To all my friends in Mylot I'm leaving for a trip early Tuesday morning. I'm flying from Puerto Rico to New Mexico to see my granddaughter and the birth of my grandson. I'm so excited. However, the time difference is three hours behind me. Another words when its 2:00pm here in PR its only 11:00am in NM. Does anyone have a good tips to be able to not suffer with it for two to three days. Thank you!

CONGRATULATIONS! so glad you will get to be there. I have never experienced any of this but I know what we did to adjust to working 3rd shift was to adjust our schedule now so you have time to get used to it. So, since it is 3 hours, starting now, back yourself up 3 hours! if supper is at 6 pm make it at 3pm, if bed time is 11pm for you make it 8pm and if your up time is 8am then get up 5am, by adjusting your time now, it will be much easier. The only problem I can see in this is the adjusting to climate changes. I agree with the other post you will be so excited and so much to do, but you don't want to be exhausted too. HAVE FUN!

Here we have some stores that are open 24 hours, but if you are getting up at 5 you could always clean house, take the shower, get dressed and breakfast, and be there at the time they open. The most important thing is in adjusting your routine to adjust backwards time. Maybe the hardest being the time you have supper and go to bed, so early, but once you get up at 5 you'll be ready for that bed at 8pm! Certainly, turning off the phone so no one can call and wake you up would be important. Lelin, glad you liked my suggestion! Hope it works for you!

Yeh i agree with you here this is a brilliant idea that i have not really thought about before i will have to try it out next time i fly. Also the only problem i guess is like you said shops and other places wont be open at 5am but you will adjust too it i think.I suppose you can also try moving back slowly so you do say a hour per day till you are normal and then tat would work fine. Remember the old saying slow and steady wins the race.

As soon as you get on the plane then set your watch to the correct time what it would be in Mexico. Do not nap on arrival and stay up and go to bed at what would be your normal time. You could take Melatonin if available and this would lessen jet lag. I hope that you have a wonderful visit. Your daughter will need her her Mom at this special time. I have not been on Mylot for about six weeks as my older sister was with me then pure family drama these past few days. enjoy your grandson. I hope that all goes well for your daughter. Blessings

Put your watch on three hours and go to bed when it is your usual time according to your watch. You will be in Mexican time. You will be fine the next day

Hi Lelin, I suggest that you take a walk round the airport before you board the plane. Most people just sit in the waiting room and wait for the call to board the plane. Then they sit in the plane all the way to their destination. That is why some people suffer from blood clotting. It is good to walk as much as possible, even on the journey. Three hours difference is not a big deal. Try to adjust to the timing in the new area. Even if you feel sleepy at 8 pm, because it is 11 pm at home, you should wait till 11 pm before you go to sleep. If you do not force yourself to keep awake the first night, you will never get over the jet lag for a week.

Sleeping is the whole problem for me. I will not be able to sleep the night before. In fact last night I already had a problem falling asleep because I have so much on my mind. I guess I will have to try and relax. Thank you so much for your response.

Three hours is not that bad. You should not feel it so badly. So dont worry too much and enjoy the birth of your grandson.

Thank you! I guess I won't worry about it since you and others think 3 hours is not so bad. I thought it would be a big problem with my inner clock.

Hmmm i donreally think it will cause a problem since it is only 3 hours it is the 18 hour ones from the uk and too the uk that get me if you do two of them in 2-3 days then you will have true jet lag and will need a few days off trust me lol.Although most of the time a good trip will take my mind off things and even better for you being with your new grandson trust me it will go so fast it will jsut be like a blur really.

my home country and the place i am living now also have a 3-4 hours time difference depending on the daylight savings... but i never have big problems with this time difference everytime i go back for holiday to my home country... for me, 3-4 hours is not that bad and i can still adapt to the time difference very well... take care and have a nice day...

When I went to South Africa the year before last there was a two hour time difference and it hardly bothered me at all. Last year I traveled to Vancouver and went back many time zones so I had jet lag. I suggest going to bed at your normal time which will have to be a likely time to go bed in Puerto Rica. Then you will be having a wonderful time seeing your granddaughter and grandson. On your flight I suggest you drink plenty of water. Have a wonderfully enjoyable trip.

Hi lenin, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip my friend and I'm sure the three hour difference won't effect you at all. I'm sure you are excited about seeing your granddaughter again and also being there for the birth of your grandson. Blessings.

Hi lelin! Congrats! I hope you have a safe and wonderful trip. When I went to California..I think the time difference was the same yime difference for me as it is going to be for you. Jet lag is a nasty thing but I found when I slept on the plane..it made it easier for me. As far as the time difference..there's not a lot I think we can do about that one. I was up at 3 in the morning there just ready to go..lol..that might help with the new baby though. Take care!

Thank you so much! Never thought of that with the baby at 2 or 3 am feeding. Then again by the time the baby comes I will be over the jetlag unless he decides to come early. I'm hoping and praying I can sleep on the plane. That is usually hard for me to do. Thanks again and have a great weekend.

Start doing things three hours earlier/later as necessary, if possible. When I visited New Mexico, I lived in IL (+2 hours of MST) and knew that I would have a lights out of 10pm, even though during the summer months, I was accustomed to staying up well into the night. So, before going, I began going to bed at midnight my time (10pm MST) and waking up when I would have to, according to MST. It helps a little to do this in advance, but your trip is very soon. Have a safe trip!

Thank you so much. Well I go to bed here in PR anywhere between midnight and 1 in the morning. I'm afraid I will be falling asleep at 8PM and up at 5am in New Mexico. I'm up at 7:45 in the morning here in PR.

Jet lags - avoid drinking soda when riding a plane to avoid jetlags
Keep on hydrated at all times. The further hydrated you are the better your body will be able to handle with Jetlags. Aim and stay away from pop or soda and try to drink only water.

There are three good strategies for correcting our internal clocks. First, get as much time as your can in the sun during the day. It will help keep you alert later into the day and reassure your brain that it is day time. Second, once the sun goes down be in a room filled with lights - especially bright warm lights, preferably incandescent. Third and most important to general health, go to bed at a time normal to your new location and sleep late - contrary to common belief - the late sleep will keep you up later and help you get quality sleep that first day.

I have read that most people who suffer jet lag do not properly hydrate themselves. Get a good night's sleep the day before and drink plenty of water, eat lightly and drink more water! I hope you have a wonderful visit with your family and that your new grandson is in perfect health and stays that way.

Yes :D and that just dosent meen alchol does it you have to drink properly i always find it really bad when i have a hang over and jet lag it is really annoying and you fell like you cant move anywhere lol. Trust me you dont want to try it i would say it is one of the worst things i have come accross with flying.

Wow, that should not hinder you so much, unless you are a very routine person.. I was expecting like 15 hour jet lag which I've experienced before.. and I cured it by staying out all day.

I have experienced it before on my trips to New Mexico. Maybe its the fact that I have to get on 3 planes and that the trip will last all of 17 hours between flights and layovers. Thanks though for your response.

Well yes i too used too suffer a lot with jet lag but to be honest i dont really think it will affect you as you will be so happy on seeing your newborn grandson and daughter it will just completly take your mind of everything. Also try and take naps regulary if you can although if you are out there 7 weeks like you said you will probably get used to the differant time zone also try and have a day off when you come back and just relax on that day.It always seems to help me for some reason and instead of having a week off work i only have to have a day off and also come back a day early if you get the chance so you wont have to call a holiday if you still work.Otherwise i wish you the very best trip and congratulations on the birth of your grandson. May all be well fellow mylotters.
