Well, it really depends on what kind of bad habit that you are trying to get rid of. My daughter, for example, has the bad habit of sucking her thumb. We are trying to break her of this habit by putting pepper or hot sauce on her thumb so that it doesn't taste good. So, basically, you need to analyze the bad habit that you are trying to get rid of and you need to work on behavior modification that will help you to get rid of the bad habit.

BY willing to change. If one is not willing to change, no matter how people advice, talk or even scold them, their bad habits will still be there. It takes encouragment and motivation for one to change their bad habits, and moral support is important too. Some people might change their bad habits for their loved ones, but it won't last long, because they are not doing it for themselves, and that's the difference.

Concenciously admit that you have bad habits. Read up on the subject. Keep track and be aware of when you do this 'bad habit'. Figure out ways to side step the habit.Set some person goals. It is said that it takes atleast two weeks to get rid of a bad habit so don't expect it to happen over night.

Bad habits are one of the leading causes for depression and regret. I would have to say that to accomplish any real success from a bad habit is to first admit the problem, then to develop a plan for success, then to stick to the plan.

It depends on what the habit is? Different tactics work for different habits. Someone that bites their nails might benefit from getting a really nice manicure so they would be less likely to bite their nails.

It is hard most of the times becuase it is part of life sometime because of it is inbuilt in a person. But you can go through some therapy and get it of it. Eg. counseling or spiritual renewal can also get rid of bad habits.

Hi DoctorDidi, we might develop a bad habit unconsciously without knowing it. When we come to know this, it has been sticking to us for quite some time. It's not easy to get rid of it for sure as we are so used to it. If we really want to shake away it we must take it seriously and try not to do the indecent habit as probably as we could. It needs time to cope with it. Definitely we can get rid of it if we always be alert not do it again before doing it. I believe time and patience as well as persistence will help us to get rid of it finally
Happy posting

hi doctordidi I try to get rid of my habit when nervous
or stressed of chewing on a lock of hair.,so replace it with
a good habit like getting a hair band and wearing it so I
can look pretty without that sucked on hair look; hope that
I can really stop the habit as it looks awful and is embarrassing no end. replacing old bad ones with new good habits will work usually.

General questions..may deserve general answers. Always keep that in mind. There are many methods and ways to get rid of different habits. Some harder than others. And different things work for different people. First things first you have to really want to stop for some good reason. Like health for example.

Hi Di,
The first thing that is a MUST - Realization that the habit is bad, many just wont realize or accept that it is a bad habit.
Once you have realized that it is a bad habit, then comes the desire to leave it or let go of it. Unless that happens, No One can force you to get rid of any habit.
After this comes your will power - on most cases of bad habits, they get so very deep rooted that the will power to drive these habits out breaks up at some point and then you are back to the old bad habit.
Other things that you may find helpful - support from family, friends and their standing by you during these hard times.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
theSids.

Well, the best thing to do, is first never try. Set a goal, when you need it one. And finally, just do it.

I wish you had mentioned a specific habit, anyway I think two factors are generally applied when getting rid of a bad habit in general, one is will power, no mater what technique is used to stop a bad habit it will just be useless if the person involved has no will power to stop.Second is abstinence , once a habit is stopped it can easily comeback if the person involved does not distance him self from the habit and people who engage in them.
