Hello, I Forgot My Wallet! Can You Help?

Hi,
I got a call from one of my friends at about lunch time here is a snippet of the discussion -
me: hi X how are ya?
X: Hi, I am in a mess. I invited my client over for lunch and here we are at the restaurant....
me: so you should be busy with the client. Why the call?
X: dear, we finished the lunch and it is time to pay the bills and... guess what... I just realized I forgot my wallet......
Ok, I did what I should have. But the point is such embarrassing situations can happen with anyone. Have happened with me too once while using a cab in a new place and it was more scaring as I knew no one there.
The question is how do you handle such a situation. You are using a service and it is time to pay for that... you reach out for your wallet or card or anything applicable and find - it is not there.
How and what are your feelings/experiences during the realization of your forgetfulness and the time when the bills are right in front for payment.

Your responses would be appreciated.
Cheers,
theSids

hello friend,
Funny but it's true..it happens in real life.
It never happens to me in a restaurant, but happens to me one time when i'm done with my groceries.
I have to pay with it just to realized my money is not enough because i forgot my wallet.
It's closing time,so i don't have time to go home to get my wallet.
I asked the cashier to asks the store manager if i can pawn my wrist watch (we are at the mall grocery)
I was so desperate that time because it's closing time and i don't have much to get the groceries until tomorrow.
The store manager came in and asks how far i lived from the mall (it's just 10mins drive anyway)
So,i phone in my daughter to have my wallet ready and asks my son (who is with me that time) to drive home and have my wallet.
Whew..such thing happen... (ugh..i hate it...)
Now i always check my wallet every time i go out of the house for groceries or when i went out for shopping.
As for your friend..how did he managed to pay the bills then?
There is always a joke here in our place..." wash the dishes to pay the bills "
Have a good day dear

Hi Jaiho,
Yes such situations are embarrassing and we are lucky to have sweet people around us) who are there to hep out in such dire situations. You had your kids to help you out and for this friend of mine - luckily I was here.
As I mentioned he was at a restaurant on a business meet and it is a costly one. It was lunch time here and it was non-functioning hours for the banks too. Luckily my ATM card came useful and I could reach there to help him out in time.
And yes, we too have the joke "Wash dishes to pay the bills" but I doubt it would have been a joke for any one in the shoes.

I work in a shop and it happens quite often, I put everything through on the tills and when it comes to paying the customer has forget their card. In this case, we just put the items behind the till with the customers name on until they return with the cash,
However, in a restaurant you have already eaten the food. I have been in similar situation to this at the hairdressers. I had my hair cut and was ready to pay when the staff told me the card machine was down (I only had my card on me, no cash) so since I could hardly leave to get money out of the cash point without taking my new haircut with me, I left my driving license as a guarantee that I would be back.

Driving without a license here in the UK is not advised, however if you have a valid driving license and just do not have it on your person (possibly because you had to send it away for the house address on it to be updated) then they can search it on a system, but this is more hassle than it is worth.
The time I left my driving license, the cash point was within the same building, The hairdressers was in a market place and there was a cash point at the other side of the market place.

hi Elixiress,
Yes, the security thing works with some shops or businesses but here in India, they would prefer something electronic as we are yet to have the Cards, and the Driving License is good if the ATM or the bank is a walk away because in my city, with driving without a Driving License is inviting more trouble

The older you get in life the more this will happen! I remember once I was in the grocery store and I did not realize I was out of checks until I went to pay for the groceries. For me, they knew me and told me to take them and come back and pay for them. I was shocked that they would do that, but I always shop there. I did it in our small town too at the little store and she told me to go home and get my check book (we use to have a charge account there so it upset me that she wouldn't let me charge!) and I told her if I had to do that then I would just go home and go into the next town....she decdided I could charge them! But this was many years back.
After being in a car wreck about 12 years ago I no longer carry checkbooks or a purse, I only carry a credit card and my license so this will not happen again! WRONG! Last month I went in the store to pay off my credit card...I had my license, card and bill...I forgot to bring a check! I called my daughter, she was next door shopping, and she came over and paid my bill for me, then when I got home I wrote her a check.
No matter our intentions these things will happen. Once we were in the zoo and my daughter had ordered her food, and the kids food that she was babysitting for, and realized she had 'lost' her money! As I said I always carry a credit card now so I paid for it. She later found it, it was in a different section of her purse and she paid me back.

Hi Christmas,
Yes, you are right. Old age has some demerits esp the forgetting. But the plus is that you start getting more of trust and respect and people do consider the age factor in such matters.
Again, when you are a regular customer that too counts and helps at times.

Hi lxffly,
See you already got so many ideas on this discussion - let me sum up for you - maybe anyone in such a situation can find them of use -
a. Call up a friend/relative nearby and they would be around to help
b. Tell them (the people at the restaurant that) you lost your wallet
c. Offer washing dishes to make up (this is weird but a way to say that your intentions were right just a bad occurrence of incidents)
...
And maybe more lets read out the discussion so far and find out

Hi sweetie.
Well, i never use a wallet.
Stupid things as they tend to hide from you.
I always make sure to have money in my pocket.
And no i don't wear dresses so i always have a pocket.
I think it happens to a lot, though.
Nothing wrong with it.
Just good to hear that their are still helpful people around.
TATA.

When you invite your client for lunch, it is your unwritten duty to confirm you have everything in person, including your wallet. When your client finds you in such a mess, how do you think he will go ahead with his assignment for you. It will merely prove your negligent and unequipped character.
Had you helped your friend immediately by meeting him and paying the bills, it was really a great gesture on your part. As we say To Err is human, so we do-To forget also is human.

Hi Tamijuddin
Yes, the business or the job can be at stake when such things happen. However it was just an accident and a chance that my friends forgot the wallet. Luckily the client was understanding and was almost ready and willing the pay the bills.
I did go and reach my friend to help and paid the bills.

Well I would be very embarrassed I have to be honest and I would give the Restaurant my Cell Phone Number and Address and I would tell that I will just go home and be back to make the Payment
As I always have to have Proof of my Address in my Handbag I can show it to them

When I worked in real estate, I asked the owner of my favorite restaurant to run a tab for me to be paid at the end of the month. He felt more comfortable with every two weeks, which was fine with me. It worked out because I never had to worry if I brought a credit card or enough cash with me.

That was 1998 or 9, i went to the book fair held on 70 kms away from my home town to buy some books. At the midst of the road someone pickpocket my wallet and i became helpless. Thanks that one my friends helped me by money to come back to my home. No book was bought.

I think that happened to me once, but in a cab. The good thing about it, I was able to ask the driver to drive me instead to a friend's house nearby, which I already called in advance. So I was able to pay for it with just a few minutes waiting time for the driver.
I can't say I've been in that kind of restaurant situation. And I have a silly habit of touching my wallet on my pocket constantly when I'm up and about.
But if that did happen to me, then I would do the same thing. I still wouldn't ask the client to pay. I will panick, and then insist that the client go first, and then call up a close friend to bail me out.

hi bounce,
I faced a similar situation with the cab and I was touring a new place at that time. I had just forgotten picking up the wallet and had already traveled a long distance. On the way I realized the wallet was not there. I remember that horrible time I had figuring out how to deal with the situation... I had no other option but to tell the driver about it and I can understand how you felt during that time...

I was a working lady. I had to travel 2+2 =4 hours up and down daily. I had to take 2+2= 4 buses up and down. for the first bus I had money in the side pocket of my hand bag. Now I have finished my first travel. I am waiting for the 2nd bus. No purse and no money. I was in the middle of the way. Very unknown place. To come home or to go to the work I need money. There we had private bus service only. they would not take us without money. That is an important day. Independent day. I should go to work to raise and respect the flag. Still it was dark. Early morning six o clock. At last I asked an unknown gentleman to give me money. He put his hand in his pocket and spread hand full coins in front of me. I took from his hand what ever I want. I had no chance to give back the money to him. I have never met him again. At school I had been scold by the principle for being late.
Unforgetable day.

Hi John,
I can understand the situation you refer to. It is somewhat ironic - A stranger whom you never met or knew helps you out on one hand and on the other, the principal who knows you fails to understand the point.
As you say - truly an unforgettable way to start the day.

Oh, that was generous of him then and I should also rectify what I responded to earlier - the principal was more concerned about the delay of the function (maybe some guest of honor had to wait) or he wants everything to go on as per schedule and timings.

I have forgotten to write one thing sids. To come back home also I needed money. I borrowed that money from the principal. But I gave it back to him.

Well as long as we are with someone who can pay such as a friend but if there is no one to pay or a unknown person in front of you, then it becomes really an ambarrasing situation. If it happens to me i think then i have to give my watch or something in place of money and tell them that i will bring the money in some time. Thats what i can do. Happy mylotting. Regards, harry.

Hi Akp,
Being with your family makes you feel so very safe and secure.
But yes, forgetting the wallet with a client is a messy situation. And this is what my friend did too... he called me up and I was there to help him. lucky for both of us - he got saved from embarrassment and I got a chance to help someone in a problem.

hello thesids,
Lucky it doesn't happen to me yet and i hope it will not, but i had an experience with a friend we are having a dinner and she need to pay the bills but when she looked at her pursue her wallet is not there i saw the worries and embarrassment on her face so what i did was i get the bill to her and simply slip the money inside of the receipt :).
If he/she is a good friend there is nothing wrong helping her/his but if you think he/she just fooling around then it's up to you if you like to help her/him.
There is also a case that a friend just suddenly remember you in case they need you sad but true :(.
have a nice day!

Hi bhabycatch
I wish that it happens to no one dear.
You are a great friend and you did the right thing. After all friendship is about standing by your friend when s/he is in need
Hey I have a better thinking that I can share with you here - I look at the closing lines of yours as - At least I am trustworthy that a friend who is in need could count on me expecting that I can help. (I know I may be the last one s/he called up but s/he did) and that makes my day.
Cheers,
theSids.

This is happened to me around twice in my life. I found myself once in a supermarket, reached into my pocket and... no wallet! They were really great about it... I had to all my full backs to the customer's desk and leave them there whilst I drove home to get my wallet. The next time I was in a restaurant. This time I had to leave my watch and my girffriend (who didn't have quite enough money on her either) in the restaurant whilst I drove home to get with my wallet. I wish I did have somebody to call to holp me out in the restaurant, but I don't think I would have done because it would have been a big ask. I always double check my pockets now before I go out.. Me and my wallet have become surgically attached! _Derek

Hello , The sids.
I will presume that you helped your friend there, huh.
Well, my husband is often in that scenario. He is a person who would often forget where he put his wallet or other plastics or worse, he could have been rubbed but he wasn't even aware of it until he reached out for his belongings.
If I were in that situation I'll be getting cold feet and hands. Of course, I can always call someone for assistance but the embarrassment is just too much. Plus here in my country, Philippines, some People can get really suspicious and nasty. They might think that I am just making an alibi and it was just another scheme. I can not blame them, because a lot of things like this happened for real.
I just hope and pray that this will never ever happen to me or any of my loved ones.

Hi eurekafemme,
Your presumptions are correct. I am thankful that I could help and stand by my friend at the hour of need.
Plus here in my country, Philippines, some People can get really suspicious and nasty - Let me share a secret with you - Here in India many are much more than those two... but the good are out there too (and I know at your place too you would have some great people)
I am with you in your prayers - "May no one face such moments ever".

There was one time that I forgot my wallet, which I somehow managed to discover the moment I met up with my friend instead of during the moment that I am about to pay for something. Luckily we wasn't on a spending date and she was kind enough to pay for my meals during that day (which I paid her the very next occasion I met her). Not only did I felt embarrassed, I was totally uneasy the whole day with a bag that does not contain my spending needs!
And since then, it becomes a habit for me to check for my wallet before I left home.

The lessons of life - the life teaches them as per its own whims and own justifications. Good that you had someone to help you out at the time of need and you learned your lesson well.
May it never happen to you or anyone anytime.

I usually leave my wallet in the car, so I always have it whereever I go. So when im getting out the car, before I get out, I turn off the car, and immediately reach for my wallet, before even thinking about opening the door. I sit in the car and go over a short checklist in my head. Hair done, got my wallet, got my phone, and then i get out. Hopefully this will never happen to me. However, the other day, I went to buy a lotto ticket, and i purposely left my wallet in the car, cause I didn't expect them to ID me, but they did. I'm 23, i don't think i look 17...... Just a lotto ticket.

i have never done this, but i still have time to do something like it. If this had of happened to me then i would do a similar thing to what your friend did really. I would quickly get on the phone and either phone a friend or a relative, explain what i had done and then asked them to come down to the restaurant and drop the money off for me to borrow, and save facr really. It is an embarrasing thing to happen really. Luckily i have the friends and family that would help me out if this was to happen. Luckily your friend had you to turn to. It just goes to show that we can forget the important things.

Hi Craigy,
Yes, we are all humans and prone to committing mistakes. We all stand a chance of facing such situations and it is the friends who can be the first or second preference to help us out.
I wish such a situation never happened to you or anyone
