Full service gas stations...

Mom and I were having a discussion this morning, because she was filling up her gas tank the other day and it overflowed. The gas, she says, went all over the ground. She sat inside her car while it was filling up, and before she knew it...it was spraying all over the place. The gas station credited her $2. It was the be best they could do she said. I was thinking, it would be so much easier if we had full service gas stations again, where they washed our windows, checked our oil, etc..And then the stations would not have to worry about "drive off" cars. Thoughts?

Hmmm...that's really strange. I haven't had my tank overflow on me before. There's this trigger thing that automatically stops the pumping once the gas reaches a certain amount. I always assumed that this was a universal thing but I guess that's not the case. I have to admit that a full service gas station would be great. It means jobs for people as well as me not having to pump my own gas. I've been to a few of those gas stations up in Oregon and they are handy.

And, with a full service gas station, we women don't have to worry about smelling like gas! My Mom said the the clerk said the pump was "sticking."

I live in one of the last remaining states with complete full service and I HATE it. Don't get me wrong; I'm not a big fan of pumping my own gas, and if full service was performed as you describe, I would love it. But I can't even remember the last time someone checked my oil or washed my windows, and I often have to wait FOREVER to get any service, not because there are long lines, but because the attendants generally take their slow sweet time helping the customers--they are too busy texting, or talking on their phones, or chatting with their friends. And they will often disappear inside with your credit card for 10 minutes or more, so you can't even just give up and leave.
Perhaps at places that offer both full and self-serve, the customer service is still actual service, but, unfortunately, at completely full-service stations, it is a thing of the past.

Ah yeah, the cell phone! I think we were jinxed with it's invention. I haven't been to a full service gas station in years, and my kids probably don't even know what one is :)

The small town I grew up in had a full service station, so I was used to that. When I moved and had to use self-serve, I wasn't so impressed, but now that I am used to it, I do figure it is the best way to get the job done. But in the winter, it can be quite cold.

It is worth discussing, anyhow. One question would be how much more would they charge for gas to have a person running the pumps? The service would be nice, but not everyone would be comfortable having a stranger look under the hood.
There is a gas station in Portland Oregon that I have gone to a couple of times and it does not have self-service. Now this is not full service like it used to be, but the guy actually does pump your gas. That part is not too bad, but I was a little nervous when I gave him my card to pay. When is the last time you have given your credit or debit card to a stranger that is out of your view?

I would be nervous about handing my debit card to a stranger. I would have to go back to using "cash only!" But most people are honest. I found one service gas station a couple years ago...in a small PA town, on my way home from New York.

There are days when that would certainly be nice. We would always know if we had enough oil that's for sure. It is not so fun to open up the hood and check when it is 10 degrees outside. Of course those services did cost extra money but there are some days when it would be worth it to pay the extra money to get everything done for me.

Oh yes, especially when it is really cold outside...and it gets cold here in Michigan.

Yes, Fill'er up!!! Check under the hood, tires, and wash that windshield. Some used to give stamps where you could get free gifts after so many trips to their station. The best part would be that your hands would never smell like gasoline after your tank was full. Yes. it is a good idea. It might even supply jobs for somebody. God knows, we could use more jobs.

I have been saying this for years, however I know that this will never come to pass again in most places. We have gas stations here that have as many as twenty pumps. Can you imagine how tough it would be for a gas station of that size to offer full-service? Also, can you imagine how expensive it would be to pay enough people to operate a full-service gas station of this size efficiently? Most gas stations would not be able to pay such an expense.
A couple of years ago, I was driving through a small town in Georgia, and I saw a sign on the pumps of a gas station that read Full-Service, then I noticed that the place was actually open, so I pulled in to check it out, because I was getting low on gas anyway. Sure enough, less than thirty seconds after I pulled in, a man came out started talking to me. I told him that I needed to fill my truck up with gas, and he promptly started pumping it for me. I got out and walked into the store and waited on him to finish pumping the gas so I would know how much I needed to pay. He didn't check my oil, but he DID clean my windshield for me! I bought a soft drink and a snack, paid for my gas, and was on my way. It was a nice reminder of my childhood during the early 1980's when this was a common practice at the gas stations in the small town I grew up in.
My uncle owned one such "service station" as they were known, and I remember going there with my dad when I was a kid. There was an old man back home that owned a station like this well into the year 2000, and when I got married and moved away in 2001, he was still providing full-service, although he was getting so slow in his old age by this time that it was faster to get out and do it yourself most of the time.
I have always wanted to buy a small gas station like that and offer full-service to my customers. I would try to make it as close to the way that it was back then as I could. I think it would be a good selling point, and that it would bring in a lot of customers once the word got out. A lot of people who remember these days would probably bring there kids just to show them what it was like back then.

I remember the days od full service gas stations. They were convenient and did everything for you. there was no self service unless it was something you wanted. now all you can find is self service. With full service, they would always be in charge.Sometimes i think we should bring full service back.

Yes, I think it's time. It would take a strong person to make it work.

Here in india we call it as 'Petrol Pump', when ever i go to fill my car or bike, i stand in front of tank, see the meter reading, then only i pay.
Here they have washers but charges are high, we wash at home..
Thank you so much for sharing.

i understand what you are saying. the way of the full service gas stattion is gone. a memory in the pages of our minds. the reason you don't see them is because to have some one pump your gas, wipe your windows, check your tires and check under the hood is that federal law says you have to charge at least 3 cents a gallon more for gas if you do. with gas prices being so high snd economy being so bad no one wants to pay the extra money anymore.
