A lot of people do not say the word of thanks even to those people who serves them, I think they should learn how to say thanks even to waiters or security guards so that they would feel greatful and would love their jobs serving people and will continue serving the people as they feel appreciated. Besides, people who say their thanks even to their subordinates and not their equalls shows a lot about these people. I admire them more.

I really am glad you opened this discussion. I personally say thank you for everything, it's second nature. When I bump into someone, I automatically say sorry. I think it's really important that we should make courtesy our 2nd nature/automatic habit, as not only its good for the other person, but it's showing a good example, and is good for our reputation. People will follow the example of a person with a good reputation. The world has enough rude people, why do we have to add to it?

I like that thought. We are making the world better one person at a time. Courtesy has been missing from our society for awhile. I was always proud when people talked about my kids being well mannered.

Thanks to both of you Maishi and GardenGerty. :) Saying Thanks should really be 2nd nature to breathing. It makes you a better person, feels good to verbalize your appreciation to people. You will see their faces brighten up when they get thanks.

Well, being polite is always the best way to get good service. Those who serve will feel appreciated and serve better even if they don't like their jobs. As far as being polite to subordinates, again its best way to make them more productive. Since i believe we are all equal, i am polite to everyone that deserves it. Many times we take people for granted. For example, our parents or our life's companions and don't say thank you to them and it makes them feel unappreciated. We should be polite to all those we come in contact with. Most will feel better for it.

Yes I agree. People who serves us does not deserve to be taken for granted. Taking them for granted might make them feel we do not appreciate it and they might get tired doing that.

Let me start by saying thank you for opening this discussion. I once worked in a fast-food chain when was in College so I know what's the feeling of being thanked for by customers even they really don't have to. By Hearing those simple words makes my day delightful and inspired.

If that person who serves me is friendly and makes me feel welcome to that place,I definitely say 'thank you'.I really appreciate people who are nice with their customers and always have a smile for everyone, even if they may have problems in their lives, but they manage to hide them and behave like true professional. To these people I will always say 'thank you!'

Sometimes even to those who are not that nice. Try saying thank you, and you will see the change in their behavior towards you. They will go from nasty to nice. Sometimes these people just needs someone who appreciates them. My brother was caught by a traffic police and was asked to pull over. He did not get mad when he was asked to pull over, he asked the man what he did wrong in a mild manner and accepted the violation given to him. This, surprised the traffic guy and told him " you were the first guy to talk to me nicely. I will let you go for now. Just do not do it again ok?" then my brother said thanks! See? you can even get out of a stitch just by being nice.

oh yes... i definitely am... i always thank you to the people who helped me regardless whether i am more superior than them... i never look down on people and i treat everybody as equal... i don't want to be a proud person as it will lead to my destruction... being humble is a good virtue and God blessed humble people... take care and have a nice day...

That is right! not because you are superior to them, makes you a big person for you not to give thanks! and besides, a REAL man knows how to treat their subordinates well and not just their equals.

Yes, I always say "thank you" to anybody who do something for me even I pay them. In the restaurant, i say thank you to the waiters whenever they bring the food I ordered, they pour water on my glass, they bring the bill to me and as I leave the place I say thank you. In public transportation, I say thank you to the bus driver or the taxi driver. However in my home country, this is not practiced, but still i do the same even it looks weird. Whenever I buy something, I say thank you once I got the goods even I paid for it. In hotels or any business establishment, I say thank you to the doorman. To my housemaid, I say thank you whenever they give me something I need or whenever there is an opportunity to say so. Even on the phone, whenever I asked for something or asked any inoformation, I say thank you to the person on the other line. We should say the "thank you" words to anybody who do service or any favor to us no matter what is their standing in the society. This gesture makes them feel appreciated even for little things they do.

Saying thanks is a habit already. I was taught to say thank you everytime somebody serves me. Even if my drink was bottomless I say thanks even if they refill my drinks 13 times! lol! It feels so good to make people feel good. Even if in the Philippines its not practiced to say thanks I do. You see, these people rarely hear people say thank you So its a biggie for them even if its just thank you. I do not understand why other people find it so hard to say thank you.. its free, yet they cannot afford it.

I am really happy you started this topic. I have made it a habit to. Infact I feel you should be all the more careful when you deal with your subordinates etc. Even a smile to security guards would really make them pleasant. Just imagine thier fates they have nothing to do, they sit idol for the whole day, a smile or a hello is what they need.

Yes, a word of thanks makes a difference to someone who are standing up 8 hours a day for 7 days everyday. People learns to have a light heart and motivates them to do their job more.

I am not only kind and thankful to servants and waiters, I make it a point to give them a little tip, you know why? When I was young I had a boyhood friend who became a waiter, he told me how he mess up the food of people who were rude to him, like he will hold the food with his hands or put a little dirt, so every time I remember his story I am always kind to them especially waiters, we are practically at there mercy

hahaha!! when I was in college, I make a mess of people's food as well because I took up Hotel and Restaurant and our first intern was from our school's hotel and I mess their food up by sneezing on it or spitting on it or putting snot on it. When customer's pressures me to serve them first before the others etc. Customers can be such a pain in the you know where.. so I am not hard on them as I know the feeling. That was when I was young and foolish. But as I grow older I get to know better.

I agree. People should be given importance by saying thanks to them. People are doing their job well and saying thanks means giving gratitude for their service. By that way, they would be more inspired to do best one their job. People would be better at service if someone says thanks to them.

Well I think you can just say thank you to anything who does something for you. I say thankyou to everyone who's nice to me, as it's just kind and you'll eventually get something nice in return, just be nice to people, and they'll be nice to you aswell!

I have always made it a policy to be appreciative and grateful for whatever is done for me. Thank you is a small way of reflecting this gratitude. Actually, I feel good when I tell people Thank You.

Yes, I always make it a point to say "thank you" to people who help me out or serve me. I used to work at a fast food restaurant back in the days and just hearing a thank you from the customers really brighten up my day. It showed that people actually appreciated me and it did motivate me to work better. Being able to freely thank people will really go a long way. It makes people more willing and happy to help you out.

This is very good topic I feel. Yes I always try to keep a good relation with my subordinates. He may be the housekeeping boy in my office or security guard but I always give them a smile and wish them in morning. I personally feel this makes them to work comfortably in the office and most of all, they are helping us so I think we should appreciate their work.
