I almost quit my job tonight

Australia
November 27, 2010 5:54am CST
I work 2-4 nights a week as a waitress in a small Italian restaurant...The owners are a married couple who are now separated...I still see the wife outside of work (she no longer works there but that is a looooooong story)...anyway, I get the don't tell her what's going here & I get from her don't tell him what I'm doing...I am getting sick of the immature work politics...on top of that, I got accused of stealing from the cash register...I don't care what you call me but NEVER call me a theif!!! I was stewing over this when I was working on my own re-setting the restaurant just before getting REALLY mad about it that I actually left in a foul mood. I almost told my boss to find another waitress as I wasn't coming back...I did tell him it wasn't me & I would never do that but it's only my word which I am sure he doesn't believe....how would you handle the situation? I am SERIOUSLY thinking about not going back even though I love what I do, I am just beginning to hate being there.

Hello my friend. Sorry to hear that you are having such a difficult time at work. That sounds like it would be a pretty uncomfortable place to work when you have to deal with the separated couple and now this accusation. I think if someone accused me of stealing, I would tell them to shove it, but that it just me. If I have been put in difficult situations which I thought were not fair to me, then I have walked out in the past. This only happened to me twice and both jobs were one after the other and the first jobs I got when I first came to the Gold coast. It did not give me a very good impression of the local industry I can tell you! I hope it all works out for you.

At least you were able to find a couple of decent bosses before you became your own boss.

I can understand why you had a bad impression of your industry on the Goldy when you first came up here! I did almost tell him to shove it right then & there!! Then at the end of the night, I almost did the same because I had been mulling it over!

Yeah, I only lasted one month at each of those. I was used to being treated very well by my bosses in Melbourne. I did find a couple of good places after that though which I worked at for two and a half years and then three years.

There must be several people using the till so how come the boss reckons it's you? That's just wrong for him to accuse you and I'm sorry, but if you leave, it will look like his accusations are correct. Is he paying you award wages?

He's paying you cash? That's wrong. That means he is probably not paying your tax and I'll bet you're not getting your superannuation which you are entitled to. He's robbing you!! I would be reminding him of this if he blames you again. Meantime, look for a job that will pay you what you should be paid and that includes your super!

There is more than 1 person in the till just about every night of the week...I have stopped using the till now & that should narrow down who the culprit is but it could just be general mistakes too... I'm not getting the award wage but only because I'm not on the books as such.

Maybe his way of weeding out the thief is to confront each of his staff individually and accuse each of stealing. It might not be that he's accusing you specifically, but that he's accusing everyone he sees as suspects. The worst thing for you to do now is quit. Once you quit, the real thief will keep his/her mitts out of the cash register for a while, giving your boss more reason to believe that you're the thief. Instead, you should convince your boss that he should fit a camera over the cash register in order to catch the real thief. Of course, this all depends on what's legally allowed in your country. Alternatively, to cover your own backside, wear a small discrete camera (eg. a pen-cam) during your work hours to ensure that your movements and interactions are recorded whilst you're at work. Be sure to capture your approach to, interaction with and walking away from the cash register. Start recording as you approach the restaurant to start your shift, capture the restaurant's calendar etc., and only turn off the cam after you've left. If any more money goes missing and you're accused, you can then show him your footage for the night the theft took place. It's easy to be accused, harder to prove your innocence.

I do see your point - I just don't appreciate being called something I'm not...he says he is going to install cameras as he had a problem with an employee at a fish & chip place he owned.

I am sorry to hear about that Moon. I wouldn't like to be called a thief either. Maybe the boss is just upset because of his marital problems, however, that is no reason to take it out on his employees. I am glad that you have something to fall back on in the event that you need to quit. Hopefully things will be better when you go back to work.

I am hoping that I will get enough hours with this new job to quit & my friend (the wife/my ex-boss of my boss who accused me) even said that too.

Hi, Feel sorry to read about this bad incident happened to you. It is heart pain when being accused as a thief. Since you are not doing it,then tell your boss straightly for not being anyhow accused you. If he does not trust you at all, there is no point for you to work there, furthermore, you won't be happy to work there too. Now, the decision is at your hand. whether you want to quit this job or carry on with this job while looking for another better job.

Thi is what I have been thinking, I enjoy the customers there but I am starting to not enjoy being there on a whole...I do have another job lined up so if this works out, I think I will be quitting.

if you are going to quit, he might think more that you really are the thief. so better back to work and prove him you didnt get the money. anyways the truth will be revealed sooner.

I can see your point but I still don't think I should have to put up with being accused of being something I am not!

your boss is being ridiculous... he can't just accuse you of being a thief without any proof and you can actually sue him for defamation of character if his accusation turned out to be false... i will pursue this matter further if i were in your case and i won't let him off so easily... i also won't quit from my job because by quitting you are just confirming that his accusation is true and you feel guilty... even if you want to quit, please quit after you clear up your name and take action against your boss... good luck... take care and have a nice day...

I can definitely guarantee that his accusation is false - I would never seal from anyone no matter how desperate I was for money...I would go down the suing route but I am also worried that this may hinder me from getting other jobs in the future.

Wow, sounds very dramatical. I inform such people, that if they don't want me to talk about it, they shouldn't tell me about it. Also, were I accused of stealing, I would just walk right out, that is one of the worst things someone could accuse me of. Depending on who accused me, if it was the boss, I would say, you should install low light, High res Cameras if you are worried about, oh and its been great working with you, have a nice life. That is just me mind you. I would set up a meeting with my Boss, and discuss how I felt about the situation, and inform him if it doesn't improve, I wouldn't be able to continue working for him. Sincerely and With Appreciation.

To tell you the honest truth, I almost walked out right then & there because of his accusation)this was before any diners had come in & I was still setting up the tables! I am getting over the so-called "politics" of the place too.

It seems that you are in the middle of a personal problem. It´s no longer only a job. I could not work in a place where they call me a thief. Besides, to say that, you must ask them to show PROOF. I´m sure that you will have a better job as a waitress at another restaurant. Take care!

I do feel like piggy in the middle sometimes...I guess it's always a good thing not to become friends with one of your bosses....Thanks for having faith in me to be able to find another job...I am pretty sure I do have one lined up too.
28 Nov 10
it's a difficult situation, I'd say look for another job first if you really wanna quit... that way you won't have regrets... nywz, they're not worth keeping for... hope everything works out fine for you moonchild
