I am wondering what you think re: companies that declare new unpaid holidays

I am working as a contract employee and am frankly tired of it...
I just today got told that I will not be able to work on Monday as work has just decided to give me an unpaid holiday on the 27th...I am upset as I will be at least $80 short from my paycheck in January because of it and rent and all of my other expenses will not be going down.
I thought that companies were supposed to have a schedule of holidays and stick to it... I did not think that they could just schedule a unpaid holiday at 5 p.m. less than a week from the new unpaid holiday.
Is it just me or does it seem to be unfair and unkind?

I agree that it doesn't seem fair or kind to you, but perhaps the company is in financial trouble? Some companies have tried to save money by giving unpaid days off, so maybe that's what they're doing. It would be better to lose a day's worth of wages than to lose your job altogether, I think.

peavey that is what I said look a lot of people out here do not have a job as they were laid off for months and for every job opening there are a hundred people applying so better cut back than given a pink slip; this kind of thinking unfair makes those of us dealing wih joblessness
a feeling of anger. I think that all who still nhave jobs should be damned
grateful.around here a lot of companies are closing some of their stores as if people in their region are out of work they are not going to be'
buying like they did before. now i see empty stores all over Califronia.

I read your response and agree with it. Those who have jobs should be grateful even if they don't get as many hours or days as they are used to or might want. Not having a job is a lot worse than losing a day's work.
I'm not in California, but I see a lot of empty stores here, too. Businesses are hurting and many are just trying to stay alive.

I don't understand what you're thinking. Why don't you have a discussion with your boss about this matter?

whiteheron because of the bad economy here in the US a lot of companies are doing this same thing so do not take it personally my:God look be damned glad you still have a job, as a lot of people here in California do not.Companies are still cutting back.It is not a matter of fairness or unfairness evidently your company rather than just going ahead and laying off you and others is actually trying to save your jobs by cutting company expenses. with so many unemployed companies are not making the same amount of profit as before.like I say be glad you still have a job.sure you will miss that but just cut back on other things and make up the 80 dollars. Sorry I cannot weep as my son is aching to get a job right now and still had not found a full time job. for every
opening there ar e several hundred to apply. So be glad it was not
a pink slip.

From what I understand private businesses can do pretty much whatever they want, however unfair, as long as they meet the minimum safety and severence laws.

I work as a contractual too. I guess what I signed is that I don't get paid holidays if I work. So what I do is I tried not to work holidays. Fortunately ,I have it in my contract that I can do my own schedule so I don't need to work if I don't want to. Yes it is part of being a contractual worker that they tell you when you can work. But in my contract I can refuse the day they want me to work and I can choose another day. Although you are right, some contractual jobs are unfair and unkind. If you are not happy in your present job try to look for something else. That is what I do.

It is really unfair, but the thing is, you are contractual employee and the disadvantage is you don't get the benefits of a regular employee. Labor laws in different countries differ from each other, but in my home country, it can be done. However, in this country I work now, if you are a contracted employee, it can't be done because the minimum contract is for two years.Check the labor law in your country if it is legal or not.
