Was this the wrong thing to do?

Hey all
At first I felt i shouldnt post this, as i dont really want people to know this, but then i realised that none of you know who i am, so it wont matter if i say. So here goes.
Basically, on thursday, me and my friends were in the shopping centre, looking for a card for one of my friends. We came across some sort of a fight going on between some "gang people" and security guards and police. Seeing this, we decided to sidestep the action, and go in the other way. Suddenly, one of these gang people broke free, and came running towards us. My friends ran into the nearby shop to get out of the way (you see the police where chasing this guy, and the gangster people where chasing the police and so on). And i dont no why i did this, but i picked the gangster guy up, and slammed him into the floor, letting the police get him.
Just to say, i am not a "hard person", i dont work out in the gym, and ive never done anything like this before, and here i was, not even thinking about it, taking some guy down who may of had a knife!
After this, i then was punched and hit a few times by other "gangster" people, who where themselves being hit by police, it was all a fiasco!
Anyway, the upshot of it is i just walked off with a swollen face, and the guy i took down got arrested, as did some other people.
But my friends keep telling me i was an idiot, but i dunno... i feel i had to do it. Am i the only one?

Yeah, I think it was just a rush but what you did technically was AWESOME!
Can you believe you nailed a gangster on your own?
Can any of your friends brag about anything like it?
Hey just kidding.
But yeah, like the first commenter said, what you did was morally the right thing.
Obviously, your friends are just worried that those gangsters may do something to you when you're out alone or something.
It's definitely better not to get involved in a fight of any kind.
You better start working out soon, so you can defend yourself better next time!
Good Luck!

Lol, to be honest, my friends and I the next day were laughing about what happened, and were sort of retelling it to one another, even though we already knew what happened. But hmm... maybe i shoudl try working out so if they do try and get me again, ill be ready! It is certainly a better suggestion than what my friends said, which involves burning the clothes i was wearing on the day, growing a beard, and shaving off my eyebrows and hair so i no longer look the same

I think this was a very brave thing to do. The normal human reaction to a situation like your's is to get out of the way and find safety. You saw something bad happening and you did what you could to help. Your actions just may have saved lots of lives. As far as you know had you not stopped him he may have walked into a store and seriously injured or even killed other people. I'll give you kudos on your bravery.
Now here's the but...I wouldn't make a habit of trying to save the world. As humans, though we would like to think we are, we are NOT super heroes. You could have been badly hurt or worse by intervening. That's what the police are for. You walked away pretty hurt, but you survived and I would consider you lucky. My advice would be to stay out of the way next time, for your own safety. But, like I said it was couragous of you, however "Idiotic" it also may have been.

Yes, you make good points, and i didnt try to do it, i originally tried to avoid everything, its only when there were runnign right at me i felt that i had such an advantage that i reacted like that. But yes, i dont want to have to do it again, but im afriad to say, i would probably do it again if it happened again, i mean, i dunno, obviously i would have to reassess etc, but it was automatic, and if that reaction is the same, its likelky only to happen again lol! But i would never go chasing a criminal or anything like that

i cant honestly say that i can think clearly during times of emergency, but i can also say that probably wouldn't have been my first choice if i had seen that incident. knowing the way i am ( a little wimp..) i probably would've just ran away, but then again i am a young woman so i highly doubt i would be able to do anything anyway. i can understand why your friends would call you an idiot though because you could've gotten seriously injured from this if things didnt go the way you wanted

Oh WOW!!!
I have to say, had you been my friend, I probably would say the same thing your friends did. That you are an idiot to get involve in it. But then, that's what heroes are made of. Not thinking about the consequences, but just do the right thing.
I applaud you for your brevity. Not many people would get involved.
I don't think I would have the courage to do anything like that. Though my cousin did catch one murderer. Geez!!! He said the same thing, that is 'He didn't really think, he just did it'. In fact, he said he was scared about that when he thought back, that the murderer might have a knife on him and he could have been easily killed.

Seems me and your cousin have a lot in common! I mean, there wasnt even time to have a conscious thought, it was like, you no when you are driving a car, and say a child steps out infront of you, you dont think: "there is a child, i shall brake", you just do it, and then realise afterwards that there was a child there, its really weird

It depends,if you do not care about what will happen after the action has been done or before the action. In this situation, you should have let the gang member escape, because there are more than one gang member. If there were 1 or 2 then okay, and besides in your friends eyes they tell you are an idiot, but actually they are jealous.

Lol, when i say they call me an idiot, they dont do it in a nasty way, almost in an affectionate way. I mean, they said something like
"i looekd around to see where you went, and i saw the guy who ran, and i saw you slamming in to the floor! How could you grab the one guy we had to avoid, such an idiot lol"
Made me laugh when they said it

Lol I like when people say basically, it's funny. But seriously, you could've been hurt way worse than that. Of course, it's better than running into a room and cowering right? Cuz you're a manly manly manly man. Jk but maybe it would be a better idea to let the police handle this one as "mall gangsters" vs. "mall cops" because that might acctually make a good youtube video. So why not whip out your phone or something and take a video? I think the part where your friends say you're an idiot is right. But you're a brave idiot, like the a firefighter who runs back into a house when they hear a baby crying or something. Lol I would've ran real fast at the gangsters and scare the shyt outta them cuz it's a bit unexpected. Like when I used to get chased when I was like 3 and I realize what can they even do to me and I run straight at em and soon they are running from me, it's kinda funny.

Im not quite sure that video recording the incident was the best of plans, lol, not quite sure what that would have achieved, but its an interesting take all the same. An im not a manly manly man lol, i really am not, im more of the computer loving geek version of man lol. And i see the point about the police thing, but i dunno, i just did it almost without realising it lol

It seems like you reacted out of instinct and not really from a well-thought out plan. I mean, you slowed a guy down so the police could get him, which is great, (I think you did the right thing) but in my country you'd probably be arrested and charged with assault, because you hurt someone for no reason and only the police have the right to stop gangsters, etc.
I don't think what you did was wrong, but I don't think what your friends did was wrong, either.

Dude I am totally proud of you for doing that. Dont worry about what your friends said. I mean, you could have gotten hurt, but what if that person had done something terrible?
Like, what if you were standing in the street and someone took off with your wallet? Then what if someone further down the street took them down for you so that you could get your wallet back?
I think its worth it and people should do the right thing

Morally you did the right thing but really you can see why your friends said such things as it's such a dodgy thing to do in situations like this but I commend you for taking action I'm sorry to hear you took a few hits for your bravery though. It's just one of those situations though which you need to really exercise caution I myself would want to take action as well.

To be honest with you, i didnt even feel any hits, i was so high on adrenaline it all became like a sort of fuzz, as if time slowed and sped up at the same time. Its sorta hard to explain, and ive not felt anything like it before. But yea, I mean, i can see why they thought i was silly for doing it, but if i knew that the outcome would be what it was, i would do it again at the end of the day, as a few punches are not too bad. It was more the "shook" feeling i had afterwards that was a bit weird. Thanks for your comment
