Do I have to buy a car?

China
February 3, 2011 6:32pm CST
The prices of everything have been rising violently, let alone those of gasoline and derv. But personal cars have been sold violently, too. In the past 3 months,6 of my co-workers have bought cars, they can carry the other workmates together to work and back home,of course they can get some pay. Many of the fruit planters here have bought cars after great harvest, they use their cars to go to the market or carry fertilizer or other things to the fields...... My home is quite near from my working unit,it's very convenient for me to go to work.It takes me about 10 minutes! "Oldsix, just buy a car!"so many times they tell me. Do I have to buy a car following the general trend?

Buying a car is not just about following the trend. If you can't use it more often its like wasting your money. Better to have a car if you really need it and if not better to be practical and choose to keep your money and use it in other things. Think about the things that will help you most than a car. Better to think about it and not just follow about what other people is doing and better to make your own deeds and decision also. Good day! God bless!

If it necessitates you to get a car, then buy one but not because of the prodding of your co-workers.Nowadays, it pays to be practical in everything. :)

No way! Don't do anything for the general trend unless that is what you really need. I think it's healthy that you are walking to your workplace and you are saving money from gas, and you're not polluting the air! Your friends should follow your trend! It's very admirable.

Why spend it if you don't need to? If I didn't have to travel a long ways I think I would not have a car. I enjoyed it when I didn't have one. I didn't have to buy gas or pay for insurance! You don't have to follow the trend!

You might need a spare vehicle sit at home when you need it as emergency or other usage. I might consider this too. I don't need a brand new vehicle, but a used and good vehicle will be good enough for me. I might consider buying a spare one for myself too. If you have spare money, why not think about buy a second car too right?

Well if i was you i just wouldn't buy a car because it only takes yo 10 minuet to go to school mean that was how long it used to take me to go to school walking. I would wait some more, see if you get fired, laid off ect. and get a new job because the new job might be way farther or WAY closer o if you kinda under stand me i would just keep on walking everyday.

My boyfriend and I are planning on buying a car because we live far from each other. The other reason is also for the business that we plan to set up and it will be quite a hassle if we get stuck in traffic while using the public transport. It is a long-term goal for us, but something we are both looking forward to. We plan to make good in the business we are trying to set up in order to save up for our retirement because we are both no longer young. Another reason for us to buy a car is comfort also.

think of your needs and not the trend. if that car will bring you convenience in going to work, then you should get one. Of course there are also a lot of advantages like getting in time always or travelling faster from town to town but when you think you're always in a danger... you feel like give it up!Having a car is a great thing. Like you said you can get in time where you need, you can travel fast, you get rid of the throng of people from train or bus. There are also disadvantages but I prefer not to think of them.

Driving a car cannot avoid disadvantages, but that's not the reason. It's so close from my home to the workplace,I'll listento you all,not buy a car any more.

Car is a MUST around where we live here so that's no possible way we can not have cars since there is no trsportation around and places to places are very far distance; we havetwo cars and yet the gas, maintenance, insurance etc are so expensive... However, I like to have my own car so I think I will still get a car even though I live in the city because it is very convenient when you go out shop or when you travel with your kid.

According to your conditions, owning cars is very neccessary. If it's not convenient for me to go to work,I have to buy a car,but I never follow the trend.

Having a car has its advantages as well as disadvantages. Merely having a car doesn't mean you can use it smoothly. One needs to maintain one's car. There must be some insurance to guard against any accidental damage. There is an overhead cost for fuel. You have to endure all that just to cover a distance that you said is 'quite near'. Now lets review all the arguments that you've mentioned here. First of all, just because 6 of your coworkers bought cars doesn't mean you have to buy it too. You only buy what YOU need. You said it takes you about 10 minutes to reach your working unit, which actually means it's nearer than what I thought. You said that your friends asked you to buy a car. But did they tell you why? Don't buy anything just because your friends tell you you need it. Buy only when you need it.

If you can afford, go ahead. It is very cool and convenient to have a car. You can go places and you can use it for other reasons too, like having another job, or maybe for business purposes.

Yes,your advise is worth considering. But all in all,it's better for me not to buy a car,for I'm not rich and my house is not far from my workplace.

Hi, I suggest that you lay out all of your priorities. If you think you are still capable to buy a car in terms of budget then by all means get one. But if your earnings are just enough, please don't. Buying a car would need a lot of things aside from buying it per se -car insurance, registration, maintenance etc. If you can manage to go in your office w/o a car, then maybe you can just save your money up for future use. :)

What you suggested makes sense, and I think I can do without a car,for I can go to work easily.Thanks.

although having a car could really make your life much easier, in my opinion, you don't have to buy a car if you really don't need it. you should have a purpose for the car if you're gonna buy one. if you're saying that you're just buying a car to keep up with the trend, then it's not worth it. besides, you're working unit is just 10mins away. you can totally save more money if you could just ride a bike to work. it's eco friendly too.

I think the answer to that would be another question: Do you need a car? If you need to go places that are not nearby, then it might make sense to get a car. If all the places you need to go on a regular basis are in walking distance, then I wouldn't bother. I always had a car when I was in America, but when I went to China to teach, I never had a car. I don't think I would want to drive there anyway because of how crazy drivers there were. My brother is trying to talk me into buying a car because I am currently staying over 10 miles from him and I am laid up in a motel recovering from surgery. Once I get back on my feet, it would be nice to be able to get places, but I am perfectly happy to lay around right now. Besides, when I have treatments, they won't let me drive anyway. Good luck with your decision!

Just two things. Can you do without a car? Would it affect your budget if you do buy a car? Owning a car can either be out of necessity or just for plain gratification. I admit I bought a car not out of necessity but because I want to own since I really love driving.

You see it yourself that it isn't a necessity for you at the moment to buy a car. With all the price hike of almost everything especially the gasoline, it is not wise to buy a car especially you can go to work easily.

If you don't need it, then why buy it? So who cares if everyone is having it? Why must you follow the general trend? It doesn't make you less of a person. You said it yourself, that times these days are tough. It is really important to save for the rainy days. Why would you buy a car when you can save more by not owning one? When you buy a car, you have to think about the monthly amortization and the gasoline expenses. You are not buying something that increases its value over time but depreciates. You are actually losing money. If you really have extra money to use, you better use it for something that creates wealth. You can buy a lot or start a small business. In this way you can have extra income for your family.

Hey, consider it from the economic point of view. Can you make money out of the car each month by ferrying your co-workers as well as provide some transportation services when you are free. If you can, the car may end up paying for itself. But if you are buying because of peer pressure. DON'T. It's not worth it. 10 minutes walk each day to and fro is good for health. Don't follow the well-trodden path, create your own. Be different. Cheers!
