Punxsutawney Phil Didn't See His Shadow!!! Yippee!!!!!

It's Groundhog Day and, according to Groundhog.org, "The Prognosticator of Prognosticators, Punxsutawney Phil, once again appeared at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob in the Pennsylvania Wilds to make his annual prediction. Phil surveyed his surroundings and found no shadow, so an early spring it will be!"
Yea!!! To all the gardeners out there, you know what this means... Early Spring means that another gardening season is right around the corner.
I know this is just a cute tradition and, actually, I looked up the accuracy statistics of Punxsutawney Phil and saw that he's not all that accurate. He only has a 37% accuracy rate.
The REAL truth is that we will either have six more weeks of Winter or Spring is only a month and a half away. Either way, Spring will get here when it gets here.
Still, it hasn't stopped me from grabbing all my seed catalogs (for the 100th time) and look through them all to see how many new varieties I can find that will work in my garden.
With only another month and a half before Spring officially gets here, I have so much to do with so little time!
Does anyone actually believe in the prediction accuracy of Punxsutawney Phil? On another note, has anyone actually SEEN Punxsutawney Phil in person? (... or would that be "in groundhog"?)
Happy Groundhog Day, everybody!

Happy Groundhog Day to you too!!!
No, I don't believe in the Legend of Punxsutawney Phil. With all the lights they had around him, how do they know whether he really saw it or not??? I do believe our ancestors might have used groundhogs for predicting the weather; but NOT just ONE groundhog. I know here in the Southeast, we use squirrels & woolly worms to determine how cold a winter will be. Much like Phil, sometimes it works & sometimes it doesn't. The one thing I've learned is that it will get as cold as it wants to get & Spring will come when it gets ready!!! I seldom have the time to plant & take care of a garden being totally dependent on friends who are willing to share theirs!!!!

AWWWWWWWWWWWW!!! That bird is adorable!!!!! I wish they came this far north. We have pretty little bluebirds but those, umm, dang, I forgot what they're called already. (Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.) Those cute little birds of yours are even more colorful than our bluebirds.
Well, every weird way of predicting the weather is kinda iffy. Well, except maybe woolly worms and trees but they only predict what kind of winter we'll have, mild or really cold.
I've learned to believe it when I see it. Typically, February is generally a very iffy month because it can be 20 degrees one day and 70 the next. Today actually reached 53 but it's supposed to reach only 32 tomorrow. What I mean is that I'll probably be able to get outside some this month but I can't predict what days it will be warm enough until they actually get here.
Now, if I ever get the right weather and enough energy, I should have way more than enough veggies and fruits for my family and I'll definitely be sharing.

! think my brain is vacationing with your brain!!! I had to go back to the site & look up the name again!!! It's a Painted Bunting. I had never heard of this bird & I have never seen one. I live in Georgia...about 75 miles south of the South Carolina state line, I'm no where near the coast & this bird shows up around the coast of South Carolina. I just might take my vacation to the South Carolina coast just in hopes of seeing one of these lovely creatures live!!!
Yesterday morning, the newsman was arguing with his co-anchor that Phil would see his shadow simply because of ALL the lights around him so the various television stations could get their news feed. The co-anchor was saying that there was NO way Phil could see his shadow as it was overcast & raining. She was insistent that he wouldn't see his shadow. Georgia has its own groundhog "Gen. Beauregard Lee" who also didn't see his shadow. North Carolina has a female groundhog & they made a big deal about the fact that she didn't see her shadow. The newsman had the film clip of the female groundhog from North Carolina when they released her to do her thing. There clearly was a HUGE shadow beside her. He kept asking his co-anchor if the groundhog was blind because she should have been able to see her shadow. The weather girl says that their models show we will be having colder temps for the next 2 weeks or so & after that they have NO clue what the weather will be doing. Two weeks will have us up to the 19th or 20th of February & that only leaves about 4 weeks until the "official" first day of Spring. Don't you think that 4 weeks is an early Spring as Phil & his cohorts supposedly predicted??? All I know is that Spring will arrive when it dayum well feels like it!!! Actually, I'm thinking of going out & buying a copy of the Farmer's Almanac & see what they say will be happening. The Almanac is correct MORE often than any groundhog!!!

I always thought that was a silly thing to do since it is usually cloudy on the days when they bring him out. I used to feel sorry for Phil until I learned he lives like a king!
I'm not really thinking gardening right now. I'd just like to find a way to get to the bird feeder and the garage for some seed without breaking my neck on the 1" of ice and sleet that's covering the ground!

Yeah, he sure does have it made. I read that his little tree stump is heated and very comfy and he sure looks like he eats well, probably better than half the world right now.
I hope you were able to make it to the garage and bird feeder without any mishaps. I know this storm has been extremely treacherous for a large chunk of the country. We've had only rain and very little of that! It's going to be dipping well below freezing tonight and I just hope the roads aren't covered with ice in the morning. We've been extremely lucky this year. (Knock on wood!)
Please take care in this horrible weather!

For years the whole Groundhog Day has baffled me. For one thing I don't think that Phil actually lives in that hole. I mean really, why would he just stay in the same hole year after year and always be home when the man goes to pull him out for Groundhog Day? I think they just get a groundhog somewhere, then put him in the hole and grab him out. By the way, Phil isn't going to see his shadow if it's a cloudy day. Of course he'll see it if it's sunny out. Anyway, I'm ready for spring whenever it gets here.

I had to read this news story twice. I would be more than old phil to be right. An early spring sounds like a great idea right about now. Winter's been fun, but i think i've enough of ice and snow for a while. bring on the sun!

Morning Marti...and many thanks for the lovely card! P.P. or whatever furry little ground-hog's accuracy is of NO "never-mind" to me....I just love fable's and folklore, even the source..whereof! Light-hearted whimsy...which I think the world needs more of!
I can't stop teasing you, about you thinking, we poor Canucks live in the FROZEN North, dear girl! My daffodils are about 8", Primulas are blooming, Crocus eaten to ground level by deer..Hyacinths peeking thru the soil, and Garlic, soft-neck about 8" and hard-neck..6" and all this week, the night's are freezing! I did weed all my Garlic the other day...so soil is soft enough to work! BUT didn't pass the "trou Test"...do you remember that!
Marti....I have found a wonderful site for Heritage Tomatoes, and they are truly wonderful Heritages....and they will group them, to your growing conditions. Superbly fantastic seeds...great viability. Am forwarding the link to you by PM! If you know of any Heritage Flower Seed sites, I am truly interested, as I love Nasturtiums and am trying to find Heritage Ones, as I use all parts of them! Leaves and flowers in salads, and I pickle the seeds...and they are far better than capers!
Do you need any more poppy seeds...had a stupedous crop last year! Take care and BIG HUGZ, Shirley

I once saw a groundhog (whistlepig, woodchuck)with his head stuck in a tin can and wandering aimlessly through the cow pasture. So if he was stupid enough to get in that situation, I doubt he even knew what winter and spring was.

Oh that's awesome!! Although it's an old wives tale but one that we enjoy every year and pray that the ole ground hog is right! 6 more weeks of winter and here comes Spring! Yay! I'm so sick of being cooped up in the house and want to get outside to the fresh outdoors! Hurry up Spring! We're waiting!!

According to all of the groundhogs within each provincial town that celebrates such thing...they've all said the same. Early Spring!
Now, can someone tell me which animal predicts an early summer?
To heck with Spring.
THAT'S the one I want to hear from!
