You decide

A terrorist had planted a nuclear bomb in the heart of your capital city. You have captured him but he won't tell you where it is and how to diffuse it. Captured with him is his 10 year old daughter. Someone says to you that you should torture her. That way he is bound to give you the answers that you need. But she is an innocent. How can you morally defend such a heinous thing? But if you don't thousands could die. It's your decision. What will you decide?

Keifer Sutherland of "24" fame.

Nope. Never heard of "24" either. Although I have heard of Keifer Sutherland. Last film that I saw was "Miss Potter", film before that "Letter to Brezhnev". I am not a film buff at all. LOL.

Perception is everything. I would make him believe that his daughter was being tortured. If he had any sense of decency, he would cave in. If he was any type of father. Then again, could he be so far gone? What kind of man does bring his ten year old daughter when he plants a nuclear bomb? Really that does some like something that a person who is absolutely beyond. I think this is one of those situations where no matter what step you're take, you'll lose. And really that's what the terrorist who planned the bomb obviously wanted. He wanted to make a no-win situation. After all, why would he have his ten year old daughter along for the ride? Just some interesting food for thought that I thought of.

Now that's a smart answer. Delude him and he might just talk.

That was a terrific movie wasn't it??? I was horrified at the thought & riveted to my seat with my eyes NEVER leaving the screen!!! I worried about the person who wrote the script as it was soooo far out there that I couldn't even imagine!!!!

The movie is a suspense thriller called Unthinkable starring Samuel L Jackson & Carrie-Ann Moss among others. It was at times so dark that I wondered why I was watching, yet I couldn't stop watching just wondering what would happen next. It was a direct to video movie that was put out in 2010 & was on my Video on Demand & I began watching it mainly because I love Samuel L Jackson movies!!! Once it was over, I realized I thoroughly enjoyed the movie!!!

I never heard of that one either and also adore Samuel L Jackson so thanks for the heads up though not sure about the subject matter as you say - sounds very dark and grim.

Alert the authorities & evacuate the city. Only a million people here, it should be done real quick, in an orderly fashion with a "business as usual" attitude taking over in a safer regional city. You have neglected to mention how long we have until the big kerboom! My wife would say "hey great, there will then be fewer idiots in the world once the bomb goes off, let's move to Queensland right now!"

Well if hes a terrorist he OVIOUSLY doesn't care for anyones life. I would protect the child, Leave her with people in a safe place, then well, there are certain methods you can make a person talk. I guess you could try anything, anything would work. (Use the force)JK lol. I have some methods I could use on a terrorist to make him talk, but I can't explain them, too painful. Also never negotiate with a terorrist!

He would rather die than talk. So torturing him is not the answer.

why not ask the child if she knows where her dad hides the bomb?you can ask her after calling the bomb squad right?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

She's loyal to her Dad. She's not talking without some "persuasion"!

that's way your calling the bomb squad first before persuading her to tell you where the bomb is.

This is a tough one. But do you think if the terrorist was worried about his daughter's safety...especially when he has planted a bomb somewhere, he would be with her? If he was a caring person, wouldn't he make sure she was as far away as possible? Or else he doesn't care about her either. I wouldn't be able to torture him/her. The Special terrorist squad would be my choice and I will hand them over to the squad.

Ok, this guy planted a nuclear weapon? Well, there would be VERY long term effects from that. So, on one hand there's torturing a child or many people die and the planet is even more damaged. I'd very reluctantly torture the child just enough to get the answers I needed to save the many.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

You are the first person willing to torture the girl. But it may be necessary to protect all the other people.

I could not do that. If anyone would torture the daughter they are as bad as the terrorist. However, I would probably get a computer genius to make it look as though she is being tortured, I think that's perfectly acceptable. But I would never harm a child for any reason--that is evil.

As with all of these hypothetical situations, you've no idea how you would feel in the REAL situation. I think though that I'd go ahead. I'd probably torture my own loved ones in a situation like this is if I really thought it would make a difference.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

I think that if it was one of my loved ones that had planted the bomb they'd not be a loved one!!

I was trying to demonstrate the extent that I'd be prepared to go to to prevent this hypothetical disaster from happening, not highlight the terrorist potential of my own loved ones!

There is no way in hell I could or would torture or allow the torture of a child. What I would do is get out of Dodge, take the child while notifying authorities to clear the city, and get as far away as quickly as possible while leaving the terrorist behind to enjoy his fate.

Torture is never acceptable. Never, never, never. It is also ineffective. Someone in custody who is tortured will tell you what he thinks you want to hear, which may not be accurate. How can you be certain the person in custody really has the information you want? Since you can't be sure you are torturing the right guy, you have to torture everybody. After terrorizing and torturing this 10-year-old girl while her father watches, suppose you then find out you have the wrong guy? "Oops, gee, we're sorry, you can go now."

you abviously have a know win situation here. i would do everything i could to find the bomb (if one really exists) but i would not lower myself to torture of a child or anyone else for that matter. Whatever happen's, you live with the outcome.

That would be a horrible situation. I hope I never have to deal with anything like that. It would be hard to know what to do in a situation like that but I would diffinetly would not torture an innocent person.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Sometimes we have to make these difficult choices. But I do agree that torturing an innocent would be difficult.

hi pikey oh my thats a real puzzler I would not want to let the thing go off and kill millions of people and I sure wou ld not want to kill an innocent little child, I think torture might get the man to tellyou where it is at least it will save the innocent child. You could take her into another room and ask her to scream like she is being hurt also ask her if she knows where the bomb is and tell her if she tells she will save thousands of people's lives. that is my best stab at this.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Wow, I hope I'm never in that situation. Although if I was, I don't know that I'd believe this someone. Maybe the terrorist is so wedded to his cause that he still wouldn't talk even if his child were tortured. Many terrorists are willing to give up their own lives for their beliefs, maybe they would also be willing to give up their child's life. I don't think that I would want to risk hurting this child. Hopefully I would find another way... That's a bit of a cop-out answer, but it really is a tough one.

I think you should trick the terrorist. Maybe telling him that you will kill his daughter if he does not tell me where the bombs are. But i'm will not harm his daughter ill just tell it so that the terrorist will be afraid that his daughter might get hurt.

In all honesty p1kef1sh, I would never think of torturing a child, however this terrorist is not thinking of my own two, so I would have to somehow come up with a plan to make him believe that his child's life was at stake. But if not since I am going die anyway, I would have to come up with torturing him as if I am going to die he will too.
