Anything in excess is harmful.
Actually, the battery charging stops on its own each time it is fully charged. But the charging adapter consumes electricity and you unknowingly waste electricity and contribute to global warming. Also, I believe that the charge holding capacity will reduce due to excessive charging.

I couldn't agree more. That is why I never let my phone be overcharged. I've read somewhere that overcharging mobile phones will shorten the battery's life over time.

Some of the older model phones didn't have an overcharge protection but almost all the new ones do. I tend to leave mine on overnight but sometimes if I don't go anywhere for a couple of days I have been known to leave it on charge for extended periods of time.
As I said most cell phones now have overcharge protection and you have no worries. Actually the new smart phones use a lot of battery power so it is a good habit to have to keep the batteries topped up. I found my smartphone to be quite aggravating to keep any battery power until I ordered an extended life battery from e-bay. You can get them for about ten dollars or so for most phones and they really help.

Dear Friend most of us have a tendency to connect our mobile phone to a charger the moment we feel that the phone is free and can be charged without even looking at the state of the battery if it is already charged charged or not. We are treating the battery as our wallet where we are refilling it every time we responding some money from it! LOL!
But I was told by one of my friend who is an engineer that we should allow the battery to drain out completely every time till the end before we recharge it back. There is no requirement to keep the battery charged for a long time. I think a fully drained out battery can be recharged fully within 4 to 6 hours depending upon its wear and tear. Any thing more than this I feel would be waste of time and electricity. Charging the battery fr an excessive time can reduce the life of the battery too.
Basically in a battery we have chemicals which react with each other to produce electricity and some products and these products can be reverted back to original form by applying electric power to them which we call as a reversible reaction. To accomplish this reversible reaction to the initial state we need to apply only the required amount of electricity. There won't be any use if we are providing more and more energy than what is required!
Thus I think it is not a good thing to over charge your battery by connecting it to a charger for a longer time as it may reduce the life of your battery. I am not sure about it, but some people say it can some times physically damage your battery too! Thanks !

If your phone is by reputed brand, and you are using the original charger supplied with it, than there is no chance of overcharging, it will stop recharging automatically, i charge my cell phone every alternate day, i just plug in before going to bed and unplug in the morning, have never faced any problem, the battery is 3 years old now..
Thanks for sharing. Welcome to mylot
Cheers.
God bless you, have a nice day ahead.

Once the battery is full it will stop receiving power from the charger. It may not harm your cellphone's battery if your cellphone is of good quality but it will harm your charger as it is still receiving current from the electric socket.

I think leaving the cellphone charge for so long can be harmful. My sisters cellphone overheated because of the prolonged charging time. Smoke rose from the rear of the cellphone, maybe the battery. Charging a cellphone for too long can overload the electrical energy that the battery an hold. It can really damage your cellphones battery. I think in some severe cases, the cellphone itself will be damaged also.

I've seen people have responded to this and let you know what the dangers of it was. All I knew is that it was dangerous, that it could consume electricity and I assumed it could hurt either the charger or the phone itself. I used to have a phone that had it's own little charger inside it's sleeve, it had a separate charger of course, but the charger inside it's sleeve helped when out and needing a bit of a boost.

I can tell you what happens if you don't charge your phone long enough. I seem to always plug it in 5 or 10 minutes before I have to go someplace and then it never really fully charges. I could not figure out how friend's phones were staying charged for so long until I realized after about five or six years that you have to wait until the phone (in my case) said "fully charged" before the battery was ready to go.
I would think that there would be some information in the book that came with your phone about overcharging. If you can't find it there, try going to the website of the manufacturer and emailing them with the question. It would be interesting as to what response you would get.

I really don't know the answer as I only leave my phone on the charger until it is fully charged, and then I take it off. It is usually charged up by me I can see when it is fully charged, and I take it off the charger and unplug it. Take care, and have a very good day.

It would definitely harm your unit. I always do that to my gadgets, now all of my gadgets have power issues. Also consider your electricity consumption. It is so easy to pull the plug, just stand up and reach for it instead of leaving it plugged on the socket. You can save a certain amount of money from that.

it depends on your phone's battery type. for older generation type like NiCd and NiMh, if we charge the battery to long it could damage the battery. but nowaday there is a major improvement in battery technology. so you don't have to worry if you forget to unplug your charger.
