Wow! It makes sense that those that live in Hawaii and are natives of the state have shorter life spans than other states. The Hawaiian Islands are the biggest consumers of this little product. They actually eat it as a delicacy (spam? who knew??) They consume more than 4 million cans per year! I never did see the limited addition of the hormell can in 2003, because I do not eat much if any spam at all. Funny the things you learn when you do the research.

I have been to Hawaii and seen it on the menus...I wouldn't exactly say that their life span is shorter because they eat it....it's proven that people in hotter temp areas don't live as long as people in the cooler climates..that might have something to do with it.....also their cockroaches are enormous and they carry diseases...yuck!

How does over processed several compacted meats in a can become a delicacy? When we were kids my mom would make fried spam sandwiches and there was no choice about it, if she made it we had to eat it. I think she was the only one in the family that really enjoyed it. I don't think I've bought a single can in my entire adult life. Guess I got enough as a child to last a life time!

Wow! At least now we know why their life expectancy is so short! I grew up on that stuff! It was great fried and then throw some onoin on a sandwich with it! That Was some good stuff - but now that I know it's not healthy I wouldn't even buy any! But it was good back then! Who know Hawaiians would love the stuff?!?

Oh yah. They eat Spam Musubi (rice balls with a piece of Spam in the middle). It might sound weird, but it's actually tasty! I'm sure there are other recipes with Spam in it that they eat - but that's the common one . . . my friend from Hawaii and I had a conversation about that. I'm Japanese, and though it's not a Japanese thing as far as I know, my mom used to heat it up for us for dinner, with rice. Oh and I think some people stick it in their fried rice. They're sort of a tasty, salty meat product! I don't use it in our household for our family . . . I know it's not healthy. Do Hawaiians really have shorter life spans? The ones I know live a pretty long time - but maybe they weren't Spam conniseurs - hee hee.

lol...I read, they add it to soups, and stews too! Yes, they have the shortest life span of all the individuals in the states. Thank you for responding.

I've never liked spam very much, it's alright once in a while I guess. I had no idea it was so popular in Hawaii, I've visited Hawaii a few times and didn't see a lot of it, but I guess I wasn't paying enough attention. I can't imagine that's the main reason for the shorter life spans. I think part of it is the beautiful weather and the laid back lifestyle. Well maybe it's better to live a shorter, happier life anyways :)

Yeah, I just can't imagine eating that much spam. I maybe eat one can a year and that's pushing it. You are probably right, that the laid back lifestyles have a lot to do with their shorter lifespans. Hey, I wonder if we could ask Barack if he likes spam...lol Thank you for your response.

Just because two facts co exist does not mean they are cause and effect, and I know that you agree, I have read the other posts and I saw that. They just happen to like SPAM, and have short lives. It is amazing that in such a paradise they would want to eat something so "gross". I say this with two cans sitting in my cupboard. Hubby likes it, but only once in awhile. If I lived in Hawaii I would live on fresh seafood and fruits and veggies. When you think about it though, we eat a lot of things that are less than optimally healthy. It seems all societies have one or two kinds of sausages and other meats laced with preservatives and fats. I have a hard time getting hubby to not want to feed me preserved meats all the time. Sausage, hot dogs, lunchmeat, ham, and bacon. Spam and treet and vienna sausages.

lol..Yes, it is a lot of spam. I just bought the turkey spam for the first time last month. I think I might buy it a little more often, as my Mom seems to like it. I am not sure on the sodium content though.

hi buggles!
they have a shorter life span because of that food??i think that can be a reason.our life styles, the way we eat and kind of foods we consumed can lead and affect our lives.whatever the reason is if we consume food more than we should then it will not just affect our health but lifespan??maybe~so the lesson i learned is do eat our foods in moderate quantity.

Yes, I believe they did use a similar product during WW11. We never had it much when I was a kid. I know my Dad enjoyed it once in awhile..he also liked those Vienna sausages. Thank you for responding.

I think all the Allies during WWII had a fairly rich diet of spam. My father (he didn't go to the War), had bouts of spam eating. My mother had very bad hip and back problems, and every so often she had to travel to Melbourne (the capital city in Victoria, Australia), some 300 miles away, to have operations. While we were away, father, who was useless in the kitchen (he could barely boil water), would make himself spam sandwiches or eat spam straight out of the can. By the time mother arrived home he had galloping indigestion and constipation. I've tasted spam myself, and could never take to it. Poor old war veterans are probably still suffering from the ill-effects of that stuff - nearly as bad for them as the war itsef!
