So, Christmas is right around the corner and we're planning our dinner...it's just Hubby and I but he likes a nice dinner. We have baked ham, deviled eggs, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole and green bean casserole. For pies we have apple and blueberry.
I've never made green bean casserole but I really want to try it...anyone have any suggestions for it?
What are you having for Christmas Dinner? Will you be cooking it? How many are you feeding?

I will be at my brother's house, and we all cook together. I have no idea what the menu will be but it will be good. I will take some home made breads and some desserts or salads or appetizer. Green bean casserole usually is drained french cut green beans mixed with mushroom soup, topped with the French Fried onions. Some people put pimentos for color, or cheese. Recipe is on the onions, on the mushroom soup and on the bean cans usually. Your dinner sounds really nice.

Sounds wonderful. I did not cook. We ate at a nice resort and will do that again next year I am sure. I ordered blackened catfish but the waiter brought salmon by mistake, so I got a free desert. Usually I like roasted duck for Christmas.
As for the bean casserole, Christmas is over, but those are good any time. Here is an alternative to the way too salty mushroom soup and French onion version:

I really don't think they need the salt and sugar, though. I would leave both of those out. There is enough salt in the saltines and if I were to use canned beans instead of fresh ones, I would drain the liquid off and soak them in water and then drain it off again a couple times to reduce the amount of salt in the canned beans.

Christmas dinner here (the 24th) was turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy, green beans, red cabbage, yams, carrots, cranberries and rolls. The 25th at my dad's was prime rib, asparagus and scalloped potatoes.

On Christmas eve we're going to have a pork roast, purple cabbage, and German potatoes, with a black forest cake for dessert. Not sure what we'll have on Christmas day, since we haven't seen the hotel menu yet. LOL We're going away for the weekend, and having a nice romantic Christmas together, with no one else around. It's going to be great!

Oh yummy!! Green bean casserole is 'OH SO GOOD!!' You'll need to get the recipe from the French's Fried Onions container. It is so very easy and it tastes so good! When hubby and I lived in Texas, our next door neighbors daughter would come over and get some when ever we made it. She just couldn't resist. lol

Sounds like a nice dinner you have planned. I had wanted to have ham too but my granddaughter is doing it and she must not be getting enough turkey. There will be six of us. I like blueberry pie but not the apple although it is a good reason to have vanilla icecream. My advice on the bean casserole is DON"T do it! Yuk! I have had it several times and it is gross.

hi sorry i dont know green bean casserole. I presume it is with runner beans?
I will be cooking the dinner this year with some help from everyone! We have got my eldest daughter and her husband coming for the actual dinner but will be seeing my son and family and daughter and family.
For dinner we will be having a turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, mashed and croquet potatoes, with pigs in blankets (small sausage with bacon wrapped around it) carrots brussels and gravy.
A christmas pudding with the traditional coin in it with ice cream or custard.
We will then be having turkey cold, turket sandwiches and anything else i can think of to do with the turkey after christmas lol

I absolutely love green bean casserole, but I don't have a real fancy recipe that I use to make it. I tend to buy a canister of the french fried onions and there is a recipe for green bean casserole that is right there on the canister. That is the recipe that I use when I make it. The only suggestion that I would make sure to follow is to not try to use the cheddar french fried onions because we tried that last year and it really didn't taste very good at all.

Hiya twoey,
Now that is something I would really like myself but I have to go with what everyone else here wants. They will want Roast Lamb with something or another I am still making up my mind.
I won´t be able to really roast the Lamb so I will have to stew it as the Oven I have is completely useless. It´s not my oven anyway it´s the owners so he can buy a new one if he wants.
I loved making Casseroles in England as they have high quality Ovens both electric and Gas. With Casseroles you can cook many vegetable Dishes and make really good Pies too. I really miss having a good oven but this is not my House so until I get one I have to make do with what I have now. To compensate I have bought extra Saucepans so I can be a bit more versatile.
Mainly I put Potato Salad and lettuce and tomato as well. Prefer a nice natural Soup to start off with but this time I don´t know as they complain a bit. They like to groan sometimes but in the end I will put what I feel is right and seeing as nothing is open that Day they will end up eating it.
Have a great Day and enjoy it all.xxx

Christmas isn't much fun for me anymore. I used to do all the cooking... a huge buffett of everything. Now, I have had to hand the torch to my kids and they do it all. It is nothing like I used to do, limited food and even more limited desserts and cookies and such. I never realized until a few years ago when I gave it up, how much it meant to me and how much I loved doing it all. I sure miss it. I also had to give up giving stockings to the kids and grand kids. With divorce on both kids, they get a stocking from Santa at mommy's house and daddy's house. I just couldn't take the risk of them not enjoying the Santa theme by telling them Santa left them a stocking at Nanny's house too and then just be taking it to them at their house. I don't even decorate my house anymore cause with no kids..it just isn't any fun and far to much work!
But I will have baking cookie day tomorrow with the grand daughters so that will be my christmas kid fun. We go to my son's house about 2 hours away but his new wife..I just don't feel to welcome there and then both kids have to leave early to get to their other parents house.

If weather permits I'll be going to see my dad and stepmother 30 miles away. But we may have a bad winter storm so I took their present over yesterday!
Green bean casserole is easy but put aside some fried onions while you bake it. The recipe says to mix some in and that flavors it nicely but don't put them on top until the last 5 minutes of baking. That way they will be crispy, not soggy, and your casserole will be delicious!

This year we are having Christmas at our house for the first time we have both sets of parents coming and a few more rellies. I am starting to get abit nervous hoping that I have enough food to feed everyone I'm sure I will end up with more than enough, but you know how it is when you are feeding alot more than you are used too. We are going all out lots of nibblies to start the day, roast pork and vegies and baked ham plus desserts. One year I would like to spend the day with just my Hubby and 2 kids I think it woud be nice and quiet instead of running around trying to please everyone, but that may be a few years away as the kids are still young and the grandparents enjoy spending the day with them. Which is fine especially since they are all coming to us this year.
