Do you think the economy is improving?

I was hearing reports that spending was up 3.3% for the holiday season, people are buying cars and houses again, but is it just the calm in the storm, like the eye of a hurricane, or are we really through the worst of it?
Me personally, we are struggling more now than we were a year ago this time. We are really penny pinching, and every penny we earn on sites like this are going to pay bills instead of being used towards fun stuff like a bigger Christmas.

No, the media is doing this to give false hope, that is my opinion. If you think about it those kind of reports come out this time of year, every year.
We are in our worse time here. Barely making ends meet. If it wasn't for the landlord we have, we wouldn't have a place to live. The house is falling apart, still it is a place for us at this time.
Like you every cent I make here I give to my daughter to help pay for bills or get food. Christmas was us being together and happy with that. Sharing a meal that the church brought to us as a gift for the holidays. Other wise it probably would of been Hamburger helper again..
All in all, we are happy we have made it this far, that is our gift for this holiday.

I know how it is to not let certain family members know what your going through.. They just feel there is a solution and we just can't see it, or something like that.
When I talk to my family,(they are not close by) I let them talk about what is going on with them and such. By the time they are done one of needs to get off the phone for one reason or another..lol Works for me.
We are blessed because we are making it with what and how we can.
May God Bless you and yours today and everyday..

Hamburger helper is one of the staples in our household. My daughter, who is two will actually eat it so that is a step in the right direction. I to have had to rely on help from local charities in order to make ends meet. We are doing our best to not let my mother in law know the extent of our problems while she is here, because she would make a big deal out of it and ruin the spirit of the season.

They have made a few comments about how cold we have the thermostat set in the house, but i think that is more because they have lived in Arizona for a few years now and are not used to the cold. We keep it set at what they did when they were living in Illinois.
I have looked at the problem from every direction. Some of the valuable advice I have received in the past include....you just need to save more. Really, I never thought of that.

I don't think the economy is nearly as bad as the government wants us to believe. People are still buying houses, going on vacations and buying luxury items. They still have all kinds of off road vehicles for toys and are going to the lake every weekend. When we can no longer afford to "play" then I will believe the economy is bad!

I sure hear you! I don't know how some do it either. I know it is very tight for some but so many still seem to be living luxurious lives. I tutor a couple of kids that are seriously rich! It's funny, they don't mind paying 30 bucks an hour for me to tutor their kids! I would choke at the thought! I do not have any play money either. Actually I live in an apartment which is largely paid for by section 8 and except for the tutoring (which I pay 15 for gas and 20 for my daughter to sit with my handicapped son so I can go do it) I make my money online too. So I don't know how people are doing it...I would love to be able to get a real job once again!! But I am discovering a lot online - Oh and I don't even own a vehicle!

My play budget is currently nothing. I have no vacations planned, no new cars, in fact we are not doing an repairs on the house unless it is an absolute must. we are not refinishing our floors or fencing in the backyard. For many, there is no money for the luxuries.
Yes, I still have the internet, but it is used for my husband's job, and i use it to make more money for the house hold, close to what we spend each month on the internet. We also use tools on the internet to save us money, like coupon sites that save me money on my groceries.
If it gets to the point where we cannot afford the internet, I will of course not be on this site anywhere near as much.
i am a normal american. I am right at the median income level. If I am struggling with one child, I do not know how those with more children are doing it.

I wish i could get by without a vehicle. The payment, the gas, the insurance and the upkeep is a huge drain on finances, but my husband and i work in two different directions from home, and there is not public transportation out in the boonies where i live. I would love 30.00 an hour for tutoring. I am a teacher, and when I do tutor it is only 15.00 an hour.

I think that economies are improving worldwide. However, Individuals' and state and central governments' debts should also be reined in, and reduced.

Yes, the economy is really improving. It's been an amazing year this past year, but this next year is going to be even better! I predict an increase in the job market, less competition for the really good jobs, and more spending by the consumers. The stores are going to be crowded with shoppers this next year!!

with my current lack of sleep, that sounds very sarcastic in my head, but i have the feeling that you really mean it. I am glad that you are so optimistic. I hope that that optimism is felt throughout the country/world and that the economy really does improve.

Gas prices do not effect me as much as food prices increasing. I live and work in my town and get good gas milage. We have already cut back as much as we can in that department. We have taken pop out of our diet, and have stocked up on things like rice and pasta meals. We only go out to eat when we have a gift card to a place.

I do understand that the gas prices affect the food prices, and it is probably not really the cost of the food that is increasing. I hope that the crude oil futures will stay the same or decline in the recent months. Hopefully, a new job or the opportunity for a second job will open up for the summer so that we can rebuild our savings.

From where I see things, yes. My work is actually hiring from time to time and it seemed like we weren't for a long period. And my 401K has improved.
Hoeever, it seems like every time a new report comes out, it hasn't improved.
Depends who you talk to I suppose lol

You seem to be one of the lucky ones. My husband and I had to put less into our retirement fund this past year, and the growth hasn't been that great on it. I guess I should be glad that I have a retirement fund at all.
I really feel that my town has not improved. We have more kids on the free and reduced lunch than we did last year.

For me,it seems to b e. For one, gas prices are up over three dollars. I do have a job which I didn't have, althouogh I'm not sure it's the economy as it is I just happened to apply at the right time. As far as this site, I don't even make payout once a year, so I'm not paying bills from this site. As far as people pinching pennys, I think that's going to happen for a while, because of this economy.

I really do not feel that my pinching pennies has hindered my quality of life. We reined in spending on none necessities. We still have some luxuries, like netflix, which we received as a gift, to keep us entertained. My husband and I have not had to sell our house, but we aren't buying as much stuff. We are working on simplifying and enjoying what we already have.

it depends on which area you are talking about
anything that produces necessity, won't suffer as much as luxurious items
banks and govt do have money
but they only spend it on necessities
they might pardon some debts, but only if they could determine whether these debts are due to necessities or not
in terms of houses (I don't know cars) it's actually better to buy them now
house prices are sinking anyway
selling houses, though, is not a good time for it
you won't get what you paid for
I always live within budget, so it doesn't matter the economy is improving or not
I never have much problem with it
if you have done this for many years before recession, like I did, you will not feel so much difference

I still don't feel it happening. Real Estate business is not improving and a lot of business are closing. I just hope that it will come a time that we will all get through this. It's getting hard and frustrating. All we need right now is to keep on hoping.

Well it's that time of year when the TV gives you lots of fascinating facts that you really didn't want to know. Apparently, prices of common items in Greece have increased between 17 and 23 per cent since January. Not helped by 23% VAT.
But surprisingly, Greece's economy is (was) not as bad as many other countries even though it got a bail-out! Worse cases were the United Kingdom AND the United States. So I don't expect any bright news from any area for quite a while yet!

I am in the US. I think we had a few ups and are in the middle of the eye of the storm. We are going to get hit with the back end of the storm. It may not be as bad as the first onslaught, but it is still going to hit us and do some more damage none the less.

According to the government and newspaper report, yes, my country's economy is improving. There is a GDP growth. However, the funny thing is, despite all that were mentioned, it is not felt at the ground level. In fact, people are complaining that their pay cut were not restored and quite a number of them is unemployed.

I guess I do not understand how the governments decide exactly how the government is doing. Is it based on unemployment? Is it based on productivity? Is it based on the stock market? Productivity is supposedly up as is the stock market, but unemployment is still high. All those tax cuts to the rich, that are supposedly giving people jobs, does not seem to be working.

Hi folks
life is tough out in here in South Africa [unemployment 40%].....the bare essentials are going to be unaffordable in a year or two [electricity will go up by about 30% next year]....I hope there is some way for me generate some extra income , I empathize with people battling out there

We are luckily, not quite in that situation, but it is not looking good, especially gas prices and the increase in cost of food. The healthier the food, the more expensive it seems to be. You can buy a lot of empty calories for cheap, but to get a nice balanced diet, it is hard to do that and stay on any kind of budget.

The Media is not to be trusted. The whole the economy is improving hype is just to get people lulled into a false sense of things are going to be okay and to get them out to spend money they can ill afford. I know my family is struggling to keep our utilities paid and food on the table and hubby and I both learned we need dentures and our teeth pulled that is how bad they are. We cannot afford dental care and have not had it due to low income and no insurance. Now we have to come up with $5000 for the two of us to get the remaining teeth pulled we do have and dentures and that is half price. We do not have much time left before we will be in more trouble with our teeth. We are paying off a hospital bill from last year and an attorney from a legal problem. We do not get a cost of living increase again the third year in a row for Social Security and it is not easy living on $1100 per month when nearly half goes to your mortgage. There is not much left for anything after the bills are paid and we live rural. No taking buses etc. Our kids help a bit where they can with groceries and some other things. We go to food banks and clothing banks and make do or do without. No it is not improving. It is maybe the calm before the storm and the storm is going to be off the chart hurricane forces.

I think the economy of the whole world is still rocky. We are still on crisis and that's felt by most of us. Compared before, jobs today require very high qualification and most employees are underemployed. People accept job even they are overqualified for that just to earn a living. So maybe it's because the revelation in the Bible is now happening to us little by little. God's coming is very near. So we have to be prepared for that.

I thought little about economy before. But recently my coworkers whispered about slump of company and how long it could exist. All that I heard made me worried about my job in future.Maybe soon my boss would ask me to his room and tell me I have to leave company for the slump

Oh boy. I think everybody is on the same boat. Money is hard to come by these days, but we just can't help doing needless spending this Christmas season. I do want so much to save instead of spend this holiday season, but it is quite impossible since there are parties and gift exchanges so there is a need to buy gifts for this purpose.

i honestly believe it is going to get alot worst before it gets better. It always goes up 3 or 4 points in oct nov and dec. but then the holidays are over and spending fall back down. we were so bad off that when everything fell we couldn't tell. the problem is that congress is using the taxes to bank roll all thier pet project. They spend money faster than it comes in like with all that bailout. those people just don't get it up there. people are losing jobs and money is tight but they just want to keep adding to the defiect. so until they decide to quit spending and start paying down the defiect then i think it is going to get a whole lot worse.
