What do you think of the Coronation Street 50th Anniversary week?

I've been a Coronation Street fan for years, and I'm loving this week's special programmes for the 50th anniversary. It's 50 years today (December 9th)since the programme first aired, and it still figures high in the ratings. There's a dramatic storyline, with the double disasters of the gas explosion at the Joinery and the tram crashing through the viaduct. How do you think it's been handled? I think they've dealt with it well. It's very realistic, and not a bit OTT, which it could so easily have been. I'm also enjoying the other programmes, particularly the '50 Best Moments,' that finishes tonight, and catching up with former cast members. So what are your thoughts? Who do you want to see live or die, and what's your favourite moment from 50 years of Coronation Street?

My mother used to watch it relgiously but I've got no interest in it or any other soaps for that matter. It's high time it was slated for a slum clearance operation! Dropping a tram on it seems to be a good start... BTW I can remember the first episodes, Enid Sharples, Minnie Caldwell et al. Bill Roach still going strong though - that man has some staying power and luck not to have been killed off years ago.

Hello, JwFarrimond. I think you mean Ena Sharples, but I know where you're coming from. As you say, Bill Roach has weathered all the storms - and wives and girlfriends, of course! Of course, the tram crash will make a big difference to the Street in the future.

Yes, Ena. If it was real life, he'd probably be in the Guinness book of records as the most married man in the UK

For a while now I’ve grown bored of Coronations Street, give me Emmerdale any day, but I am really enjoying this weeks big spectacular although I’ve not bothered with any of the specials. Who do I want to see live and die. Well Ashley has gone and I would imagine Molly won’t make it either. Charlotte’s been bumped off by John so that’s another one but I am struggling to work out who the fourth will be. I hope it’s not Rita as she is as much Corrie as Ken is. If there was one character who I wouldn’t mind seeing bumped off it would be John Stape but that is because I am tired of the storyline with him murdering people and covering it up. But I don’t think that happens. As for my favourite Corrie moment, I don’t really have a favourite. But I remember episodes such as when Fiz walks across the top of the factory in underwear she had designed or the night that Brian Tilsley was killed. I even remember when Ernie Bishop was killed which is surprising as I was only 5 at the time. Just shows how memorable Corrie can be.

I don't think it will be baby Hope either as calling a baby Hope and then giving it No Hope would be just cruel. I am pretty sure baby Jack is taken bad which will lead to Tyrone discovering that Kevin is the father but I don't think they will kill of baby Jack either. And like you I can't think of anyone who isn't accounted for so I am leaning towards either Sunita ending up dieing in hospital or John Stape killing someone else maybe either Charlotte's mother or father if they spot him in the maternity section of the hospital.

Yes, I'm intrigued by the fourth one. I'm trying to think who's been missing while all this has been going on, and I can't come up with anyone. I hope it's not going to be Fizz's baby - that will set me off howling. I think Coronation Street will keep the audiences for Christmas now - they've done us proud with this, despite a few silly bits.

Hiya Sandra! To be honest, the only time I watch "Corrie" is when I'm at Mum's as she's their number one fan. However, me and hubby watched Jack Duckworth pegging it the other week and the disaster this week and I must say, it's been top notch telly throughout. One bombshell after another, so to speak! Poor Rita hasn't even been discovered yet has she? Aww! They've also shown the very first episode, something that Mum watched first time round. She told me on the phone that she couldn't get over what she was watching as (obviously) nothing like that had ever been on the box before. The first thing she said was, "That Ken Barlow is a snob!" Haha! I wish they'd show more of the black and white episodes. Such a lot happens in half an hour, it's amazing. Oh, well, we shall see who "pegs it" tomorrow!

Hello again, Janey. I think you mean Charlotte, the bunny boiler - love 'got hammered!' As you say, he's a bit of a hopeless villain. Re 'Mastermind,' I actually got to the final. I won my first round with 'Coronation Street,' the second with the 'Poldark' novels, and I came 4th in the final with 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum.' I did put in for other topics, such as Shakespeare and Jane Austen, but they were turned down. My specialist subjects were actually 3rd, 5th and 10th choices, so I was delighted to reach the final. It was shown in 2007/2008.

Wow, you got to the Mastermind Final? That's brilliant Sandra. I've always known you were clever and you've proved it to me. I only wish I'd seen it at the time. Well done for getting to the Final. I've often said my "Sweet Pea" should do Star Trek or something but it goes in one ear and out the other!

Im not usually bothered about Corrie, I usually prefer Emmerdale, however I have been enjoying this weeks episodes, and Im really looking forward to tonights episode, now if only they could find a way to kill off John, thats one thing I dont like about it, they drag out storylines way too long!

Hello, again. There was the one where the paramedics said they were going to get Sally a hard hat to go in with Molly - and then didn't. Apart from that, I think it was pretty good. It takes some doing to do an hour's episode live, when you're used to recording it.

Yeah the live episode was good, however I feel the need to watch it again to see if I can pick up any mistakes, like if anyone messed up thier lines, but nothing jumped out at me when I was watching it, so maybe they all pulled it off!

I am really enjoying it and think that they are doing a sterling job with it. Tonight's live episode should be fantastic, I'm really looking forward to it. The thing I love about Coronation Street is that no matter what the situation they always seem to be able to get some humour in it, so much better than Eastenders. I do hope John's managed to finish that bunny boiler Charlotte off and that she is one of the fatalities; it seems pretty obvious to me hat Ashley is one of them too; I honestly thought that Clare would die and so Ashley would stay in the street rather than move to France. Molly looks like a goner too and I'm a little worried about Peter (gosh, you'd think it was real wouldn't you!!)I can't see Rita being a goner really - but who knows, we will tonight that's for sure. One of my most favourite moments is only a very small one but always brings a smile to my face; it was when Stan and Hilda went to a hotel for their anniversary and Stan drank from a glass that Hilda had drank from in her lipstick, he said "what's that taste?" and Hilda replied "Woman, Stanley, woman!" the timing was fantastic and it was so funny!!

@ Bev would have soon seen Fred off, I say, she'd have soon seen Fred off Great wasn't it, I didn't want it to end!! I agree with you about Mollie - her character changed too much, reckon it was to tie in with this ending - but to tell Sally !!! B1TCH!! We do take it very seriously don't we!! I just never understand when boring, badly acted Eastenders usually wins over the street, really annoys me!!

Hello again, Sue. I can't see the attraction in Eastenders either, and I'm sure it won't make 50 years. Coronation Street has the knack of interlacing high drama with a little comic relief. It's a rather Shakespearean touch, and it's why the programme never gets depressing, no matter how tragic the storyline. Eastenders should watch and learn. Yes, we do take it seriously, and it's because it's (mostly) true to life, and the characters are sympathetic. I couldn't give a toss for anyone in Eastenders, but I cried when the roof fell in on Ashley.

I think that this week is the best as this week has been really good, what with the tram off the rails, Sally finding out that her husband was the real dad of the baby, also seeing Kevin stew as well was great.I think that there is going to be more to come, makes you think what they are going to do at Christmas as they always do something great on the soaps at Christmas.

Hello, Joystick. Yes, it's been a great week, and it must have brought in new fans, as well as underlining to the faithful that Coronation Street is still the best soap around. It's quite clever how the big 50th anniversary storyline will keep viewers hooked right up until Christmas and beyond.

While I've watched an episode here and there, I never became a fan of it. My friend Juanita, however, watches religiously. There's some sort of special on tonight on CBC, in addition to the regular airing. I suppose she'll be watching that, too.

Hello, Barbara. Apparently, Coronation Street is very popular in Canada and parts of the States, which is probably why CBS are showing specials. It's the live episode tonight, and I'm really looking forward to it. Not many programmes can claim to be so popular after 50 years - in fact, I don't think there are that many 50 year old programmes around.
