I Am Good! Is this Positive Thinking Or Being Egoistic?

Hi MyLotters,
I have been reading many stuff these days on Positive Thinking and many advocates believe that you should start with the thought -
1. You Are Good.
2. Everything around happens for good
.......
......
Now, when I sit back and think, I am feeling confused with these. I feel when I am thinking I am Good or even Best, I can sound Egoistic.
Also, thinking that everything happens for good makes me ponder - if everything was for good, we all would have been a happy happy lot and that also meant there was nothing that we can do in many matters... I think this is just turning away fron the facts.
Please Suggest Where I am Missing the lines.
Cheers,
theSids.

Hey Sid,
Thanks, for asking a question such systems really forces you to deal with. :O)
Now, I'm no purist in any system. If that disqualifies my answer, in your mind, don't sweat it! Hahaha! :P
However, from within this tradition, here's what I believe the intention to be. First of all, it's definitely a good idea to think "I am good." I mean, how's that egotistical? You're not comparing yourself directly to anybody. You're just recognizing your natural validity and NOT picking on yourself. You've got the right to take up the space you take up.
Another way to look at it is that you should be your own best friend--no matter what. You always do what you do with the intention of caring for yourself. It's true for everyone, however you are responsible for your own well-being. And you should honor that.
Now, "I'm the best" is another matter. :P
This involves competition and suggests that life is a zero-sum operation (Someone must win and all others must lose). That's likely to stick in your graw--with the exception of when you ARE in a competitive contest. I mean, if you're in a race, you DO want to beat the competition. And, if you're a boxer--Well, let's be real, now! ;O)
The other thing is that--as Abraham-Hics likes to put it, "What other people think of me is none of my business."
There does come a time, you know, when you've got to break away from the pack. And they may act none too happy about your choice. It helps to build somewhat of a tough skin and teach yourself to hear a snide remark and react internally with words like, "I'm willing to be the metaphysical exception on this." Or, "That doesn't matter. All's well in my world."
Obviously, there's a lot more to be said, but I've gone on long enough, Sid.
I see you coming up with a balance that works for you! :D
Sunshine & Blessings,
Giovani

Hi Giovani (aka gsaintiny)
Whew!
That was a long one indeed but I appreciate your taking the pain to write and put it beautifully. From the above, I would put this line on my screen saver right now... ok, Put It now - as Abraham-Hics likes to put it, "What other people think of me is none of my business.". I do find that of value and use right now. That should prove that I was not flattering you and I really meant to say
Oh yes, welcome to MyLot dear and if this is how you are planning your discussions, I am your friend - I love such informative discussions.

I guess it depends upon you. It's a form of self-appraisal, and doing that is good to everyone specially to you. It shows being optimistic and positive. "I am good, I am the best, I can do it" say it often to yourself coz' it gives more energy and determination to accomplish something that has to be done.
Also, it's kinda self evaluation.
But then, sometimes, if you say that "to others" just to make yourself good to them, it's egoistic and obviously you are just seeking for attention.
Have a great.. :)

I don't think it is being egoistic, it's just that you are starting to see things with different eyes! If all people saw things with those eyes, this would be a more positive world! When you start seeing things that way, you will soon find that everything around you starts being positive too! It is like when one smiles, suddenly everybody seems to be smiling back at you!

A very nice discussion topic-THere is such a thin dividing line between self-confidence and self- conceit that borders on arrogance and egoism. Unless you have the feeling'I am good', your self esteem would always be shaky and you cannot achieve anything. So, this positive estimate about oneself is essential for performance. 'One must aim high for the skies ; you would at least reach the tree tops. Unless you think you are capable how can you aim high? It is not possible.
When you think you are good and do not have an open mind, then your learning stops.THis is egoism. YOu feel you have achieved everything , there is nothing more to learn. THis also arises with the excessive feeling of 'I am good'. One needs to be aware of the fact that however good a person is there is always scope for improvement. Only when this is not there, Egoism arises.
Regarding the other statement that everything happens for good, this once again helps us maintain our balance and peace.I exclude natural disasters, misfortunes from this .Regarding so many otehr petty inconveniences, we see people complain about the slightest thing at times. THis feeling of 'everything is for our good' helps during such times.

Well, to elaborate on the second statement, if there is an accident or a calamity, how can anyone think that it was for one's good? A person will only be miserable and then slowly resign himself to God's will. On the other hand, for a simple plan in life, say , missing a job interview, not getting the desired results despite putting in maximum effort in some venture, thoughts like ' it is for my good because there is something better lined up for me /GOd has other plans for me; He has provided an opportunity to correct my mistakes; let me see the good in this" would help a person maintain peace of mind.
Ultimately we all need a positive thinking and attitude

Hi Kala,
Thanks for the appreciation of the discussion. I must say that I am awed reading the way you have put it and it has helped me identify the subtle difference between the two states - Egoism and Good Thinking.
Telling us about the exclusion part from the second thing was quite essential and you are very correct and convincing. (I say convincing because as of now I think I would sit back and re-think about what was my view of the whole statement... these seem to be so very confusing for a starter).

Hi theSids,
When you tell yourself that you are good, it does reflect your confidence in yourself. However, your second statement is more towards positive thinking. I normally believe that everything around us happen for a reason. Even though on the outset, it may seem that the happening is a bad incident, but I always look at it from a positive point of view.
Happiness does not only depend on your positive thinking. There are other elements that is pertinent for happiness. For instance, my friend related to me a story. His friend lend $25,000 to another friend. But he ran off with the money, most likely he has left the country and will never return. Every day he kept thinking about the money, trying to think positively that it will come back. But it is already bordering on wishful thinking. After a while, he decided to let it go. Once, he let go, he could feel his mind clearer and he become happier rather than worried about the money.

Hi Syndey,
That was an eyeopener for me... though it was sad to read about the hoax friend running away with the amount but I get the point here. Freeing up the mind from the things that are bad allows you to have a clearer and more open mind... And yes, one needs to learn from every experience - good or bad - but one must be open to learn and deliver

If you say it to yourself for encouragement then it's positive thinking. If you boast it to others then egotistic.

The core philosophy of positive thinking is that if we say and believe the right things, then we will feel good. We will feel better about ourselves and our lives. I will admit, there is some truth in this. However, if it is just positive words with no other basis, then eventually we will find that positive thinking is not enough.
As far as number 1, a Christian might change it to: "God is great, and I am blessed."
What is interesting about the second point is to ponder the basis for such a broad statement. This is not just about me maintaining a positive outlook on life, but about why things happen the way they do. The Christian enjoys a very similar promise from God because God is active every moment of every day working in the lives of people. So there is a rational reason to believe such a statement.
Romans 8:28 (ESV)
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
But we must bear in mind that the promise is meant for those who love God and are called according to his purpose.

Hi Dj,
Words should have a meaning and some weight too. I believe and agree with you that those who believe in God are able to realize ore things and the feeling of being blessed is really great. It actually gives a lot of patience and confidence that helps us though the bad times and also makes us feel happy that the ill fated days are short and would go away soon.

There is nothing wrong with you thinking or even saying I Am Good. Because you are. You are a good man Bhai.I have a problem with the idea " Everything happens for good." I can see that a good thing can come out of a bad, like the Modern State of Israel and WWII.But that Everything happens for good is a little too much for me.
Saying I'm good doesn't mean a person is an Egoist. In some cases it is just stating a fact of life.

I too understood the same when it was Everything happens for good but the discussions above pointed out that this actually stands for the results and not the events... Going by that theory... well there may be some who would say that there were positive results too

Everything around happens for good doesn't mean that everything is good and makes you happy.
My husband and I lost our boat dealership - that was heartbreaking, until my husband finally went to a doctor that he had been needing to see for months. Turned out he needed FIVE heart bypasses and was put in the hospital ASAP. Had we not lost the dealership, he would have kept putting off the doctor visit and I would be visiting his grave.
My sister's husband went bipolar and threatened to kill her. That was bad, but I had always wanted more time with my sister to get to know her better since my brother and I left home when she was only twelve. We got a year together before her husband got medical help and went on medication to keep his mental illness under control. She and he are back together and happier than they ever were. That's good.
We owned and rented a trailer. It went empty and we had to still pay $550 in ground rent for it. We began helping homeless people by giving them a place to stay for a little while. We also helped get work for them. That was good.
We lost our home when my husband had a massive stroke and we moved to another state to get additional medical help. Hated losing our home, but we couldn't pay rent and a mortgage, too. We discovered that the place we moved to had the most amazingly helpful neighbors either of us ever had and we are now near our son and daughter-in-law, who we used to see maybe once a year.
Bad things happen, but if you pay attention, you'll see good things come from them.
Telling yourself you are good is so much better than finding constant fault with yourself, isn't it? Instead of living down to your faults, you will find yourself living up to your new expectations.

That is what the theory says too - Bad things happen, but if you pay attention, you'll see good things come from them. - it is about finding out happiness and seeing the brighter side in whatever situation you are in.
I can understand the pain and gloom that you were into while in that bad phase of life. And I must say that you held on to your nerves and that was just because somewhere deep within you knew - these days would pass by and things would be good after this. This is where the Positive Things come into play. Right?
This discussion has been a real eye opener for me.

Well, we are not perfect as human. And human is never perfect.
To my thought, telling yourself that you are good isn't egoistic. But this thing is different when you tell yourself that you are good and then you go acting like a genius and stop hearing others' comments or suggestions.
When you act that you are so good and you keep thinking that you are too good to listen to others, nah! That's the sign of egoistic.
Positive mind can bring out positive attitude. Keep it in balance. Don't over react on it...

Hi dear,
From my experience, these kind of corporate terms and business usages are a kind of psychological movement to make people to work hard and pin out whatever is left in the bin. In other words, they (the trainers) want to fish out the last fish also from the pond. Positive thinking is the latest version of exploitation for compulsion. We have such so many such words user for making the 'ordinary' to work hard.
They want us to come forward with the extras what we have and many are juice out the essence in the name of positive thinking. If you think, you will come to know why I said this. Few exceptional cases it can be applicable. The lazy will be lazy for ever and the hard-workers will show their talent and courage wherever they are engaged.
I think these all are the modern weapons and techniques of the older for for hard work. If the same usage repeated, the VIP white colors would be jobless. Also they need to research more to get another group of common people to get readily trained.
(Sid - there are a lot of twists in discussion, and I think you may be following why and what I am telling - you can always open to me and I found few of our followers are unable to the implied meaning as they are mostly straight.)
Thank-s

The words have changed no doubt but I think this has been brought about keeping the modern times in view. Earlier life was simple, living was easy and people had less stress. Today when all of this is missing, they do need some respite and so the language has a new vocabulary and different meanings.
And for many, they have and would continue to misuse misguide and mislead just to make themselves better off.(that was for the corporate and VIP segment you mention)

hi sid
I guess thinking positively in worse or bad condition can really lead us to well.. I mean for example when we are loosing some game and thinking that i am good and i can win this one will surely boost up our confidence. And thinking that i am the only good here will going to be call pride rather then positive thinking.
As per my experience positive thinking is important. It will not solve the problems but it will help us to solve our problem smoothly.

I am a dominant type of person as I would admit. I like things to be done my way maybe because I am a perfectionist too. But I don't do this because I know too well but because I want them to experience the same success as I have when they do it my way. But then again we are bound in different paths but of the same success and this might be possible.

Being dominant doesnt always imply that you are always correct in whatever you do. For that I think some other traits must be with you - like the knowledge of good and bad. If anyone has that and does things for good, I think the positive thinking automatically follows

Hello! Happy new year! It's been a while since I logged in to mylot. Anyways, yes that is quite true. well the sid for a good start you need some confidence which you can never have if are thinking negative about it at the starting.
all the things happens for good is really a true word.like if have lost a mobile phone(which i have lost recently) will make you alert so that anyone never get to your phone in heavy.so that is a kind of defence you learnt from that part of life.
a positive thinking always makes you mentally power full.but too much positive thught makes you over confident who becomes very prone to lose..
so have faith, have confidence and think positive..

i think that thinking positively have nothing to do with being egoistic... positive thinking is closely related with self-confidence and pride... being a positive thinker is good because you can motivate and push yourself forward... but if you overdo it, that's when it becomes bad because of excessive self-confidence which in time can turn people into a proud person... this is what i think... take care and have a nice day...

Well, it's all in the mind. Because it's like, when you tell yourself that you're happy or you can do it, and words like this, it actually tells your mind of a positive outlook that's happening, which will make you happier. Besides telling yourself positive things, you also have to keep in mind to do positive actions too. It's important to do it so that it'll not become just a lip service. I did that too and it worked!

Hi JudgeIronFist,
Yes, I have realized the importance of positive actions too... Though this time it was late, but yes, they are now coming in and I can feel the change. But as a newbie here, I at times, get back for sometime and that confuses me. I think in the coming days, I would be the better person - more positive in thoughts and deeds.
I would be careful and keep in mind that it doesnt remain just a lip service

Hi sids..
I am good because i have belief on myself. Someone may criticize me in different ways but i am not to listen or to change myself. I better know who and what i am. this is my motto.
Here, just check it changing the view. Just think i am bad and i have all those bad aspects i the world. Do you think that life would be beautiful and charming after then? So be positive, think positive and life will run positively. Have a nice day.

I better know who and what i am If that one is for all Yes, no one knows us better than we do for ourselves, our capacities and limitations.
I want the life to be happy and pleasant for me and others around me and this is why I started thinking on these line... Late but better late than never...
Already feeling happy that I am now more confident and coming out of the shell that I used to hide the real me.

I think those Positive Thinking stuff lines are not being realistic. We can never be the best, as that can only be seen from a subjective point of view. Also things don't happen for good or bad, they just happen. What's good or bad is not the intention, but the result, and the end of the action is what make us think that it was good or not.
I think it's cool to try to think positive, as that can make or lives a little happier, but thinking too much in a positive way is not realistic, and can lead to a deception in the end, when we find out that not ourselves neither things are that good in reality.

Positive thinking is something I had to learn the hard way this full year, but is has given me a more broader perspective in life my friend. Alongside positive thinking one must also have plenty of hope.
I find I have been sort of a negative thinker where as I use to always worry about the what if. Having gone through so many issues this year I finally learned to think positively and have hope for a brighter future. As the negativity had me so worried that I could not have a bit of hope.

Hi Hardworking,
That is so very similar to my story... I was told by many - I am the greatest of all the negative thinkers But over the last few months, something good has been happening and I am feeling to turn on the tables now.
I must admit that HOPE is the main factor for me too. I had lost hope and that was more depressing and when you are depressed things do look gloomy. Good now that the clouds are clearing up and skies seem to be more friendly.
For you - Reading and interacting on some discussions from you, I feel looking up to you as an icon for many around.
