Mistreating Animals.

My dog, Isabella, who we call Izzy, is a short haired Chihuahua who will most likely weigh around 2-3 pounds. A friend of mine, also has a small dog, who has outgrown her sweaters that she had bought for her, has sent me those sweaters for Izzy. I posted pictures on my facebook of Izzy in some of these sweaters and this woman who was a "friend of mine on facebook" started telling me that I was mistreating my dog because I put her in clothes.
I'm sorry, but it's cold here right now, and I want my dog to be semi warm when she's outside. Do you think it's "animal cruelty" to get clothes & sweaters for them? It's not like I'm out getting her ears pierced or painting her toenails or anything like that. It's just a gesture to keep her warm.

Settle this, ask your dog. Sadie is a hound and you would think she would hate to have a coat on, not so she asks for her rain coat to keep dry. If you have ever had a poodle you would know how much they love to get dressed up, they are so proud. Thee dogs love to be the center of attention. Now if when you dress your dog it trys to hide or cowers you know they don't like it. Forget what humans say and watch how your dog acts.

I also do this to my dog trixxie. I have a small sweater that I put on her if ever it gets to cold or raining so hard. She also has her own personal blanket.

Putting clothes on animals alone is not an act of msitreatment. If you're keeping them warm then good for you! And if the clothes are not too tight for the animal, and they can still move around comfortably in whatever you put on them, then it's perfectly fine!
How about posting so pics of it on here?? I want to see the cutie!!! lol

I do that to my dog all the time, she doesn't have much hair and on those cold days and nights, I normally put on a small sweater since she is petite so that she won't be cold. That's not animal cruelty, that's caring and loving an animal, how would that person be like to be left out on the cold with nothing but a small T-Shirt or for that matter nothing, I don't think anyone would like that. She probably doesn't have animals so she doesn't really seem to care. My dog is like my princess, they feel just like us, they don't like to be cold and they like to be cared for.
Don't pay attention to the lady, she has no idea what she is talking about, especially when the news are saying every so often to make sure to keep you pets warm.

No you are certainly not mistreating your dog. My dachshund gets so excited when I pull out one of her sweaters or coats. She will actually jump right into lol. She loves to wear clothes becasue she knows its something special. Everyone baby talks her becasue she looks so cute so she feels important when wearing something :). If a dog acts depressed, or can't walk properly in clothes then its another story. Keeping your dog warm in the winter is important and I'm sure your pet appreciates it. Some people just don't understand because they are not animal lovers.

I don't think it is mistreatment. If you're dressing your dog certainly for physical aspects of protection from elements or injury, it would always be fine but as an owner we always need to make sure that the dog is comfortable and would not risk the dog's health.
If your dog is reluctant and difficult you should really think about the reason you are choosing to dress him/her up and react accordingly.

Also make sure that the clothing is made of quality fabric and not toxic.

I think that nature provided dogs with fur coats of their own to keep them warm, but if you are keeping your dog somewhere where the temperature is very different from where it originates then it is reasonable to provide it with additional protection in very cold weather.
I would never put my own dogs in jackets, but they're very much bigger than yours, and probably more able to keep themselves warm naturally by running about.
It sounds to me like Izzy is in lovng hands!

I think my chihuahua, Princess Mary, likes her clothes. I know they love to be comfortable and warm. Princess Mary always goes to a throw and covers herself up with it. She's two years old and 3 pounds. So cute in her wool black and reg checked coat with a pleat in the back and beige fur around the hood.

No I would not listen to your friend when she says that you are mistreating your dog. It is said that it is best to dress your dogs in sweaters during the cold especially when they are small dogs and have little to no fur. When I first got my first Chihuahua, I thought he really wouldn't need a sweater and that it would be okay for him during the winter, then later on in a matter of a few days, he caught a cold and was sick for a whole entire week. Ever since then I have learned my lesson and have made sure he is bundled up during the cold times, and if it is not cold, then I don't dress him sweaters. He is a 9 lb dog. I have another chihuahua as well, she is a lot smaller then him and I know that I for sure have to make sure that she has her sweaters as well. Because I know that she is much smaller then him, she is 4 lbs and a short haired chihuahua. So I make sure that she is dressed up in her sweaters during the cold. But when it is warm, I won't dress her up. Like someone has said above, see how your dog reacts when you put them in clothes, if they get really happy and excited after getting dressed, then continue to do it, but if not then maybe you shouldn't dress them. After I put my sweaters on my dogs they get all excited and start running around, it is like they are showing off what they are wearing and are like look at me look at me. And they're so happy that they are warm. Also, if they are not trying to rip it off after you put it on them, then that is a good sign. But if your dog is small like mine, well seeing that it is a chihuahua and she is 2-3 pounds, then you should slowly introduce them to the clothes if they don't like it. Like dress her in the clothes and give her a treat and also have play time. So they can have a positive feeling about the clothes. All in all, I think that there was no mistreatment in what you are doing to your dog.

Hello.
I think you are misinformed. Dogs do not have sweat glands so they do not sweat like we humans do, that's why they feel warmer than we do. This is the reason why dogs feel seemingly 'tired' during hot season. You can see by the way they are panting, with their tongues out.
So, your friend treating saying you are mistreating your dog is right. YOu have given your fury friend a mistreatment, not because you are cruel to it but because you are misinformed.
Having them wear 'clothes' do not give their skin the chance to breathe and thus, it makes our four legged friends uncomfortable.

Well I put sweaters on my chihuahua Coco because if I don't she starts to get a bad cold because it's not nice and warm, but when it is I let her be with out her coats, but I don't think that is animal cruelty because you are preventing your chi from getting sick and dying even so your being a good pet owner. Since chis are so sensitive to the cold they pretty much need to have sweaters on when it's cold outside because they can't face it on their own that's why I like it when it's hot over here because I really don't have to worry about it and she really likes to soak up the sun it actually looks like shes tanning sometimes.
Anyway chis love it when it's nice and hot outside, but the cold weather that is no friend of theirs because they start to shake a lot and when that happens I usually love to take my chi indoors so that she can get nice and warm and be happy. Well I hope that everything works out for you.

There maybe possible reasons why your friend reacted as such. The clothes might be too large and sagging, or perhaps she thought it was warm at that time. Examine closely the photos you posted and see what seems wrong. The best solution, though, is to ask her.

Obviously this person doesn't know you very well because its clear you care a great deal about Izzy. Ignore her and if she continues, unfriend her.
I wouldn't go so far as "abuse" but I would think less of your treatment of Izzy if you were dressing her for your own amusement or because you thought it was cute. As long as you are aware of and watching her signals and she seems comfortable in the clothes I don't see any harm in it.
I've seen Chihuahas - they have very light fur and were not bred to be in cold climates, its probably a good idea anyway.

No I don't think that's anything like animal cruelty. I think whoever said that just has a vendetta against people who dress dogs! I'm surprised though because so many people dress their dogs I would think that person would know it's pretty common.

People say it is animal cruelty to put clothes on dogs because it makes them look silly. Some dogs aren't made for the cold weather so it is okay to put clothes on them to protect them from the elements.
