Hi,friends,i got a boy who is 9 years old. From several years ago, he began to like reading books. Of course, for me, it is a good thing. He read some fairy tales and some children's stories. From the books, he got to know lots of things. But i can't remember from which day, he began to read detective books:conan ,sherlock holmes......etc. Like reading books is not a bad thing, but now he is too indulged in detective books. And if you let he read other books, like something about writing articals or poem. He got no interest at all. And also because of his indulgence in detective books, he asks for this tool and that tool,in his words, he needs detective tools.I have told him again and again, even you keep on reading Conan, you can't finished reading it.Because there will be more books about it being published. And it is too waste of time and energy. Friends,do you have some suggestion for me to let my boy turn his attention from that kind of books to more useful things?thanks!

Oh no, let him continue reading those books. Trust me, my friend. Actually reading detective books are very good to his mind as it makes your child use his brain more as he thinks of how to solve this and that and the fact that he asks for some tools, has already proved that he's very interested in solving problems and perhaps detective jobs. Detectives solve crimes and it's actually good that your child is interested in that. You are right that those books will keep on being published. Just let it be, it's ok. He's still a child so reading and getting interested in things are part and parcel of his life, at least let it become part of his childhood life. Perhaps, if you are worried about him being addicted, then you can set a timetable for him to help manage his time.

Hi,friend.Just as you said, his detective books make him get too much questions and often ask for this kind of or that kind of tools.Actually, this is one reason i feel headache.Because i can't answer some questions and it is hard to get some tools he requests. Sometimes he let me answer some questions about a case.If i can't answer or just not pay attention to what he says,he will be unhappy. And the other thing is he always asks for multi-functional watch and voice-changing tools which Conan uses in the books. You know,at this time,i get a headache too.

Hi,aprilsong, as we know that , every child has very big curiosity on every things! If not , they will become an old man soon! So that sometimes you should change your mind and just feel free to play with him! Otherwise, generation gap may hinder your communication with him .

Maybe you could try some non-fiction books related to detectives and policework? That will move him a little away from these "addictive" detective stories. Then if he is taking to the books about policework, you can move him to read about other emergency workers, like paramedics and firefighters. Perhaps from there to more books about health, the human body, etc. Fiction books he might like are fantasy stories with a mystery (but not detective) element. You will have to find some that are age and skill appropriate for your son. As a child, you will develop reading skills by reading, no matter what you read! His interests will eventually change, and he will be able to use the skills he learned to open up worlds of knowledge. I wouldn't worry too much about what he likes to read at the age of 9 -- you are ahead of the game because he reads at all!

Thanks for your advise,i will try to guide him to make some changes in the books of reading.Maybe i am too anxious about his indulgence in books because i worry it will influence his study. You know, nowadays in my country both parents and teachers pay more and more attention to kids scores. If you can't get high score, teacher will not treat you as good as others. While if you rank at the top of the class, you can even get lots of privileges. It sounds snobbish, but it is also reality.

Wow, that is terrible. Usually the children with lower scores need more attention because in many cases, if time is taken to explain a different way, they will understand better and improve!

i think reading is a very good habit and you must be happy that your son already develop this good habit since he is so young... may be you can explain to him slowly that he needs to read different type of book as well and not only the fiction detective ones... introduce him to other type of books and give him rewards whenever he finished reading those books... hopefully he will get indulged with other type of books if you keep on doing that... take care and have a nice day...

I think it's good that your boy loves reading as it will help him in his writing too. My daughter is 11 and is also an avid reader. What I notice is that she does go through phases when she is more inclined towards certain genres of books, so not to worry, I'm sure in time to come , your boy will also be reading other genres of books other than detective books.

Thanks, friend.I worry about that because he is too indulged in it.Even when eating the meals,he will taking his books in his hand.Well, yes,as you said,it is not a bad thing to read books. And i hope as time goes on,he will turn his attention to other kinds of books. Thanks again for your post.

Please don't ever discourage his reading habits!! But maybe offer him some sort of deal. Like he has to read something from any genre other than mystery every third or fourth book. Like he can read the three he wants and then has to read some other sort of book (it can be anything he likes except mystery!)... maybe just try it!

Thanks for your advise. But actually,he put too much his heart on it,so when you ask him to do other things.Even he is doing, his heart is not on it. Well, sometimes when you got into something,it is not a easy thing to leave it.We adults sometimes can also be addicted something.Children got much less self-discipline than us.

Actually, I don't think that I would even attempt to deter his interest in what kinds of books he is reading. The reason for that is because of the fact that to make him read things that aren't interesting to him may make it to where he doesn't enjoy reading at all anymore. That said, I know that it can be a pain that he wants to have things that are from the books, but you should be very happy about the fact that at least he does enjoy reading.

ok, actually you must not eliminate your child's interests in reading books because it is good! Comparing with the teenagers now, they only play computer games, neglecting all other things! Gapping at the computer terminal will kill our creativity and imagination at all. Also, it is good that your child shared the content of books with you. Nowadays, teenagers seldom chat with their families because they claim that they had no time. They get to know more abot their peers and neglect you. This will affect the whole-person development. Moreover, with regards to your problems, you should tell your children that he should learn the perseverance and motivation of the detectives instead of learning them to combat crimes. Maybe you can help them to pick up another interest, such as playing basketball. You can simply carry it out by playing it with him when you are free. I am sure your relationship with him will be enhanced and finally you can figure out this problem! Hope you are lucky!
