My company is going to send all the employee for medical checkup, and many people start to discuss about it. From the conversation, I found that almost all of the employee do not have any medical checkup for more than 2 years. This will be the first medical checkup for the company, and will be doing once every year. Do you think a medical checkup once a year is necessary? There are article saying that is best to avoid yearly medical checkup and doctors are actually have been taught to seek, find, and treat illness, but not to help you maintain good health. So, you will probably consume some prescribed medicines for the innocuous aberrations you doctor has found, you may very well experience so many side effects from the medicine that you really are sick. So, is it good to have a yearly medical checkup? Did your company send you for medical checkup every year?

I commend your company that they are initiating this check up at their cost. Honestly, we should all be going for a full medical check up every year - so as to know if we have acquired something that can be cured immediately.
Unfortunately, like me, I am very scared when it comes to that because I do not want to hear any bad news :(
Our company has not done it for us ever and I don't think they have any intention to do so.

That is something funny about you, you are supporting the annual medical checkup but you are scared to do the medical checkup just because you scare to hear some bad news from your medical checkup results. But do you ever think that if one day, you fall sick without knowing why just because you did not go for annual medical checkup and the doctor declared that you only have a few month life, so, now think about it, which on is more scary, to hear some bad new from your medical checkup findings or bad news from the doctor?

I believe it is so good of your company to already provide you with the yearly medical check-up. The annual medical would give you results that you sometimes don't expect you did have, since some diseases or ailments are asymptomatic. I am working in a medical laboratory which provides annual medical check-ups to companies and I think we've helped a lot of people already.

It is definitely good to have annual medical checkup to detect hidden diseases so that we can get treatment earlier. But many people are afraid that they the company will penalize them if they found having having infected with diseases through the medical checkup. But for me, it is good because prevention is always better than cure.

Hi,
it is good that your company is providing medical
check up for all the employee.
I remembered when I first joined one of the company in Singapore,
a bank, they provide me free medical check up.Very good service.
I have not been doing my medical check up for long and I took
that opportunity to make sure my body is fit enough.
I was glad with the result and of course, I got my job too.

Hi! That is quite common when a company is hiring someone, they will probably provide medical checkup to know a person heath status just in case he/she have infected with certain diseases that will infect other colleague. And further affect the company's work.

Yes, we do have that and they encourage us to attend to it to ensure that their employees are healthy. I will never look at it negatively nor will i think that that the doctors are just experimenting on me and may not be able to maintain a good health.
Take for example, cancer and heart ailments. I have an officemate who was recommended to undergo bypass surgery because he has 2 artery blockages. That officemate of mine is not even fat, she looks healthy and had never taken any heart medications, dang... he is not even aware that he has a heart problem... but lo... the annual check-up has actually gave him the benefit and warned him of his risk of succumbing to heart attacks.
As for cancer, i have a client who lives a physical lifestyle (badminton twice a week), she didnt know she has cancer stage I if it werent for the annual check-up.
In more cases, early detection can save a life.

Wow! It shows that how important are for the medical checkup is. If we never go for any medical checkup, we might having some fatal disease that only show us symptom when it is at the critical stage. You both colleagues are so lucky that they have detected their illness earlier, or else they might be harder for them to recover.
I will definitely join the medical checkup!

Hi Yspmyl,
I vote for the regular health checkups thing. Simple reason is that if you have been diagnosed with any illness, you come to know of it earlier than you would have (without the regular checkup thing). So many diseases are curable when they are detected early. So it is something positive.
As to why people generally dont go for a regular checkup - some are scared to know about their diseases and some believe that it is a waste of time. That always is not good for them. Some also feel that going for a health checkup is a waste of money as they are not going to be having diseases.
Now with your company taking the initiative, some people still will not prefer this because they will be thinking - What would happen if I have some illness? I may lose the job. It depends on the policies of your company and let us see what happens in case someone is diagnosed with some Illness?
I think they should keep the diagnosis results confidential and also be open towards discussions and treatment of the ill.
Cheers,
theSids.

Hi thesids,
I prefer to have the annual medical checkup so that at least we can detect some diseases that have to give treatment earlier if we can discover it earlier. For me, prevention is always better then cure.
You are right for that, some people are afraid to let the company know that they might having some diseases and they scare to lose their job. But since the company did not mention about the employee will be fire if they have infected with any kind of diseases, then I think it is okay to go for the medical checkup.
And since the cost of medical checkup will be fully bear by the company, so why not just join it.

Well, A medical check up is always good. Most companies provide this for free and it is part of the benefits you get. So, take this chance always to have this medical check ups. And it is to make sure all employees are of good health, since a sickly employee will always be a liability to the company. Yearly medical check ups are a must whether company sanctioned or personal decision. Why do you need it? As you grow older and under go more stress you will 100% need this to know any health illnesses or just to know how good your health is. You will be shocked how many people find out stuff about their health. The good thing is, it can be detected as early as possible.

I've heard of this happening but never experienced it. It seems while good natured in spirit a bit invasive to employee privacy. My health is my own business. If my company did require it I would probably see if I could opt out. It could be something that is a requirement of the company health benefits plan but I know that's not the case with all companies. Do you work with hazardous chemicals or with heavy equipment or machinery?

Yeah, your own health is actually your own business, but isn't it is good if the company provide you free medical checkup which cost few hundred dollars. My company is a manufacturer. So there will be some chemicals and machines around. Some people are deciding not to opt out for the medical checkup with their own reason. But I will still join since I want to know my own health status although I know that I am healthy as usual.

I actually think it's an excellent idea.A checkup can catch problems -like diabetes- before they become serious.
I suspect that many of the people who did not have checkups did so because of the cost.
As for doctors trying to find disease or health- I find there is a difference between doctors. Young doctors are more oriented towards maintaining health. My doctor works in a clinic similar to an American HMO. She has no incentive to prescribe unneeded medicine.
