Well, it's been a tradition for us Pinoys to collect and have round fruits on the New years table(12 0r 13) for good luck, how many of you do this? I'm Christian so we do not really practice this although we sort of make fun and try to complete the number and we always fail. Practice this? What 13 fruits can you think of ( not a poll question)that you always have and what are your thoughts regarding the tradition.

Hello! I am also a resident of the Philippines, and right now, I just came from the market to buy my fruits. Every year, im just like that, I always complete all my 12 or 13 fruits so that our table will look so bountiful with the presence of the fruits. Yes, its a tradition and I intend to keep it whether it brings luck or not, the mere sight of seeing those fruits on our table makes our togetherness during the Medya noche complete. Aside from that, I also ensure that our cupboards was complete with the supplies of salt, sugar, everything so it could make me feel bountiful for now and the next year to come. HAppy New Year to All!!!!

Yes Brother, my family does it not for luck but it is just so nice to look at the New Year table with so much bounty. Aesthetic or therapeutic I'm not sure what to call it, but the site and smell just makes me feel good, and looking at the fruits make me remember God to thank him for all his blessings this past year and to thank him in advance for this coming year.Happy New Year.

We used to do this at home. But for 8 years now that we have been spending our Christmas and New year with my in-laws we do not prepare this tradition personally. I think my in-laws prepare some fruits but I'm not so sure yet if they complete the 12-13 fruits. Not totally round because they have bananas and mangoes as well. In our case before, we had apples, star apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, pineapples etc. My mom would still buy some fruits but not too many anymore because nobody would eat it after.
Happy New Year everybody!

hi louievill I am from the Us and had not heard of this interesting
tradition. sounds yummy as I am a fruit lover. As you are in a tropical
area there you must be able to easily find 12 or 13 round fruits for New Years. We do not have this tradition but I c an name some fruits we have available in the U.S.. lemons, grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, nectarines, kumquats, loquots, grapes, manderin oranges, peaches, pears, apr icots, papayas, water melons, plums, blackberries, blueberries, boysen berries, cherries so we do have fruits in our markets too. Oh my left out apples. So I came up with more than 13. lol l ol

I think this tradition came from the chinese, especially the feng shui. Some or most pinoys follow this, because of their belief to collect round fruits brings luck in the coming year. But, even though you're doing this, if you're lazy nothing will happen to you. My family before follow this chinese tradition of collecting round fruits, but there's no luck at all. The best thing is to be industrious in the coming new year and always GOD'S first.

Good point, there's no substitute to what you mentioned, but sometimes hard working people still need a good break to prosper, maybe that's why they resort to luck and feng shui, like the Chinese in our country, they are very hard working and at the same time superstitious and we must all admit that most of them are so damn wealthy.

I used to practice this tradition before, but when I became a Christian, we just lift everything to God. Last Christmas we celebrated it just like a birthday party of one of the family members. We bought a birthday cake with Happy Birthday Jesus written on it, we had ice cream and spaghetti, hotdog with marsh mallows for the kids and we sang Happy Birthday at 12 midnight. It's nothing fancy, just a birthday celebration of our most beloved creator and for that we have to be thankful for.

That's very true sister cause we Christians do not really believe in luck although sometimes we say good luck, what we believe in is being blessed by the lord so we also say God bless, and I'm very sure you will be blessed because you make him center of your life and a member of the family.

I've never heard of this before, but it sounds fun! I can think of grapefruit, apples, oranges, tangerines, pomegranits...how's that? I am going to make black eye peas for new years. I don't have a silver dollar to put in it though!

Good enough friend, just don't know if Filipinos or Filipino communities in the U.S. still practice that tradition.

And I think it should also be round, so hard to think of 13 round fruits especially some would be off season this December, yeah you also have to set aside a budget cause prices go up. imagine millions of Filipinos looking for round fruits to become lucky, , Good luck and happy New Year

I rarely complete all 12 or 13 rounded fruits on new year's eve. I'm not even sure if I'm supposed to count by kind or total number of fruits. But I still buy fruits to fill up a whole basket (looks good on pictures and very healthy to eat after stuffing our tummies with too much sweets and fats!)

We are also like that, come to think of it we should already be thankful and consider our self lucky just to have food or fruits on the table when there are so many starving people all around us, thank you very much for your nice answer

In my culture we frequently hand out 12 grapes to all attending the celebration. At the strike of midnight we are all to eat all grapes as this will bring us 12 full months of luck.
Not many today still do this here, some do and I am guilty of skipping it from year to year, maybe I will remember this New Years Eve. LOL

Oh that's more practical and easier to do LOL, just buy grapes and eat it, but we Filipinos have to collect 12 or 13 different kinds and put it on the table before the stroke of midnight

My mother is a devout Christian but she does this practice like clockwork during the New Year. She also not misses on the rice, the kalamay, the salt and other psedo-offerings during the New Year. In my opinion, these are traditions and traditions never hurt anyone or someone or even a person's faith. The only thing that matters is that the New Year will be better than the last - something that a religious institution like Christianity have a common thread with. I guess that this tradition is an old habit and old habit die really hard. Doesn't matter as long as you believe.
