Hi,dear friends,
I will graduate from university this year. However,I have a lot of used books that I don't know how to deal with them. They take up a lot of space if I continue keeping them. However,if I throw them or sell them, maybe in the future,I would need them. So,how do you deal with your used books?

I like to keep my books and add them to my library. As years gone by after graduation, I realize how I need some info on some things from books I no longer have. If they are a bother with space, I'd recommend you selling them and try to get some $ off of them. If you don't care about the money, you can always donate them to the library, other students, or to the ones in need. But never throw them away!

My school books I sold once I was done with university, to other students who wanted them. But other books I mostly keep. I am not very good at getting rid of books, I am afraid...

I did that when I left school, and with the exception of a few books related to my major I never looked at any of them again. I sold a bunch of them recently for next to nothing because they're old books now. If your major is one where the books have information that might be difficult to find, go ahead and keep them. But the internet has a lot of information, older edition textbooks are cheap and have much of the same material if you do find you need one later - in general it probably isn't worth keeping most of them.

I had a ton of books. Unfortunately i had to move house within the USA and later, move across the ocean to the USA. Each time I elected to give my books to charity. I did try selling some to a 2nd hand place without success. Giving to charity is so much easier and less hassle than the other options (apart from throwing them in the bin, of course!)

Dear Friend
My suggestion is that you can segregate those books which are absolutely essential for your immediate future reference from other books. The other category of books may be given to your junior friends for their use. By this arrangement , you can keep tract of the books at least for one year and as and the need arises for reference ,you can have access to the books concerned. You can also effectively manage the available space.

I sell them to used book stores. I usually doubt I'll need them again and I rarely regret selling them. I think a few times I've regretted getting rid of books, but usually I don't. I have a wonderful collection of books at home that keeps on growing and I don't feel much shame in letting go books that I didn't enjoy. However, I would never give up a book that I whole-hearted loved. Those are the books I keep for forever.

If they're text books and you don't think you'll ever look at them again, it's best to sell them as quickly as possible. Textbooks go out of date pretty fast, so they lose their value. If they're not regular textbooks, keep them in your library. I sell some of my used books on half.com. If they're not worth selling, I sometimes take them to the local library, but only if they're regular books, not books that are developed for courses. I live in an apartment building and sometimes just leave books in the laundry room for other people to take, if they want them. I throw books away, but it isn't something I like to do, so I reserve that for books that are just too old or odd for anyone else to be interested in them.

Hardcover text books(after you've scanned them for future reference-lol)can be used as decorations. Ask someone at a place like Michaels what type of adhesive you could use to bind the books together. It would make a great coversation piece, reduce the amount of space they take up, become functional...Never mind, find a woman who's opinion on decorations you trust and ask her to help you.

Hi strongsz,
If you have the time and the patience, and a fast scanner, you can scan them and store them on CDs for future reference. I know a few people who do that. It is quite time-consuming, but they are able to scan 3-4 books per week, and then they sell the used books.
As for myself, I prefer to keep the books around. They take a lot of space, and they require regular maintenance, like dusting and so on, but I like to know they're available when I need them.
