My previous dog used to eat grass only when her tummy was upset. It happened mostly during the night, I don't know why. I heard some rumbling comming from her tummy, and she asked me to take her out. As soon as she was outside, she started to eat grass. After a few minutes of eating grass, her stomach ache seemed to be relieved.
The dog I have now is almost a year old. She had never eaten grass until a stupid veterinarian gave her an antibyotic for nothing. I think her stomach was aching because of the medicine when she started to eat grass. But she made a habbit from eating grass. As she wasn't permitted to eat anything from outside, she was happy that she was allowed to eat... grass. And each time we went out, she ate grass. Then I thought it was the time to told her to stop. So after a few days, she forgot about this habbit. There have been more than 4 month since she ate grass the last time.

Eating grass is common for dogs, especially if they have an upset tummy. It will often make them throw up which is nature's way of treating them. You should make sure that your dog has some grass available that is clean with no pesticides or other contaminants. We live in the country so we don't worry about that.

From my observation with my dogs for so many years, my dogs would eat the grass only when they were sick.
My dogs would smell and choose the right grass to eat. May be they learned from other senior dogs.
Without visiting the doctor, they recovered automatically.
I believe the grass should be a kind of nerbal to dog and maybe for human-being too.
Sometimes, I purposely release my dogs free to eat the grass.

maybe you should not stop it at all, not unless the place is known as polluted or a breeding ground for parasites. I guess it's a natural instinct passed down from his ancestors when the modern dog breed evolved ( if you believe in evolution)to become the modern breed when he senses something is lacking in his diet like vitamin c or folic acid, anyway haven't you observed that he only eats specific kinds of grass unlike what a cow does? I was thinking maybe it is also some kind of medication or a way to rid out parasites and certain toxins or an aid to digestion, cause I also observed my dog vomit sometimes after getting quite a dose. Maybe this would make a good thesis for those into veterinary medicine.

In reading through these posts, it is very interesting. I know that dogs eat grass and so does our puppy. But I thought it was just something they did. I had never heard that it might be related to how they felt or that they needed something from the grass.
In the future, I will be much more observant when I see the dog eating grass.

When dogs, or cats, groom themselves they end up with hairballs in their stomachs. When they eat grass it helps them regurgitate the hairball which makes them feel better. Mystery solved.

I have always heard that cats and dogs eat grass when they don't feel well and need to throw up but I am not sure if that is true or not.

So long as the dog doesn't eat so much grass that it makes him/her sick, then there's no real reason to stop the behavior. Dogs and cats often eat grass to help their stomach feel better. It's just a plant. It's like if we eat salad, no big deal.

Eating grass or any other types of greens or vegetables is their way of balancing out their diet or their cure for indigestion.
DON'T TRY TO STOP IT LIVE WITH IT. Try giving your pet more veggies..

I can only guess, which is not the answer that you want, I'm sure. I was standing on the back porch with Moses one day, and all of a sudden he made this loud whimper sound and ran to the back yard and started eating grass. I was amazed and wondered 'what in the world'. I told some people about it who also didn't know why.
Since then, I've seen him do that a couple more times. I'm assuming, it's something that his system is lacking that causes some kind of physical or mental reaction that tells him he has to have whatever chemical is in that grass. That's all I can figure out it can be.

Usually the dog is eating the grass because there is a deficiency in the dog's diet. Provide your dog with a well-balanced diet. Dogs might eat grass to balance their diet when they feel the need for greens. Consider giving your dog broccoli, green beans or another green vegetable in addition to his normal diet. This can regulate his eating and keep him healthy.
Another chance it is just becomes habit for some dogs. They just like to graze. Here are some ways to get your dog to stop eating grass. Make sure to teach your dog the command"Drop it." If your dog has something in his mouth you don't want him to eat, Discourage your dog from eating grass. A gentle tug on the leash should give your pet the message. When he takes a bite of grass, tell him to drop it and remove the grass from his mouth. Give him a treat as soon as him mouth is free of grass. Repeat this process until he will spit the grass out on his own.

I have always heard that dogs and cats will eat grass when they are sick. My parents told me this when I was much younger. Apparently they will eat grass when they have a stomach ache.

As it goes for your question , i am a dog owner myself , i have a verry great and smart and sweet little girl dog , and when i used to take her to the walks , while back in the summer , automne or spring , sometimes she would eat the grass , not every time i walked her out , but for about fifty pour cent of the time she would eat it , and when i told these to more then one persones i have got the same respones , when a dog eats the grass it is because they are having stomach ackes , or simply they have a stomach problem , or sometimes it might be because they have a bad digestion from what they have eaten , now it is winter here in Belgium , and it has snowed for almost a complete week , of course my baby girl ( my dog ) love the snow , and when she goes out she is crazy about it , she runs in all the directiones and she often puts her nose and mouth in the snow , she is really lovely when she does so .
I hope my answer camed to your help , and i also hope that you have gotten the most accuratte and truthfull answer from one of or numerous great mylot members.
