Well, I have been back from my annual family road trip a little over a week now, but I have finally caught up with things enough that I can start this discussion. I promised a few of you before I went away that I would share some of my travels in a discussion, so here it is. (sorry it is a bit long) We set off in the pouring rain on Christmas day around midday after unwrapping presents in the morning. We drove six hours to our first stopover. We visited an old friend of mine the next day which included a relaxing 3 hour drive to our next stopover. The day after, we drove another eight hours or so to our destination which was our camp site (see photo below) at Lake Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains. The town of Jindabyne is the winter sports capital of Australia. The town booms in winter as people come from all over the country to access the many ski resorts in the area. In summer it is still popular due to the large lake and also with mountain bikers and hikers, but it is a slower pace than in the busier winter time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jindabyne,_New_South_Wales We camped there by the lake for ten nights. The days were spent relaxing by the lake, kayaking, hiking mountains, exploring caves and riding our bikes. The highlight of the stay was probably climbing Mount Kosciuszko, which is the highest peak in Australia. This was a 13 kilometre round trip once we caught the chairlift up to the start of the trail from the base of Thredbo Ski Resort. We were lucky enough to have a big patch of snow to play in along the trail. Snow is pretty rare in Australia, but even rarer in the summer time, so we were in the only place in the country where you can do this. It was the first time that my children had ever seen snow, so we spent quite a while in that small patch, throwing snow balls and sliding about! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thredbo,_New_South_Wales We reluctantly left our beautiful camp site to start the return journey home. We only had a short 2 hour drive to Canberra the first day where we were spending the next 2 nights staying with friends at their home in Australia's capital city. http://www.visitcanberra.com.au/ From there we had a six hour drive to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. http://www.bluemts.com.au/ This area is extremely spectacular with large waterfalls, rock formations and high cliffs. We were staying opposite an attraction called Scenic World. http://www.scenicworld.com.au/ We spent most of our day there hiking, riding cable cars and the worlds steepest railway. Scenic World is right opposite the world famous rock formation called the Three Sisters. My daughter and I walked out to the first of these. That is as far as the path goes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Sisters_%28Australia%29 On our last night in the Blue Mountains, we watched TV for the first time in over two weeks. We also had started listening to the radio a couple of days earlier while driving. Up until then, we had no idea how bad the floods were in our home state of Queensland. We found out it was still raining there and we did not know if we would make it home due to the possibility of one or more of the numerous rivers. We started what turned out to be a 14 hour drive home in the rain. We had the choice of two highways to take and I chose one for no real reason but it was the right choice as it turned out that the other one was already cut off by flood waters in several places. It also turned out that we just made it through. If we had waited another day we would not have made it home for days as the highway that we went on was cut by flood waters and towns that we passed through evacuated less than 24 hours later! The rivers were extremely high as we passed over them and there was a lot of water close to the road. What followed then was the bad flooding in Brisbane just north of our home, but that is another discussion! So what did you get up to over the Christmas break?

Typical active Aussies, whatyerlike, lol. Very impressive I must say and I HAVE been worried about you whilst the floods happened, although I did know you've been on this road trip for quite some time. I'm glad you picked the correct highway to get back home! Not one mention of the Ashes but there again you lost so you wouldn't would you lol. Anyway, my Christmas was quiet and the ice and snow got on my nerves. Apart from that, it was great!! Glad to see you back by the way.

Hi Jane. Yes, I missed you too as you were gone about a week or so before I went, so it had been quite a few weeks that I had to survive without hearing your stories! The Ashes? They were on were they? Cricket is a bit sad here right now, but I guess after so long at the top, it had to happen sooner or later. It is definitely someone else's turn to win now! If I had chosen the inland highway route, I would have had to double back and stay an extra night somewhere which would possibly have led to me being stuck anyway on the coastal highway as the waters flowed downstream!

How is the weather there now? Has it improved over what it was a few weeks back?

LOL! Love the oranges..well, they look like oranges! Yes, the weather has improved. The day after Boxing Day there was a thaw and my cheapo Chinese made boots let the water in, which stressed me out. So, as soon as I could, I ordered (online) a British made pair by Hotter..but I've not had to test them out in ice and snow yet because we haven't had any since New Year. We had a mild spell recently and today we've got some lovely freezing fog that refuses to lift! Oh, and not forgetting the huge deluge of rain on Saturday. Apart from that.."Cushty!" as they say in these parts!

Wow, you really do have a waterfront property now! Kind of reminds me of the last time that I visited Caloundra for the music festival! Imagine how many sewers overflowed in Brisbane. I know some people who are helping with the clean up and they say that the stench is sickening. People are vomiting from the smell!

If it was raining as much as everyone tells me it was, then you probably did the best thing by going to work. There is no use sitting around inside every day, might as well work and be paid for it. I just feel sorry for all the kids who had a wet September holidays and now they have had a wet summer holiday too. It will probably fine up next week when they go back to school!

I'm happy to hear that you all had such a fabulous time Bill, but even happier that you all got home safely! You made the right decision when you had the choice of two highways to take. Good onya! We were supposed to drive down to the Gold Coast to stay with our son over Christmas, but we didn't make it because of the floods. The Bruch Highway was cut off by flood waters in a few places so we couldn't get through. We live on the Fraser Coast and suffered some flood damage, but nothing compared to Brisbane and Toowoomba areas. Hope you guys are ok. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us - it sounds like you had a ball and enjoyed every minute!

He lives down at Coolangatta Bill, a block back from the beach - beautiful spot, and he surfs, so it's perfect for him. We live up at Hervey Bay, about half an hour north of Maryborough which got flooded pretty bad; the Mary River runs through town and when it floods, it floods! We are about half an hour north of Maryborough, and were isolated by the flood waters - couldn't get out and no-one could get in! At Gympie the Bruch Hwy was cut both north and south. So there was no way we could have got through to the Gold Coast. Glad you are ok. Where do you live?

Hi Abbey, I did have an absolute ball. It was probably our most successful family holiday so far! Most of our others have been ruined by constant rain or have been big stress out family visits! What part of the Gold coast does your son live in? You may have mentioned it before, but i have a shocking memory sometimes! I heard that there was some flooding in Maryborough. I think I saw some footage from there on TV the last night that we were in the Blue Mountains. We were very lucky weather wise on our trip and even more so in the week after we returned when Brisbane, Ipswich and Toowoomba copped it, we had nothing here!

I live in Nerang, the centre and inland of the coastal strip that is the Gold Coast. 2o minutes from everywhere! I was in Coolangatta two days ago visiting a friend. I was up at Hervey bay in 2008 for an archery competition at the club just over the Susan River I think it is. They are on the left just after the river when you are heading towards Hervey bay from Maryborough. We camped at the club for four nights. I had a good look around both towns and I could see how it would flood there easily. That might change if they get around to damming the Mary river like they were planning to. Is that going ahead? I know that there was a huge amount of protest over it!

No worries. It was a great time and some of the places that I visited were amazing! Other parts of Australia are getting inundated with water now. Victoria, the state I grew up in is having large flooding problems now.

Wow, you have had a good time, how interesting…What a fantastic place! Fancy finding a patch of snow, I haven’t seen snow in years! I am so glad you were away enjoying yourself; I was worried about you and your family when I heard about the floods in Queensland. We know two families who live over there and we had no contact for a couple of days but we now know they are all fine and so are you so that is great! Our Christmas was a quiet one at home although we did go away in January for a week to Victoria where we had a late Christmas with my husband’s large family. It was so nice for all of us to be together…We are hoping to do it again next year…Glad all is well and that you had a fantastic time away!

Hi Paula. I am glad to hear that your trip went well. Are your husband's family affected by flooding where they are in Victoria? I know there are lots of areas to the north and west of Melbourne that have been having a very hard time! What about you guys over there? Wasn't there fires around Perth somewhere?

Who has been a busy boy then, eh? This is where it's at. You must have had some "good karma" for your holidays to turn out how they did. How was the house? Hope your neighbour was looking after it for you. And those tomatoes... you could be making sauce! Sell 'em to your fresh produce suppliers, or trade. How's the scarcity & price of good, fresh organic veg up there now? How's business? You've heard how my holiday went from added on comments to the discussion you started before you left. I have only a couple of things to add. Mum's dying of cancer - probably won't see her next birthday in February & my uncle-in-law in Cairns is also dying of cancer - might be gone this week. Hope the clean-up is going OK up there. You must be busy volunteering your services. How that Wivenhoe dam of yours was operated is having an enquiry into it. I guess you've seen the news.

Yep, I agree. Most forgot that Queenslander houses were built up high for a reason! We could go on and on about it, but it would not change anything. Perhaps those builders who specialise in traditional Queenslander designs will get some good business now!

I have certainly been a busy boy! We definitely had some good karma with the weather gods this time. Must have been making up for all those rained out holidays in the past! Quite a few people said that there were only two sunny days out of the 16 that we were gone, but then it was dry for a week after we returned! While Brisbane was flooding, it was sunny here! Sorry to hear about the cancer in your family. I did already know about your mum. That must be hard to deal with, especially when you keep yourself healthy. We have not volunteered our services directly in the form of labour. They had a massive response in the form of people turning out to help with the clean up. The Aussie spirit has definitely shown itself the last few weeks. We are helping out a customer who lost everything though. She was devastated to lose a signed book by American Raw Food author David Wolfe, so we organised another signed copy for her and tickets to his Brisbane lecture next month as well as tickets to another lecture down here on the Gold Coast. Her apartment block has to be demolished, so once she settles in a new home, we are going to send her some food and a personal blender for free. She was so grateful and in tears when she was told. I have heard about the enquiry into the dam. I think they were so desperate to have it full after it nearly drying up a few years back, that they may have overlooked the whole flood mitigation thing! If they had been letting more water out earlier in the year instead of partying when it got to 100%, then perhaps they would have been able to hold more back now. It might have saved hundreds of homes and businesses from going under. Everyone knew it was going to be an extremely wet summer. It is not like it was a surprise. They have been predicting it for some time, but I do not think they expected so much rain in a short amount of time.

I saw it on the telly. They were saying at one point that they could not even accept any more donations; they were too snowed under! Too many volunteers that there weren't enough people to organize them. Good onya, Bill; that's the spirit. Yeah, it's not really the dam operators faults, more of the people's. I think I've posted elsewhere about this. My wife has gone as far as not feeling at all sorry for those who were flooded & their insurance issues now. They chose to build inappropriate houses in inappropriate locations with inappropriate insurance & were too slack to take the proper precautions. Anyway, that's the argument.

So nice to see you back! I actually wondered about you and your family as the floods there have been on TV here. I was wondering if it affecyed your vacation and I'm glad to hear that it didn't. Sounds like an amazing trip. I really didn't get into much of anything except for enjoying a few days of rest and time with the family. We all had a great Christmas. I am hoping for a vacation in the summer here. Not sure just yet where..but thinking by the summer I will be needing one..lol. I bet it was scary coming into the area as the flooding was taking place..or fixing to. Great to see you back my friend.

Thanks for the lovely comments Jen. It is great to be back here and the PM's from concerned people about the flooding were really great to get. It was a bit freaky driving the final leg of the trip home as I was pretty tired after about the 10th hour on the road and that was when it was getting wetter and darker. I was towing too, so the extra weight affected the car when we hit pools of water on the road or pot holes that had been created by the water and the trucks. There were lots of large trucks on the road as well which seemed to be going way too fast for the conditions. I guess they were just trying to get through these areas before the roads were closed. I am glad to hear that you had a great Christmas and managed to relax and rest with your family. Summer will be here before you know it, so you can have a big vacation then.

Welcome back, Rawbill. Guess you had a very good time out there, and you all were pretty lucky too. My Christmas was nice as usual, having a good time with my family and relatives, plus this december was one of our cousin's marriage so that made it all exciting. I was completely out of mylot during that time and i had no internet connection at my grandfather's place. It took some time for me to catch up things here, but i still haven't started any discussions yet. I hope to start something interesting soon! Good day.

Hi Voldrox. Good to see you here. It has been a while since I have seen you. Glad to hear that you had an exciting time. Sometimes it is good to have a break from th ecomputer. We took our laptop so that we could keep up to date with some business matters, but my wife took care of them every few days. I did not touch a computer at all for 16 days. It was great to get some rest from it! I still have over 300 mylot emails from friends discussions to get through. I will get there soon hopefully.

Welcome back :) My Christmas was tad boring. I had a terrible headache on christmas eve (In my country, we start celebrating Christmas on the eve, then we wait til midnight). I only had 1 gift to open, which was in a paper bag so there wasn't much opening to do. (Comes with age I guess). I spent the Christmas morning sleeping, the afternoon eating, the evening singing at the videoke with my cousins. Next day, I just rested. Then I went back to work. The new year pretty much as boring as Christmas. Haha. I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation and that you're safe.

Thanks for the welcome back. Sorry to hear about your headache. My wife had one for a couple of days towards the end of our trip. I think she was a bit worn out by that stage. Yes, the presents get less and less as we get older, but these days although it is nice to get gifts, it does not bother me if I do not. I do not need much to be happy and I buy myself what I want most of the time anyway. We had a quiet night on New Years Eve too. As we were camping and it was pretty cold that night, we just went to bed early and woke up to 2011!
