A simple choice...

Take one fast food cheeseburger. One portion of fries. Onion rings and a large milkshake. Or - take one portion of steamed fish. Five different types of steamed vegetables and a portion of cous cous or plain rice. One half pint of cold water to wash it down with. Be honest - if you had the choice and didn't have to cook them which would you choose? Does what you eat bother you?

It would depend of what type of fish, and what the five vegetables were. If they were varieties that I happened to like, then I would prefer that. The burger, fries, onion rings and shake can be had anytime. There are lots of fast food restaurants near us. Getting healthy food when dining out is a lot trickier...at least in our area. Wouldn't it be nice if the latter could taste like the former...and be as healthy?

Wouldn't it just. The fish tonight was mackerel. I don't eat at fast food places, haven't for years, but I do remember the allure of it. LOL.

I have long had a moral objection to the big name fast food companies - especially KFC. I love oily fish - salmon and trout. Tuna if it is caught ethically. Mackerel and sardines too. Try COleg if you like cod. Similar texture and taste but far cheaper and more plentiful.

I don't like fast food fish either. I do like fresh, mild-tasting fish. Cod, flounder, pollock. Not crazy about heavy-tasting, or oily types. Takes too much tarter sauce to cover the flavor, which defeats the purpose.

We bought a great microwave steamer from Lakeland Plastics that we can do the whole meal in one go. It was a tenner!

Years ago we bought a "proper" steamer, three tiers and electric. But it was such a palaver to use that it is now in the garage gathering dust.

Ten years ago I would have taken the cheeseburger meal. Now my tastes have changed due to some very stringent re-training of my taste buds in an effort to be healthier so I would take the fish--unless it was fishy tasting fish, then I would just eat the vegetables, starch and water! I've been eating healthy the past couple of years and although I enjoy a hamburger or junk food sometimes, my body doesn't feel so good when I finish. It's just not worth it most of the time.

Both of those choices contain too large of portions of food for me to eat. I have a smaller appetite. If I didn't have to cook them I would choose the cheeseburger and skip the fries and onion rings, and only drink part of the shake. The reason I would choose that option is because I don't much care for fish.

Neither thanks. No, it doesn't, I eat anything I fancy eating. As I'm quite a fussy eater it's normally old fashioned meat and two veg. followed by a banana and washed down with apple juice. As all the female members of my family have become diabetic in their 50s I'm making the most of eating what I fancy while I can.

I would really prefer the second meal. I would feel more full, and still probably consume fewer calories. I often feel that I am the only person in the US that does not like fries.Since the New Years I have been trying to increase the fruit and vegetables and eat less butter and cheese. I feel much better when I eat less fat and more vegetables. I like milkshakes, but a small one will do for me, thanks. If I eat out at a fast food or a buffet I just feel draggy the rest of the day.

I haven't eaten in a fast food restaurant in years. I don't regard the stuff that they sell as food and in some cases their animal welfare leaves a lot to be desired. However they are good places to fill your belly fast. I do love food though. Unfortunately I have consumed too much and am working on losing weight and hopefully stay alive. I am discovering new tastes and different ways of food preparation. It's quite exciting and not expensive.

I would choose the burger and onion rings. I don't like steamed foods, even though I know they're better for me. I can't eat fries much any more because they lay in my gut like hardening cement. If I get them covered in cheese sauce, they don't bother me so much because the proteins in the cheese change how the fries are processed, so I can get away with it once in a while. Likewise, the milkshake. It's something I can only do on occasion, but that amounts to maybe twice a year. I don't do fast food much anymore and find that I'll eat Taco Bell before I'll have burgers and fries. I can eat that without issue unlike the other fried and greasy foods - especially if they're high in carbs. That's not to say I don't like a really good juicy bacon cheeseburger at a steakhouse or pub rather than at a fast food place. But, without having a lot of money, those trips are more infrequent than they used to be. I'm better than I used to be in what I eat, but I'm far from eating the perfect diet.

The first meal would be totally Indigestible for me as my system can no Longer tolerate junk food at all. I haven't eaten those things in years as the whole lot would just sit there and then cause the most unpleasant effects on me. The Boss makes the best burgers though. I am intrigued that you say that cheesey chips as we call them process differently to plain fries - I wonder how that works. My diet is very much the steamed stuff now. It's amazing how easy it is to adjust when you have to. I have found that my taste buds are much more effective now too.

Pike- You know from my past discussions that hubby at 30 was diagnosed with high blood pressure to go along with his military disability. We had slowly been working on getting rid of the nasty eating out habits but after a recent wake up call (major weight gain after the holidays) we both got very seriously. We just went shopping today for the next three days until payday when we'll go out and do shopping for the next month, and picked up all healthy foods. We eliminated all the processed foods, sugars, and all carbs that aren't either from dairy or veggies. I have to say that today I have felt really good! We are very serious and have to be for health reasons. Good thing is that we're both young so if we get this going now we'll be set once retirement hits us and hopefully will be in good shape to enjoy it!! That said I'd go with the home cooked, though as I'm allergic to fish it wold have to be another meat. Today for lunch we had beef with a large Caesar salad, and broccoli. We had a healthy omelet for breakfast, cheese/tomato slices for a snack, and tonight we're having beef and cauliflower. Tomorrow we're doing stir fry, and the day after pork dishes. Not sure what we'll get for the weekend but something yummy I'm sure. We're doing an induction diet right now to purge the system of the icky things we were eating over the holidays so hence the limits on nuts, fruits, etc. In two weeks we'll be adding those back in once we've past the "cravings" stage. I forgot to answer part of your question! The answer is that when we do eat out I always end up in the bathroom for some time. It doesn't matter if it is a sit down place or fast food, it all has the same result. I was diagnosed as a teen with IBS but my mother never followed the diet so I never did eat properly and have this problem all my life. (Most of it at least). My goal now is to stay healthy so that I can manage my IBS and not have to live on meds every time I eat something.

Sorry to be difficult, but I would technically take neither of them. I would take the vegetables and cous cous or rice but I would leave the fish for you and I would drink at least a pint of room temperature water. The food that I consume does bother me as you know. I can really feel the difference in my body if I eat something remotely unhealthy these days. I never used to worry about these things and never really noticed any difference in my body if I ate different foods, until I was in my mid thirties and starting to pork on the weight. As we get older too, I think we realise that we cannot keep eating rubbish. If we do, then life will be short and painful towards the end.

I am slowly getting like you about food. I am almost entirely a fish, vegetable and fruit eater now. I do have a little chicken too, but no red meat (and I do like red meat!). I have noticed a difference and am happily discovering new foods. Quinoa is the latest. I'm not sure that I prefer it to cous cous, but it is interesting and certainly better for me and I am thinking about sprouting some and seeing where I go from there. I also make a spread from avocado, dates and lemon juice. The recipe requires dulse as well, but thet's not so easy to buy here. But spread on an oatcake or crispbread it tastes so good. I've lost 31lbs (at the last weigh in) and have moved from being obese to overweight! I've never been so happy to say that I am overweight! LOL. I still have a medical problem and until that is identified I shall not feel properly well, but there is no doubt that I am looking and feeling better. Now all that I have to do is deal with the smug feeling that I get about living healthily!

I have all the kit to make my own sushi - which is a favourite snack and fine in moderation - but have yet to try. I have a day off tomorrow and weather depending I might have a go then. Don't add more than 5 chopped dates (to one avocado) to the avocado spread. It all gets a bit too sweet if you do.

Wow, that is great to hear about your weight loss. I could not relate to the 31lbs though so I just converted it online to kilograms which I understand. That equates to 14 kilograms which is pretty good to lose. I lost somewhere between that and 20 kilograms. I never weighed myself at my heaviest. I thought I was only about ten kilograms heavier than now, but my wife said it looked like about 20! Quinoa is great. I have only ever had it a few times as a pasta I think, but a lot of health advocates recommend it. That avocado spread sounds delicious. Avocados and dates are always found in our home. There are lots of properties around here that grow avocados so they can be found pretty cheap most times here. Dulse is great too. I have had it a few times, but I find it a bit salty and ocean like for me to consume much. (that's because it comes from the ocean...LOL) I was never a fan of sea food, so any plant that comes from the sea, I only like in moderation usually. We sell kelp noodles which are very popular but I do not like them much even though they have no flavour. I prefer our raw nori sheets which are great for making healthy wraps or sushi.

If I am honest, I honestly would choose the second one. Mostly because I don't like cheeseburgers! I do try hard to eat healthily. Well, I usually have healthy meals, my problem is the unhealthy snacking in between! I went to an exercise class yesterday and think I will keep it up. They give tips on healthy eating and stuff as well although these "plate" diagram things, I'm sure theykeep changing how much of each thing you're supposed to eat!

Honestly, if I had the choice and I'm not cooking, it would depend on my mood. Sometimes, I prefer the first option and most often the second(which is what we have most days). More than the healthy aspect, I seem to LOVE the healthy food:) Even before I had kids of my own, I preferred salads to pizza and cheese burger. That doesn't mean that I've never craved or had these....just that it was more of an indulgence once in a while than a daily affair. Even carbonated drinks...it would take me 3 days to finish one can/bottle (200ml) when I chose to have it. The only time I finished it at one meal would be when I was having junk food.

That's not totally true...there are lots of overweight Indians..lol. But in our state, the staple diet consists of brown rice and fish...both are healthier than the other options. One of the main reasons for obesity among Indians is mainly change in lifestyle. Most have jobs that do not involve physical activity. Earlier, people worked in the fields and lots of jobs in the home involved physical work. And the diet was based on that. Now we follow the same diet but the work has decreased and we don't exercise. A dietician's dream? That I certainly am ;)

I´d go for the steamed fish, though I don´t actually like fish so I´d feed that to the cat and stick with the veggies and rice. Even if I had to cook it myself. I´m not a food goodie goodie, but I just don´t like fast food very much. Oddly though, when I was vegetarian many years ago, the only meat product I craved was McDonalds hamburgers. Which is odd as they taste more like cardboard than meat. Once I started eating meat again the urge passed.

But this time, between the two, I will pick cheeseburger and fries. That's what my mouth looks for. I love fish and vegetables as well, maybe if I answer your discussion a few hours later and it falls on dinner time, I will pick the steamed fish, rice and veggies. It bothers me on what i eat to a small point as i know that most of the stuff is really bad for me. But i do enjoy food nd the junk food does taste so good. At the end of the day we live our lives the way we want to, we do not know when we are going to die and so aslong as we are happy then that is the main thing, yes some of the food i eat is unhealthy but i really do enjoy it, it tastes so good. I do also eat healthily but for taste i would rather have fast food really, also it is great that we aren't wasting time cooking as this is all prepared for us which isd a good thing. Maybe it is good to have a bit of both. But out of the options you gave, i would also choose to have the fast food option.
