Seriously, do you know of anybody who's afraid of technology?

I think that technology is everywhere, and I am sure that I would have a hard time doing anything if I were afraid of any technological advancement.
Now comes the reason for this discussion. Today I met somebody who I can seriously say is adverse to technology. He doesn't have a celphone because he said that the microwaves is detrimental to the brain. He doesn't trust the internet because he said that it steals personal information. And says computers make people dumb.
Now granted that he is a bit old, and belongs to a different generation, but I still feel that he is missing out on a few things by not getting on with the times.
Now, do you know of anybody who is afraid of technology? If you do, what sort of reasons do they have? Are you like me who needs technology to do every day things? Or does this person I just met have it right? That life should be lived simply without need for techonology? What do you think?

Technology is a necessity to survive into today's working world. I am of the older generation and it was difficult for me to learn about computers etc. But did it. I had to struggle to learn how to use my BB. But I learnt one task at a time and practise that one task until it was mastered. I still continue to learn new things on the computer and sometimes at work have to write down the steps to be taken until it becomes second nature to me. But I refuse to give up.
On the other hand I do sometimes turn off my bb to et some alone time. alone times is necessary to me especially when I get the urge to write something creative.

I guess that's one thing common with us 'older' generation. If we have a will to learn new technology, we just write it down and learn it. As opposed to the kids of today who I think comes out of their mothers already equipped with instruction manuals to today's technology.

Hello cachalot. I took up engineering at university. I think we were the first few batches that used calculators in class. I remember buying a calculator as such a big deal!
Anyway, I guess we all learn and cope with technology. And if it helps as manage our time better, then all the more reason to catch up to it. Thanks.

When you both say you belong to the older generation, cynthiann and bounce58, I feel certain that I belong to an older generation than you. I recall the days when we did not use calculators in the math classes (there weren't any calculators). But apart from that, don't you think the world is a much faster paced one today than it has ever been? I mean, many mothers go out to work just like their men do. Children have great opportunities to join anything from ballet classes to baseball teams, and they have to be driven there. Beats me sometimes how working parents cope. So, it almost a necessity to have technology to cut down on housework, to entertain, to get from one place to another, and to be able to get into contact quickly.
Personally I find technology intriguing and well as a necessity. If I didn't have some technology I couldn't provide this response, could I?
And, while I'm here, all the very best to you and all mylotters for 2011. You all rock!

My parents doesn't know much of technology though. My parents don't have a cellphone themselves, and they simply don't know how to use a computer. They don't have a debit card, or any sort of credit card. They will be glad to use cash only. Or check if there is a big purchase. So, your friend is not the only one.

Glad to know that my friend is not the only one!
With my parents, it also took me a while to get them to use a little bit of technology. But they got so used with me living far away that technology has become a must. Specially now where it's the only way they could talk to their grandkids, as they live half way around the world.
Thanks.

no i don't actually... my parents are not good in technology... but they are not afraid of technology... they are open to embrace new technology when it comes... it just takes longer for them to learn new technology because they are already quite old... take care and have a nice day...

Yes me! I hate phones . I mean I wouldn't even use a regular phone. All calls are about bad news. And I don't see a reason to have a cellphone with me 24/7.The reason it took about 15 years to get me here online is because I Knew computers took away people's jobs and they do. I don't trust Everything online , that is why I have a spam only email address. if I feel a site will just sell my email address I use my spam address. I Never give out my phone number. Why should I? I rarely use the phone.I don't think your friend is missing a thing. If he Really thinks that a cell phone will shorten his life and that somehow using a computer will make him dumber , how fun will it Really be? How much time will he Really spend online? Leave him alone. And don't pity him , I don't I respect him. He is going his own way . And he is happy with it. I Hate it when people assume everyone is online or on facebook. I maybe online but I am not on facebook. Not Everyone Will be online. And making them get online or else will not work.

Not everyone Needs the new toys to live well.I think the " You Must have a computer or you are somehow behind the times" is an adult form of peer pressure. That;s why I admire your friend. I see a little of myself in him. He is saying F@ck you , I don't need all of this stuff to live well! Bravo!

Well, you got that right. He is doing his life his own way. And no amount of advances in technology can change his mind otherwise.
And I realize that you're right. He doesn't need pity. I think what he deserves respect for living simply, and making it work.
Thanks Sarah.

my mom is not afraid of technology but sometimes she doesn't wanna bother with it. i tried to teach her how to use the web for facebook and everything but she doesn't want to. she said she doesn't have time since we have a snack house and she's the cook and we have 5 dogs that she tends to.
but she already tried to use my samsung wifi so maybe she'll get the hang of it sooner. since i don't want her not to be able to communicate with me through the web in case i'll go out of the country again.

ya there are many people who are afraid of technology especially the old age people Because they find it very much difficult to get used to this changing generation. They prefer their old age methods to use in everyday life.

Hi bounce. We're both alike, since we need technology to do our everyday stuff. I inhale technology. LOL. Seriously, I'm not the type who needs to immediately buy the latest technological gadgets. But I also have to have for my everyday life the following: mobile phone, Internet access, audio player, and cable TV. I guess I like keeping in touch and keeping up with the rest of the world. Which is why I'm so dependent with the stuffs that I mentioned. Anyway, cheers and Happy new Year to you and your family. :)

I'm also not the one to buy a new gadget immediately. I would rather have a few people test it out first, before I get my own.
I just got my BB, and I have been enjoying it. It is very useful and has even helped me in the few chores that I do everyday. So, I'm not at the forefront, but definitely don't want to be left behind.
You too! Hope the coming year brings you a little bit more happiness!

I think that the person you are talking about does have a point and some f the things he said are factual. I don't really know anyone wh is afraid of technology.. But I do knw some peple who are afraid of elevators, escalators, don't have cell phones, don't use computers and stuff. Their ages are 20-40 years old.

I can't imagine not being able to live today with the technology features and gadgets. I am sure if forced I would be kicking and screaming.
However, I do know few who do not, simply because they do not want to change their ways. I do not think they are afraid of the actual gadgets, but simply not fully or properly informed. As those who say cancer from cellphones, these are the ones who do not broaden research, to find out if it actually is true or incorrect. Also, these are people who are simply accustomed to their ways in life and nothing and no one can change that.

I think some 'older' people think that they've already gone through so much in life, so they deserve the priviledge not to learn anymore.
And face it, if you're just trying to catch up with technology, then there is quite a lot of proper learning to be had. Thus making the gap of their way-of-lide and technology a little wider. Thanks.

Really I think that you can not live right without technology. Technology is like the future if you can't keep up with it then just live without. I personally can not live without it. I use technology everyday. I use it with out noticing because it became a normal thing. Sometimes we take technology for granted and we think it is going to be there always. If aliens took over and destroyed all of our technology, and we had to live like the first evolution, then I bet half of us would go crazy. We would all realize that technology is our everyday life. Like it or not. So technology is a big thing about are daily life.
