Driving on ice freaks me out!

About a month ago, me and my friend got caught in an ice storm. Freezing rain came down, and laid down a nice, slick 1/10 of an inch of pure ice. It doesn't sound like a lot, but boy it was bad! We had just gone gambling and were leaving and I could barely stop, barely control my car, barely stop myself from hitting the brand new Beamers and Altima's struggling in the lanes next to me to get up hills. Tires were spinnning, cars in ditches, brakes clicking. It was a disaster. We were 20 miles from home, it was midnight, we didn't really have all that much money or gas.. It took us an hour to get 4 miles and was the scariest driving experience I had ever had in my life. Now I am pretty much afraid to drive over and in ice. I heard on the radio that THAT night, over 370 accidents happened in my city. Plows, Emergency vehicles, cops, were all sliding around and going into ditches. Anyway, I had a panic attack and me and my friend pooled together our money and stopped at a hotel, and waited for the ice to melt the next day before we left, which was ultimately the smartest thing to do at the time.
This year has definitely been kind of a crazy year for weather, at least the winter. After the crazy ice storm that I got stuck in, we also were just hit, a couple of weeks ago, with a snow storm that merited 18" inches of snow and was a total **** to drive in! That experience took me 2 hours to get home, after about 5 times of getting stuck.
Now, I am hearing that there will be freezing drizzle and rain tonight. I've developed a fear of driving in this after almost crashing/dying and having a panic attack the last time I tried to drive home on ice. There is no traction, no control..And so it freaks me out. I hate ice. I can't wait for winter to be over just for this reason. I am hoping that my anticipation for this freezing storm is going to be worse than the actual 'storm'/ice.
Are you getting freezing rain there?

I once did three 360 degree circles when I lost control of my car on my own street in Colorado. When I finally came to a stop, I was just inches from plowing my own mailbox. I was almost home, and I was nearly killed before I could even get to the driveway. What a day that was! Good luck getting through the rest of this winter. Just remember that all of this snow is due to global warming! Ha Ha

that is really scary... we don't have freezing rain here... and we don't have snow in here... the lowest temperature we have here is 0 degree during winter... i'm glad that you and your boyfriend are alright and nothing serious happen to you... 370 accidents in one day are really scary... take care and have a nice day...

A freezing ice storm after dark sounds like a nightmare experience. It sounds as hard to drive in as stick fog. It is totally understandable that you have developed the fear of driving on ice. In my locality the snow and ice has now gone thankfully. Temperatures today were 7 and 8 compared to minus 2 or minus 3 which we had last week. I didn't drive on the snow and ice because I am not yet a very experienced driver. I passed my practical driving test 10 months ago. I went out with my mom in her car on the ice and we had a very scary experience. Going along the road on the left side of the road a lorry was parked on the right side of the road. A car rushed past in the opposite direction causing my mom's car and the car behind to almost slip off the road. There was a slip and then a bang. The car behind bumped into my mom's car lights. One of her back of the car lights got smashed. It was the fault of the driver that sped away with a fast speed. It was impossible to record the registration number of that car that soon. We didn't feel like the driver of the car that bumped us had any blame. We both felt really shocked and shaky after than happened. I am driving around again now no ice or snow are around anymore.

Different weather causes diffrerent driving conditions on the roads. There is only so much you can do when it comes to ice. There is no control no matter what kind of vehicle you many drive. When the freezing rain hits, it fools us into thinking that it is something we can control because it is something we can see. We are thrown off balance and yet we can stilll act surprised by it. We need to take caution in all weather but ice can more damage in more ways than one.

I think there'll be freezing rain again tonight, and a little snow, but no serious dumping yer.
I also hate driving in snow or black ice. I don't have a memorable experience like yours but a have fish-tailed a few times. And with those few times is enough for me to hate driving in this weather too!

I remember when I lived in colder climates during college. I had to drive to school, and in winters I would get really freaked out sometimes. Freezing rain was really bad. In the snow, there were times I would end up driving at like 15 miles an hour. Stay safe!

I am living in a tropical country so it's impossible for a snow available here. Unless, of course, if the global warming cause this earth changing fast. But we all never wishing of it of course. When i was a child, i watch on the television program about subtropical and cold area weather. It looks very soft and gentle to see many ice around you. You can see all white around you. I thought that is an interesting thing because we won't feel hot (since i'm in tropical country, a cold season is something we all wanted to feel even though only for once). But when i grew up older, i finally understood that snow can also be a terrible thing for human society. I just wish there's no more weather problems around us and let's go green from now on for keep our world safe and friendly with us. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

I am here sitting in my room but I can imagine the situation you were in. I remember a movie where the couple gets under the snow and their car is below the snow so they decide to do nothing but sleep there for the night. It is a bollywood movie. I think you can't do much when there is thins kind of snow storm. Today it is very cold here.
I guess it will be snowfall here if the rain keeps its way from heaven to earth like this. The surrounding mountains are already white. I wish such kind of thing never happen with me. I love snow but i don't like to get caught in it with my vehicle.
