Answering "Describe Yourself" is difficult for me.

I was asked several times during the interviews by the question :Describe Yourself. Actually it is not a question. It is somewhat a command. When I first was asked by this question, I would like to ask a question back but I think I should not because those were formal interviews. If only I could, I'll ask, "Describe how?", "Is it my physical appearance?", "My Manners?", "My Skills?", and much more. I was so confused. It gave me hard time answering it. I ended up saying everything about the categories I was about to ask. Like I'm shy, smart, creative, enthusiastic,....etc. I didn't know If I answered well. DO you also find it confusing?

I have also being stuck dumbfounded with that question even though it is a mandatory question at interviews. Basically, I really don't know the answer because the interviewer is not exactly specific and largely vague on what kind of response s/he expects from me. When answering, I try to be as objective as possible and put myself in a good light without outright lying. I know my capabilities and strengths as well as my weaknesses. at the end of the day, I hope that I answered the question in the best effort I could.

i agree with you... this question is very confusing as the answer can be very broad and we don't really know what the interviewer wants from us... but after going through interview for a few times, i learn to answer this question in relation with the role that i apply for... i just assume that they want to describe the qualities that i have that will suit the role and bring benefit to the company... also, i try to ask myself why they should choose me as the most suitable candidate for the role when giving the answer to this question... this helps me a lot to answer the question and hope this helps you too... take care and have a nice day...

Hi there, Blacksun. I gave it a thought once. Why they are asking such question? And when I was given the opportunity to be in the position of the interviewer instead of the interviewee, I found the answer. It doesn't really matter what you said. Employers do not really believe what you said, for them , it is expected that you will tell all the good stuff and if ever there's something negative or unfavorable that you will tell them, they know that it will not directly affect the position your are applying for. They just ask those questions for the sake of interviews and discussions. Because in their minds, they are saying "We'll see". They only want to hear you how you can articulate yourself and that is what matters most. Being able to express your thoughts clearly and comprehensibly. I, too, am confused when ask about such but since it isn't clear what they want from me and yes, it is not logical to ask what precisely they want to hear, so I am giving them this as my answer " I can easily adopt to any situation" and as always, the interviewer would shoot the exact questions that I wanted to hear, because he/she wanted me to elaborate.

We perceive who we are differently than other people do. it can be difficult to describe yourself without feeling conceited by it. I like people to tell me hat they think about me. i don't like to be the one to tell things about myself.

In my opinion this question used in interviews is completely stupid:how can I describe myself in a few words when we,as human beings, are so complex? And I'm sure people who go to interviews have to lie many times or at least not tell the entire truth about themselves because they will always try to point out the qualities they think that can help them get that job and try to ignore the others.I prefer to let other peolpe describe me,and only those who have known me for a longer time and who would really know should do that.

i think this is a question that many find difficult to answer as not many of us have a positive thing to say about ourselves, the question is answered by looking deeply at youself for instance you may think you are fun but that could be interpreted as daft, silly, dumb etc where is if you put, outgoing,it is seen as eager to participate, willingness, adventurous do you get what i mean its the words you use to descibe yourself that have the meaning interpreted by the asker do you agree?i hope this helps

Good Day! I also fin it hard answering that question because like what you've said, I want to ask how, my appearance, attitude or what? I'm also confused but whenever I'm asked with that question, I always say all my qualities, skills and attitudes.

No, it is a rhetorical question, you might just have to answer it with whatever you think of to take advantage of showing off yourself. Describe yourself, competitive, enthusiastic, willing to learn, and you always want to do everything the best you can. It is a job interview, and let them know how much you are willing to do a good job.

yah.. the question "Describe Yourself?" is a very simple question and yet.. so difficult to answer... in slum books.. i answer in this question.. "tall, dark, and handsome," but in job or school interviews.. i make a short view of myself w/ the interviewee.. :)

It seems you're not a conceited person, you find it hard to brag about yourself, tell people how good are you,to tell them you can do that and this. Well, just think you're not being ask just because they will like you, but for them to know something about you and that you're the kind of person who can deliver the things they want for them!

Describe yourself on interviews, simply means, you have to tell them what are your overall personality - optimist, pessimist. In addition, you have to tell them what are your strong and weak points, how do you get along in an office. Those are questions to more or less give the interviewee a bird's eye view of what kind of a person are you.

Yes, I know the question, and I don't like it. I think it's lazy on the part of the interviewer not to be specific. It's bad interviewing on his part, but it's you who suffers the consequences if you don't answer according to his/her expectations. I think a good interviewer should always ask clear and specific questions.
