How can you believe the Bible?

There are loads of errors in the book of Genesis... it makes me wonder how people could possibly believe in the bible as pure truth when it has so many problems to it.
I'm going to bring up one big example from the book of genesis, and hope that you can somehow explain to me how it makes sense. On the first day, God creates earth, and creates light... then on the third day, he makes plants... grass and herbs and fruit trees (fruit trees being the most important to this situation). Then, it isn't until the FOURTH day, that God makes the Stars, the Sun and the Moon.
What the?
What this is saying, is that light came before the sun... which, as we know now, doesn't happen, because the sun generates the light, itself. Then, plants, even fruit trees, that depend on sunlight to live, were growing and bearing fruit, before the sun was even made. Plants need light to live. The best example is if you go deep into the oceans. On the bottom of the ocean, where there is so much water that it blocks out the sun completely, there are no plants. Plants simply can not live in those conditions, they NEED light.
This is just one of the many errors in the bible, nevermind all of the evils that the Old Testament, and even some pieces of the New Testament speak of. So, how can you be so believing and devout to a man-made book that's been around for so long, that obviously has so many errors to it?

Personally, it seems to me like whoever wrote the bible was very stoned or very creative. most of the stories in the bible doesn't make any sense.

Many of the stories are also just remakes of older stories that were told through the generations... so, maybe they were based on some truth, but then they went through a game of "telephone" that lasted for ceenturies, and they got so many pieces messed up, and so many pieces added to, to make them even more magical. Thats the way story telling goes.

Steven Hawkings believe that the there is no God at all....
everything in the universe is there because of Gravity....
and Gravity is the reason's why we are here....
but for me....
God is a form of Gravity or Energy....
it simply shows that Science and Religion are both in the same but different in interpretations....

I think you misunderstood what is written in the bible, my friend. You should find the real preacher and tells you everything about it to believe because you misunderstood it...
The light that is to say in the bible is not the sun only but it define the whole day which we all know there is day and night...
That's how wonderful is the bible, my friend. Because as you read you astonished many things in it...since your probably don't understand and believe about it. I suggest you found the true church which is the most real preachers of God, tells you clearly all about the bible without any fear of doubt

But what it's saying, is that light doesn't come from the sun... it's saying that light is coming from some other source, which really goes against one of the main concepts we know about the sun. Another piece, is that it says the Earth came before the Sun, which just doesn't happen... the gasses that made the earth, sun, and all the rest of the planets were here at the same time, then the sun formed, then the gas giants, then finally, planets like ours and venus and mercury, etc.. even after that, it wasn't quite earth until we made a collision with the moon, long after the sun had formed.
I've talked about the whole thing with many people, including the religious, but the only answer is like yours, just to believe in what God does, and what this man made book says about it. On that, we should also believe the book of Mormon, or the Qur'an... they're really similar books to what the bible is... so why cut them out?

No, if it is daytime where you live, then that part of the earth is pointing towards the sun. If it's cloudy, then you might not see the sun, but it is still lighting up the clouds enough, to make that difference between daytime and night time. However, if you took away the sun, then we would no longer see the sun or the moon, just stars in the sky, and it wouldn't take long before the earth ran out of heat, and the only things that could live would either be deep ocean life, that live off vents, or people who could make shelter warm enough (but for that, you'd need High powered heating, and that power, would run out at some point.)

But the question you are raising have been answered in the 16th century. In fact, if you go back to 4th century itself, St. Augustin have said that the text is not meant to be taken in literalistic sense. So you are raising question probably because you have not read good Christian literature on the subject matter!

Sorry for it being so long after this post began, but I was brought back to it recently from another poster, and I really wanted to comment on your piece.
I agree with you, 100%. The bible is literature, and on that, it's an incredible piece of literature. Its one of the extreme few that are still around from that time, and it shows what life was truly like in those days. It's a fantastic work of history.
I'm raising the questions, because I don't understand how people can believe the bible to be truth, when it's obviously fiction. It would mean the same to say that Homer's books of the Iliad and the Odyssey are also books of nonfiction.

Hi
Yes I agree with you. With due respect to Bible, without offending anyone, there is no doubt that Bible was written, edited and revised by men. And men are bound to commit mistakes. Even if you are typing a simple letter, you can make so many typo errors. But now with spell checker being provided for your word document, one can see these errors easily and edit them. But there were no such facilities when the Bible was written.
As far as the errors that you have brought out, it is evident that they are no typos, but probably it was written by someone who wasn't a science graduate.

Who are we to question God and what He said through inspiration to the men who wrote the Bible? If God said that there was light before He made the sun then there was light. If you are reading the Bible only to find what you consider errors then you are going to miss the whole point of the Bible. You are mocking what you don't understand.

I'm just someone who looks into science and research, and it's really obvious that the bible is wrong... it goes against so many things that we know, and if someone was to come up to your average intelligent person of today, who isn't so entrenched in Christianity that they'd say they'll believe whatever it says, no matter what, and you told them that light doesn't come from the sun, or that plants were around before the sun, you would be seen as just plain crazy. These pieces don't make sense, and it seems like if you are a believer of these pieces without any kind of doubt, then you are seriously blinded.

Im here not to defend the Bible but to contribute what i have discovered from it.
Before i used to read the Bible for curiosity that its just like an ordinary book, all mu conclusion was most common negatives, fights everywhere & killing anywhere you could find in old testament. That ended me declared atheist but to my wonders why i still look up the skies & said i don't believed you. Repeat this over & over again. Until it was unexplainable experienced i had, im sure God touched me. After that the incident i got interest reading the bible, to my wonders i understand what i am reading then proceed to new testamanet, all i realized tears run down my faces while reading chapters.
That & that experienced started my life change & turn colorful, meaningful & destined.
I believed Bible is the word of life.

Hi everyone!
I just want to give my opinion on this. We humans are just mere creations and we cannot compare our level of knowledge or wisdom to what God has. There are many mysteries in this universe that we humans could not contain. You have said about science in one of your comments but there also many things that science could not explain. Our knowledge is limited only to what information is available to us. We try to look for evidences but only come up with theories and hypothesis. We always try to look for errors instead of the blessings that is in front of us. God's wisdom is unfathomable and I believe that everything that happens in the bible or stated there has a purpose.
Well I, or rather we, cannot force you to believe it. It's our personal experiences that fuels up our faith in God. Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life. So if you want the truth, search for Him in your life, in your heart and you will understand.

" 1. when you are sick, and needs medication.... where will you go first??? in the church or in the hospital????"
When you want to study Music you go Music school or Science lab? 100 percent of people who want to learn Music go to Music school. Therefore, Science is wrong, Music is right. Now what would you say of such kind of thinking? Faulty thinking? Yes. Your example about sick people going to Hospital and church is like that.

but thru Science brings man leave earth to step on the moon, then bring back again to earth as safe as possible....
where as, Religions only preaches and explain everything that comes inside the bible that there is no proof, no solid evidence, no scientific evidence to support, a myth, a hoax, a spell or magic, and a word of mouth....
that even in the court of law....
the accuse remains innocent unless proven guilty.....
it simply shows that SCIENCE is more accurate compare to any forms of RELIGION
example:
1. when you are sick, and needs medication.... where will you go first??? in the church or in the hospital????
100percent of emergency people goes to hospital first in the Intensive Care Unit.... and when they healed someday, they go to church to pray that they are already safe and healthy again.... but to take note that the first thing or option that you made is to go to hospital and that is SCIENCE.......
as you already achieve the benefits of Science and you didn't even notice it....

Music contains the elements of science too....
and if you go to Music School...
therefore,
Music School has more of the Elements of Science too....
Music School doesn't contains Religion
even the clothes that you are wearing when you sing in music school contains the elements of science too....
Music sounds would not be in right tune if there is not such experiments done by the inventors before....
you'll be a Bachelor of Science in Music when you graduate????
all of the subjects (not only Music) is the address Bachelor of Science in _______
and it is not:
Bachelor of Music in ___________ (Wrong)
Bachelor of Religion in ___________ (Another Wrong)
Bachelor of Science in ___________ (absolutely Correct)
therefore:
Science is Correct,
while
Music is also Correct....
and you are Wrong

Well thanks, but all it takes is to look at it with a skeptical mind... be willing to question it. Its a really good way to live.

That is the worst thing that you can do to yourself. I pray that you find it in your heart to know God. Because if you do your mind and soul will be opened and this way of thinking that you have now, will change. I respect your belief although its misguided and you claim to KNOW so much. It is not head knowledge that will save you but true faith in God when eternity comes. If you got nothing good to say about the Bible do not speak irreverently.

You're saying, that looking at the facts and evidence, and going through them with skeptical inquiry, is the worst thing I can do to myself? Doing these kinds of things is what has brought us the science and technology of today. It's being questioning of what's around you that's allowed us to have electricity and plumbing and cars and airplanes... everything that is around you was brought through wondering how things work, and looking past pieces that don't make sense, and doing testing to get the answers through that. I don't claim to know so much, I claim that the bible has the wrong information in it, and therefore, has a better chance of not being true, then being true. A Much better chance.
If I die, and God comes out right in front of me and says, "Here's the proof that I exist", then I will absolutely believe it, although, I would just have to know, why he made the bible so will of myths and errors and all sorts of problems. Why not make something more real?
