ok i am not the best speller out there at all really. has gone better since i started going online but still not the best. many times i find myself writing something but then have to re-word it cos i cant spell the word i want. if i am by a computer i do the normal thing go on yahoo type in how i think its spelt and yahoo sometimes comes back with what it thinks i am looking and sometimes yahoo doesnt havnt a clue what i am trying to spell!
but there is many times we write down some words they just dont look right and you doubt your self over a silly little word cos the spelling just doesnt look right and even when you look it up and see that it is spelt like that still looks odd!
if your not so good at spelling what tricks do you use?
do you sometimes have brain block and just forget how to spell a simple word?
or do you write a word down and think the spelling just doesnt look right but really it is

I try to spell the word and hope for the best as i feel that way if i can not think of a word to replace it with, well perhaps other people would spell it the same as me.Other times i hope that noone notices, lol.I think that there are alot of people that are the same as me and do not worry that much, as there are alot of people that can not spell the same as us that are on here.

i hate that when you sit there for ages looking at a word and just thinking it doesnt look right at all. sometime i will even go on a thesaurus just to check the meaning and make sure it is right and everything. but it is hard when some words are spelt different anyways. like the word colour that is how we spell it over here in england but in the states its spelt color. and i know there are others so that never really helps!

I usually have trouble with words that have 'ei' or 'ie' in them, and I get very confused myself. When I do reread them, if I am sceptical about my spelling, then I would rewrite the word with the alternate spelling on a rough paper, compare the two, and work from there on.
Unfortunately, its not an easy thing to work through, but drilling the correct spellings is what I had to do. My teachers used to tell me the same thing when in high school, and I found that only if I worked at it under pressure situations (mock exams, timed sessions etc), did I see significant results. Hope this helps Ren1982 :)

Hi 3Honor, yes I was told that, but under exam conditions, even the most hard-learnt rules can become mixed up. You do make a valid point though.

@ Hit man, I have the same problem, sometimes I confuse with the word "received". I get confused with the two letters after the letter "c". I just wonder how we have the same problem?

You wouldn't be "normal" if you didn't have trouble with the "ie" vs. "ei". Everyone has that problem! "I before e except after c...then it is "ei"" is the clue to remember.

i consider myself a good speller because i hardly make any mistake in spelling and i know how to spell most of the words in english... sometimes i am a bit confused with US and UK spelling because they have a bit of difference... but other than that, i am fine... take care and have a nice day...

I haven't ever really had problems with spelling and when I do write articles online I always run a spell check on them. I find that spelling is a fairly easy subject to learn although they are tricky at times. There are spelling rules, but I do not know a lot of them.

I'm pretty good at spelling, but since texting has come so popular and I have had to grudgingly participate (I hate texting!) I find that I type the short and abbreviated words instead of the right word! When I text my grand daughter I make sure I type out the word and not use the abbreviation so she see properly spelled words. My daughter, in the police force, is a texting queen and she admitted that there have been times that she has had to redo a report as she re-read it when finished and saw how many words she had "texting style" abbreviated! Bad enough they all talk like that now (OMG!) but to have to start writing...give me a break!

lol i have a 12 year old daughter and when i talk with her online or by txt i always try and make a point on spelling out the whole word. cos i didnt want her to get into texting/writing like that. but it didnt work! there is some many times i have to call her up and tell her i am not her 12 year old friend and i dont talk like that so i dont under when you just write the 1st letter of the word you want. i say i am not a mind reader! so i think now a days once the kids start talkin to each other they are all doing it! i understand some of it but not all most of the time i am sitting there trying to guess and then give up and call

Hello my friend actually I'm not also good in spelling that's why I never ever comments any wrong spelling here specially. I have done a long way if my word does not know the exact spelling I go to microsoft word and wrote there but sometimes no idea also, so I re-word my sentence as you doing... Also sometime i have brain block never coming any word that suited in my idea - I don't know why... see you around

I think you are doing a good job. I also think that my vocabulary is getting better after I joined here. I have to participate in many discussions so it is giving me two benefits, one is that I am getting the knowledge and second is that I am improving my English everyday.I do not use any tricks I just type and then see that if the dictionary have detected any problem with my words, it is very simple.
