With the current pace of technology, gadgets are fast becoming obsolete. I have a 3-year-old Acer laptop and a lot of my techie friends have been telling me that in a year or two, I should consider buying a new one. I understand their point but laptops don't come cheap. For everyone out there, what really is the practical length of time to keep using your laptop before you replace it with a newer model?

The laptop 's price is very high and the laptop's life in using is so short that i always consider to change in a limited time .I have hp's laptop ,but I want to use it for 5 years whenever the has changed and whatever the outside will become.
why do i do like that ? coz I know my laptop could show the effiency and will be not out (keep pace with time),then I insist using it for more time .

The realistic approach for me is to wait until your laptop starts to develop serious problems or completely fails as you say laptops are not cheap we live in a world were our current gadgets or not good enough for us. Your techie friends should not be interfering with your own personal choices though either. I still have a dell computer sitting at home and at the time it cost £999 and it still works fine so unless you have the money or you personally feel its time for an upgrade then you should consider buying a new laptop but really if your happy with your product why change it and face possible failures in a new expensive gadget.

my laptop is over 5 years old. i've had it fixed around three times last year. it's an old model, but after the repairs it doesn't have any major issues for now. i just need to have the ram upgraded and the battery changed, although i use it often at home and less during travel. two computer technicians told me that 5 years is the average usage span of a laptop for most owners. they meant that it is every after 5 years that newer models are made available in the market, so buyers have better choices.
i plan to upgrade my ram early this year and use my laptop for at least 2 more years. that will also give me more time to save up for a new one that will have better features and specifications. that seems very practical to me. i just hope nothing bad happens to it again that would require some major fixing, or worse, an urgent replacement since i also use it for part-time work.
