacations. More than one is cheating, unless I have done a job that I would normally have to pay for (like painting a wall or something like that). The next on line coins are worth about 20 cents. Those go all to a ceramic swan that someone brought me with a flower arrangement decades ago. The swan is is in the kitchen. When I don´t have eggs, I pick up my swan and go to a mini market nearby where they sell eggs. I´m sure I must be the swan lady as the cashier knows that she has to help me count the coins to pay. I don´t remember the last time I paid for eggs with other money. And I´m a heavy consumer of eggs as I make a lot of awesome meals with that cheap protein. The smallest coins I´m saving in a jar. When I have it full I´ll take them to the Bank. Noone else will change me lots of penny like coins. Who knows how much I´ll get? Anyway it will be more than most people do: they throw them away.

That is a good savings plan! I will keep that in mind as I try to save some money for things that I need.

I forgot to tell you then about another of my crazy things. When hard body soap is very small, I don´t throw it away. I have a small pouch made with an old rag. I have it soft with water and use it to help me out in those prewashings where machines don´t work. I scrub that soap into sleeve borders, socks and other clothes and leave it there for a while. Another scrub half an hour later and I start my washing.

Oh I use the prescription bottles too but I punch small holes in the top and and place my quilting thread inside. I push the end up through the ole on the cap and I always have the end of the thread ready. It also keeps the spools from rolling away or unraveling. I also use them filled with iron filings for my needles. I saw in a museum how they used to use them to sharpen their needles, they would use them in small pillows. I uses the pill bottles filled with them and my needles.

That is a good idea as well. I have my prescription bottle next to my computer filled with quarters. I have my drying rack in the kitchen. So, I can hand wash things at home that aren't very rough to hand wash, like t-shirts, panties, shorts, and sweats. But things like jeans and sheets and blankets I can take to the laundry mat without worrying too much about having the money to do so. yay!

Guess I'm pretty much like you,the only thing I have a very large bottle where I store all the five centavo and ten centavo coins, you see in my country we seldom use this coins because the value is really very small that you cannot do much with it( some people just throw them away so I pick them up) although it is still legal tender, to date I have not yet filled the container although there is a lot already, I plan to deposit all in my bank when the time comes,I just hope it does not become demonitized by that time lol

Lol it sounds a lot like pennies in my country. I pick them up all the time off parking lots when I'm out. My boyfriend sometimes chastises me because of a saying in our country "See a penny pick it up and all day long you'll have good luck." Apparently this only works if the penny is on heads. But, my luck is so bad I don't care and just pick up the penny anyway.

i had done many crazy frugal things to save money in this recession time... especially now i am jobless and in the process of looking for another new job... i have to be more careful in spending my money... i reuse everything that i can, i don't throw away any food, i use water and electricity very wisely, i use discount coupons whenever i can, etc... all i need to do to survive... take care and have a nice day...

A lot of people don't really realize how long this recession has been going on because it was a few years into it before it hit the middle class. I'm still young and yet even I remember a time when you could literally get a tank of gas with your spare change. Now it takes months of my spare change to get some gas. And I get tricky with my coupons too. If it doesn't specify a size and price I will get the smaller cheaper one and walk away with free to CHEAP stuff. Right now I have a Jergens coupon for 1.00 off... but doesn't specify size or price. Walgreens has a travel size bottle of Jergens for 99 cents. I'm getting it.

We use the M&M Minis tubes to carry quarters. The large ones carry $20. I also make my own laundry detergent, and I have a hand machine at home to do laundry in. We have since bought a machine but before we had one I did all my laundry at home and saved those extra quarters for me. We made it out of a 5 gallon bucket and keep it around for emergencies. Its a decient workout too. I hated spending the time at the laundry center.

Wow, I would love to see a picture of that hand machine! I like seeing the cool things people make using what they have on hand.

Yes and pill bottles would be good for safety pins, thumb tacks, paper clips... stuff like that too. Maybe I should just get a spice rack and store my old pill bottles of stuff on it! Lol

I've done the same thing with my old prescription bottles. I collect quarters until I have enough to roll and take to the bank, though. I also use old prescription bottles to store flower and vegetable seeds that I collect from the ones I grow each year. They're airtight and store easily in the freezer to keep the seeds fresh. I also roll up old newspapers into "logs" by pushing them through empty toilet paper rolls and give them to my son because he has a fireplace in his house and they're a great way to stretch the budget. We have plenty of trees on our property here and every year there are at least a couple of trees or large branches that come down so we cut them up for his fireplace but the newspaper logs help, especially in starting the fires. They're better than kindling, at least in my opinion. I just wish I had a fireplace here. At least my son is benefitting from my not having one. LOL

Those are some REALLY good ideas! I used to have a place with a fireplace in it, but I never used it because I didn't have the money to buy firewood. And I wasn't sure if it had been cleaned before I moved in. I will keep the seeds idea in mind too because I'm totally intending on planting when I get my own place. Even if it's a window sill garden I think it will be helpful.

Thsi may sound crazy, but one thing I do is when I go to order something online, I'll close otu the browser as if I don't intend to buy. Why? Because a lot of sites will offer to lower the price or give you something extra to entice you to change your mind. Just today I got my shipping and handling on an item changed from 4.95 to 1.99 and finally to 1.00. It does not work all the time but it does work a lot!

I have noticed that happens too. Also, I like to get a free subscription to magazines and then when the free year is up they will bend over backwards to get you to resubscribe! I've gotten two years for 4 dollars with an added freebie on top of that! Haha.

Well there's nothing wrong with re-using! If it comes in handy, why not? I can't say I do anything really all that frugal, except when I go to hotels - I take the coffee, body wash/soap, etc! I take everything that I can. It's more like a souvineer type of thing, though, because rarely do I actually use these things - I just keep them around the house, or take them on trips with me when I need compact-sized cosmetics/stuff. LOL. My sister is a freak about ordering free samples- she orders SO many it's ridiculous! And she also does things like asking for NO ICE when we go to a fast food place - so she gets more soda for her money. lol.

I'm a huge fan of freebies too. I have to be careful not to let too many people know I do so though because I had a friend that wanted some and she didn't want to do the work so she had me going around and signing her up for freebies too. It was a complete waste of time for me. I also take the soaps from hotels... I thought you were supposed to! Lol

There are actually only two that I can think of that I do that are crazy yet frugal things that I do. Well, I guess three. First of all, I've always been a person that is quite anal about saving my change. I have a little canister that came from my dad's office when he passed away and I will save that until there is $100 in it before I will cash it in. And, yes, I do always know how much money is in that container at all times because I also keep a notecard in there that tells me how much money there is. Secondly, despite the fact that we have recycling service at our home because we have city trash pickup, I will save the aluminum cans and take them to the recycling center so that I can get change from my empty cans. Finally, we get summer passes to the city pools. You are able to get up to six passes per family, so I will find a friend that wants to split with me and I will only pay half price for the membership.

Those are some really great ideas! I'm going to try to get a few extra six flags passes this coming year if they have good deals because I'll get more for my money... and people to actually go with me! Lol
