Yes I also feel sleepy after eating. One of the reasons is the presence of the amino acid tryptophan in white rice, meat, eggs, vegetables and many other food products. Most protein-containing foods have a certain amount of tryptophan. Tryptophan is a natural sleep inducer. It is the precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter which calms an individual at certain amounts. It also increases the amount of sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin.
Another reason for getting sleepy after eating is the carbohydrate content of food which in another mechanism, works on a different hormone, which also results to the production of melatonin.
Whetever the reason there is for getting sleepy, for me, it is always good to take a power nap after lunch. It might not be applicable to other people but in my case, sleeping for 15-30 minutes after lunch makes me feel energetic.

Ahhh, that. We call that "Baboy(Swine) Syndrome" here.LOL You get really stuffed during a meal and then after a while you get sleepy. It happens because your body is digesting your food or something to that effect and it just so happens that a side effect of that is the feeling of sleepiness.LOL
Added to that is the time of day. After lunch is usually the time of day that is the hottest temperature. It would be nice to just sleep off the heat and the food.
Well, that's just what I think anyways.^_^

It depends what you eat for lunch. Meat & other animal products always, inherently makes people feel tired, lethargic & often restless at the same time... a horrible combination. I don't have the luxury of resting after lunch or my other meal for the day, nor do I feel that I need to. We should eat according to what our needs are instead of basing it on how much "food" is around. Then it just goes in one great big cycle of eating animal products, feeling too lazy to go out & buy something good for us or grow something & end up just eating more of the same & then feeling terrible & hopeless & blaming it on something else or someone else, never bothering to change for the better.

Good day asliah!
Feeling sleepy after eating foods is just a normal thing. I also experience that kind of feeling and everyone does. The answer to your question is that, we feel sleepy is because our brains takes less activity since our body's activity is concentrated to digesting the foods in our stomach. Relative to this, blood supply will be partially diverted into your stomach, leaving your brains and muscles to have enough blood supply.
During digestion, it needs more blood to be able for your digestive parts to work at higher level. Since, digestion needs a lot of energy. They get energy sources from your blood who carries different vitamins and minerals, including the simplest form of carbohydrates which are the good source of energy. Brain cells and muscle tissues do get less energy enough to do their function well; thus, you need to take a rest to regain the energy that is used by your digestive systems.
That's the time that you will feel sleepy. I hope this answers your question.

Yes, I do very much so and it's very annoying. And it's the reason I never eat breakfast, or lunch. I will snack though, eating little bits of things like unbuttered bread, peanut butter straight from the jar, pieces of fruit or salad, slices of ham, cereal straight from the box; indeed pretty well anything I have lying about; but I'll not sit down for any kind of heavy meal, because if I do, I have to stop work and feel like lying down. I've not always been like this; when I was younger, I was not affected this way. I wait until early evening to eat properly, and then I'll just collapse afterwards and either vegetate in front of the PC watching a movie or read and then fall asleep for a while.

I have been conscious of feeling this way for many years now, since my late 20s I can remember feeling drowsy particularly after a meal around lunchtime. If I didn't eat, then I would feel OK, but going all day without eating was not a good thing to do, so I always eat around or just after middday. I was told that the blood flows to the digestive system and away from the brain, so that is why I feel tired. How true that is, I don't know, but it definitely has something to do with eating. _Derek

I do not feel sleepy after eating lunch. It is said we need to give some time fore digestion before sleeping. When i have heavy food then i automatically feel like sleeping. It is natural for the body to get sleep when the stomach is heavy. If you sleep immediately after eating you could either put on weight or you could get a big stomach.
Once i ate out in a hotel and my stomach was so full that when i came home i just directly went to sleep. When people have no work in the afternoon, after lunch they spend some time and immediately go to sleep.

Feeling sleepy after eating happens to me also. As I heard this symptom is connected to the way how the gall bladder works after eating. If it is slow, the beginning of the digestion process makes you feel sleepy. I don't know how the mechanism works in medical terms. A healthy habit is to go for a walk after eating, not to sleep, the doctors say.

U might have taken a heavy lunch and that's making u tired. That's what happens to most of us when we have eaten a heavy meal, especially in the afternoon and night time. It's all right to have heavy breakfast because we need the energy from it. When it comes to lunch, try to take a light one, after which walk around, let those food digest well, so that we are able to get our energy from them.

This happens to me also, specially in summer season. I get very much lazy and then I can't sleep also. If I start doing work then I feel lazy and when I want to sleep I am not able to sleep. It is not a big problem in winter season.

Yes the same as you feel I also like to sleep after i eat especially at lunch. That is true too much eating can cause sleeping. And this gonna be the habit of us. That is why when i on my work I try to eat less to make me stay awake. One story that i am at work thought I cannot resist my body needs which is becoming sleepy and there are the corner of our receiving area at the office i was fall and sleep for almost 20mins. Then the guard saw me and he told me to wake up and go back to work before somebody knows i was sleeping there. And that is the cause of my over eating. And from that time i didn't eat too much at lunch especially if i am at work.

Actually yes if your belly is full your move will affected and some tendency will fall asleep if your habbit like that. However, in a healthy manner it is not advisable to sleep after you eating like lunch at least you can take a rest for a couple of hours, the exact explanation I don't have but proven it is not good for us... see you around

It's natural to feel sleepy after lunch most specially if you have eaten lots of rice. Rice contains carbohydrates which can make you sleepy.
I love sleeping after lunch specially on weekends. Though, i would at least have what i eat settled first for at least 30 minutes before doing so.

this is not only in your case. Most of us feel like this, whenever we take our lunch. To avoid this I generally do relax for 30 minutes after the lunch and then get back to work.

nope, i don't. maybe cause of my habit.
This occurs naturally, because human energy will rely on the stomach when you are finished eating.
