This happened to a friend and it amazed me of how much trouble this caused. The typo was the first line of the e-mail, she wrote Hello without the o and the person to whom it was addressed read it that way and thought she was cussing him, since the e-mail was an argument against information he had provided, the first word made sense to him and he was very insulted. Now we can have a whole conversation about our minds and whether or not we ever truly make mistakes, but my point here is how
badly a simple mistake can back fire. Has this happened to you? It happened to me last week, but thank goodness my typo just made a silly statement not and insulting one.

That is such an easy typo to make. I know that I've made mistakes like that before and the vast majority of my typos are times that I will get ahead of myself and drop a letter. In fact, I've caught myself doing it several times so far in just typing this one response.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that we never make mistakes because I really do feel like there are times that we make inadvertant mistakes, especially when we are expressing ourselves through typing.

I don't remember a typo that caused me troubles, but I remember how my colleague reacted to a simple mistake.I wrote this on SMS:"I need you help!" instead of "I need your help!".And he kept singing Beatles song I need you, which was from their album Help.I It was so annoying.

lol this has happened to me on many occasions. it's never amounted to anything serious but there was an incident a few months ago while I was emailing my school counselor. I had withdrawn from school for the semester but had intentions to return the following school year. I emailed my counselor to ask if there was any way I could return earlier than normal and she told me (in quite a rude manner if I might add) that there was no way I could return due to perquisite classes I still needed to take. While I was typing my reply, I accidentally pressed enter and sent the email without finishing. I was horrified because I pressed enter right when I typed "I wanted you to hel" and I originally meant to say "I wanted you to help me". I quickly sent another email apologizing for the mistake and luckily she didn't take any offense to it.

I often use the word 'You' in most of my discussions and responses to make the flow of my sentences smooth and for easier reading. But somehow someone misconstrued the meaning and took it differently. I was shocked when I got a pm asking whether the 'you' was referring to her in my response. Of course I was not referring to her in particular but was meant to be a general reference. It is always not possible to be perfect online as we bound to make typo or grammatical mistakes. Let us have a little understanding on the little mistakes that we read online. It is just unavoidable.

Before the internet, typos weren't that common--if you knew how to type, you probably had the education to know how to spell. Email and the internet changed all that! People aren't as careful because we feel almost as if we are speaking with that person or handing them a note across the aisle!
I overlook typos now. If I see "hell" in the subject line, I assume it means "hello". I have seen other typos that look strange or seem to be offensive but I always compensate for them automatically. It's a shame people either don't bother to proofread or don't have the skills to correct their mistakes. Most don't care.
I hope your friend got it all straightened out and will be more careful next time--also that the recipient will be more open minded!

I can totally understand how a typo could cause a miscommunication online or even via text. I feel like this has probably happened to me, but we quickly got it figured out afterwards. I can't think of a specific example but still. Even a dumb mistake I made the other day caused me to overdraft in my bank account - I was down to $40 in my account and went to the ATM to take $20 out - when I accidentally pushed the wrong button and came out with $80. It let me take it out but then when I checked online I had this huge fee for overdrafting. Hmmm. Oh well.

That happened to me once but it only caused me a little. It was a report. I rushed mine so it had, i think, two typos and 4 points were deducted from my total. Your friend though is unfortunate. She should've been more careful about what she's typing. She should've read what she had typed before submitting it. And of all the words to mis-type, why "hell"? Lol
