Hello friends, soon i watched very interesting serial and when the man and the woman were calculating their expenses, they understood that they have lost so much that they don't have money for food. That's why they did a list with what they have at home and the final result was that they have food for 3 months or so. I was really impressed and reminded myself the old nice months when i could buy food for at lest 15 days, having my own schedule for cooking. It was very nice and i was calm that even if we don't have money, we won't stay hungry. Today i bought products for cooking for 5-6 days and i'm wondering for how long you keep food in your fridges and kitchens? Please, friends, don't get me wrong, i don't mean prepared food, but products for cooking. I was thinking really hard how to write that discussion. I don't want it to be written as a poll or something like that, which is against the rules of mylot. And now i hope it will be taken in it's right way.

hi Suggar when I was still in our apartment I would shop by the new with my favorite grocery store and they would deliver it to my apartment as I am physically handicapped. I would plan on a week or ten days supplies.' This wor ked for me as I had only my social security check so had to really budget. when I was still working I would keep a lot of stuff on hand but also I ate out often as I had both social security and my paycheck every two weeks. Now I do not have to grocery shop although I keep a stash of food in my room as I am a diabetic and as such often go low or else have to skip half of l unch as its not fit for a diabetic.I am for now living in a retirement center.

Oh, Hatley, i'm sorry for your illness. I have a cousin who had so serious problems with one of her kidneys as child, that she was not allowed to eat anything. My uncle was ship man and all she was allowed to eat or drink were herbal teas and honey. I remember when we were together guests on our grannies i could eat, but we had to hide food from her, she was still little girl and it was awful. Having food for at least 10 days is making me calm for sure. If i know that i expect some money to come soon, i feel free to spend, because i know that i'll be able to buy food soon again.

@ Hately... surely they know you are diabetic and should prepare food that you can eat. I thought all retirement centers provided special diets to fit the needs of each resident. I don't blame you for keeping food stashed in your room. You need to be able to have what you need, whenever you need it. I am also diabetic and I know I eat a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. I sure think they should provide that for you.

Hi, Suggar. I try to keep enough food on hand for at least a month. It's usually not exactly the things I would like to have but it is enough to survive. I'm on a fixed income and get paid once a month. My daughter gets paid weekly. We usually try to do our main shopping for food once a month when I get my money. Then through the month, week to week, we will purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, maybe some extra meats. It's not possible to buy enough fresh fruits and vegetables at the begining of the month to last that long without going bad. At the first of the month we purchase more shelf stable items, canned foods and basics like flour, rice, and sugar. We have never gone hungry and don't expect to. We just have to settle for a more sparse diet toward the end of the month. It always helps to have a meal plan to go by. Plan out what you will need for the month and stick to your plan. But it is smart to plan for special treats and snacks. If you don't ever get to have treats or snacks you will eat more just trying to find what you are craving. Our treats are often the fresh fruits, but sometimes it's chocolate. Mmmmm, chocolate, can't go all month without it ;)

Hello hun, thanks for that great and supportive words, because i know what are you talking about. I was able to do that time ago, when i could spend something like 50$ or little more for whole month of planned meals, but right now our earnings are not stable. Me and my boyfriend work online and we have no stable salary or like that, we just do what we have to do, when we have to do and that's when our earnings come soon. Sometimes i freeze vegetables as carrots or mushrooms and that helps a lot if i want to make sauce with the mushrooms or carrots help for my daily cooking. Some meat i try to have all the time, even if it's something like mince. Thanks a lot.

It gets harder every day to plan and then actually afford to buy what we need. The price of food is climbing every day. We all have to make adjustments. I try to make sure that nothing is going to waste. I also freeze a lot of our leftovers (what the dogs don't get to have) and they help stretch the food budget. It's nothing new, people do it every day, all over the world. We just have to change with the times. In hard times we pull up our boot straps and make do with what we have. Thanks for the BR :)

usually i buy food that will last me and my hubby for a week... i never buy anymore than that because i am afraid that the food will turn bad and i will be wasting my money... i'm not working at the moment and my hubby is the sole income earner in the family... so i have to be really wise in using my money if we want to survive... take care and have a nice day...

I understand what you mean, Lingli, with the waste. A week is a good period.

The food in my fridge lasts about two weeks or so. Grocery shopping isn't something I like doing but if I try to buy too much then the food gets moldy or rots before I eat them. Maybe if I buy more dry and canned goods then I would have a food supply that lasts longer but I'm already bad at taking care of my health and probably need the fresh veggies and fruit to stay in good health.

I got dry food every time at home. It's easy because i can mix it with something i am able to afford at the moment.

Hi Suggar, So my friend is scared of getting a d-eleted post... aw c'mon, be a sport (I know you are) for us, we get our groceries and other stuff once a week unless I am cooking coz when I cook, I waste a lot(that was my wife's remarks each time I did something). The reason behind this is that there are just two of us and I am not allowed to drive out regularly but if I could, I would getting the fresh stuff on a daily basis... and guess what - it is winters here and the markets are flooded with fresh vegetables(just that they are too costly - thanks to food inflation) Cheers, theSids.

Scared is bit too strong explanation for my feelings around the discussion, but it can be taken as poll, because of the questions, who are universal and doesn't need too long explanation I can say same for my boyfriend, but not that he is waster of food when he cooks, but he is ways too slow than me and i just don't ask him to do something, because i know that i can make it much faster than him

For every kind of attitude buying food once or two times a week is good. Laziness or other reasons, that's how we won't stay hungry.

Hi Sugar, This is an interesting topic. I am always curious how people organize their food shopping. Everybody is so different. I have friends who go shopping almost every day and their cupboards, freezer and fridg are bulging with food. The thing is if you keep veggies and meat in your freezer for more than 6 months you may as well eat cardboard. The food is not bad by then but it looses its nutritional value very fast. Canned foods are tricky too. The inside of the cans is coated with a plastic solution which gradually leaches out into the food. so any cans more than a year old are not too appetizing. I have other friends who go shopping almost every day but their fridg is almost empty and their freezer is totally empty. They shop for what they will eat that day and the next and then go shopping again. Another friend who lives alone was in Europe during the last war and suffered from hunger and starvation as a child. She panics if she does not have a house full of food. She has two large fridges and a fair sized freezer. All are full. When I visit her I always prepare food at home and take it with me under the guise that she is getting on in age and I do not want to make work for her. The real reason though is that all the food that is served is so old I have lost my appetite. Some of her canned goods are 3 or 4 years old and she still eats them and prepares them for visitors. Myself I am on a fixed income and have to watch every dollar. I buy dry goods such as dried lentils, peas and beans at a bulk food store and store them in glass jars. I try to use them up within 3 to 6 months. I go to the grocery store maybe twice a week and buy what is on special as far as fruits and veggies are concerned. If apples are cheap I buy apples, if pears are reasonable it is pears. Sometimes it is oranges or fresh berries. All depends on the price. Same goes for fresh veggies. Sometimes it is broccoli, sometimes cauliflower or green beans. I don't use canned vegetables other than tomatoes, pasta sauce when it is on special (sometimes Ragu Sauce in glass jars is on sale for .99cents or $1.27 then I buy a few jars) For a treat I buy a can of black olives from time to time. I also buy frozen peas and corn. In the winter lettuce is a frightful price here in cold Canada, so I make cole slaw with cabbage carrots and apples. Cabbage is usually really cheap. Also around Christmas I buy the fresh baby spinach very reasonable and I make a spinach and orange salad to avoid paying the high price for lettuce. So you see how different people's habits are.

Hello Linda, i can understand completely your friend who lived in Europe and suffered from hunger during the war. I have never lived while it was war around, but around 1995 it was real hunger around. I remember that the communism was gone in our country, everything was messy, new democratic governments came and started to steal. I don't want to open topic for politic, but i just think that's the reason for all of us. It was time when everyone could make illegal money and most of the people were living really poor. My family too. It was hard years and i many things from my mom in this period. She was able to do miracles. Now they are o.k., but i remember they always had at the fridge cheese, yellow cheese and some salami. Nobody was greedy for that stuff, because all of us ate cooked food. My mother always had something at home - potatoes, rice, white beans, green beans and so on, so she had to buy only half of the products for the dish. Once she bought a bag a potatoes she could cook whatever she wanted with the potatoes and her daily expenses for food was not so big. That's how i stated to do too, when i have money, i buy more of something, like beans or potatoes and what i have to shop day by day is only bread and something included, if i have nothing more than potatoes at home.

It depends on how much grocery money I have to begin with as to how much food I have on hand or will buy. I've got 3 small kids and even at their young age they inhale everything right before my eyes. Dry or canned good usually last a month or so depends again how much the kids eat and how much of a stockpile I have of any one particular item. I stockpile when I do have money so we have something to fall back on.

Same with me, sometimes i dream to have more money so to be able to buy canned food and to close whole kitchen cabinet full with it.

I usually use up anything that has an experation day before it runs out.I usually buy in bulk because it's hard on me to go to the store & get them in the house. i usually don't go every week. I could go every day & spend big bucks so that's another reason i stay out of the grocery, lol. I have no willpower when it comes to buying groceries. I see too many good things to cook, lol.

I'm the same, AntiqueLady, when i go to the store so many stuff are teasing me from the shelf. And when i see all of that diversity i'll think about new dishes i can cook, so it will be so expensive that i won't be able to afford it. That's why today i bought few things for next days and i'll follow my plan.

Hello sweat Suggar :) I doubgt that this is against the rules, it has all the makings for a good quality discussion. I think the average we buy food to put in the fridge is 1 week, but there are items that can last there for months, like some bottle home made salads over the autumn that we can eat up to spring.

Yes, we can put everything in the freezer, here we can keep meat around few months until we cook the meat. I love it that way, it fits really well for people, who doesn't have stable earnings or salary.

Being that it is just my boyfriend and I at home we plan carefully. So we simultaneously look at what we have on hand before we head out to the grocery store. We buy enough for a about two weeks worth and by the end of the the two weeks we do come up short but are able to some how come up with something to eat by the end there as we improvise quite a bit. We both eat like birds so we come up with something. Let it be some rice alone and or anything quite simple. We are fortunate not to go to bed hungry ever, as we do our best to be conscious with our spending. Oh and by the way I use to make enough where as I had a full fridge and pantry all the time and can't tell you how much use to get wasted so we are never so poor that we cannot be conscious about what we have on hand.

We usually stock raw food materials such as meat good for 1 week only. The fish sometimes has to be just for 3 days, because i think fish is not that good to cook if it has been in the fridge for more than that. But as to those leafy vegetables, we only buy them, good for 5 days because they do wilt if stored in the fridge for long. As to other types of vegetables we stock them good for a week too. It's also one way of avoiding them getting spoiled once it storms and the electricity will be restored after a day or two.

i always buy food for a month when ever i have the money. and you are right it is better to go on and buy it when the money is there. i put my meat in the freezer and the cans in the cabnet. and then it is there whenever i am ready for it. it is nothing wrong with doing things like that. better safe then sorry.

I realized that i give much more money if i buy food every day, out of my cooking schedule. when it's planned, no snacks are included and it saves money.
