hi, im a daughter of a diabetic, with renal failure. its been really hard for us to deal with his illness, since he's one of those hard headed people, but we love him, so we are trying our best to manage his illness. his doctors told him to avoid potassium rich foods and also proteins because his BUN is way up. our problem is, it seems that almost every food i know is rich in potassium, i mean the leafy veggies kind and also fruits. he's now on a diet with little protein, and veggies but we dont know what veggies he could eat and also what other foods he could eat. could you suggest foods or other things to try? that would be a great help. thanx

Hi, mimoy...He doesn't need to be limiting only proteins and potassium. There are other limitations as well. Did your dad's doctor not give him a written diet plan? This should have been done. You should contact the doctor or his nurse for this and if this can't be done, I would like to suggest that you talk to the dietician at the hospital where his physician practices. You really need something that is written/printed so you can use it meal by meal. This is a serious diagnosis and requires serious attention. Also you can search online for a diet plan for his diagnosis (diabetic nephropathy). Usually these patients have other diagnoses as well so that may affect the type of diet he should be on. I wish you and all of your family well in learning how to deal with this.
