Mouth breathing cat

I don't know if this has anything to do with me bringing a dog home, or if it's just a coincidence, but 2 of my cats have respiratory infections. Tiger is eating, and seems to be getting better, so I 'm not too worried about him, but Jason has me concerned. He's not only vomiting, coughing and sneezing, and has a fever, but yesterday he started breathing through his mouth. So off to the vet we went. Seems as if he's just very congested, but the vet was quite concerned too, so now he has lots of exciting new medicines to take (if we can get them down him). So as I'm leaving, one of the front office people is reading off a phone number with a 530 area code, and the UPS guy comes in and wants a signature. So she starts to sign it 530, says "oops my name's not 530", and I start laughing. "Now don't you laugh at me," she says with a mock stern look on her face. "Sorry, but I needed the laugh!" Too many things all at once, but at least R signed the darn agreement...

Hi, dawnald....I wonder....could the cats be allergic to the dog? Did the vet say anything about this? My cat is allergic to all kinds of things from some cat food to dust and stuff in the air. I've not had to give her any meds for it as yet but I have to be careful what I feed her and keep bedding etc. clean. She never goes outside so I know her allergies are house and food related. Hope your kitties get well soon.

Tiger has been sick for a while, and his immune system is compromised. Also, he was the last cat to be exposed to the dog, and he got sick way too quickly. The vet did say something about powdery litter, and there is one litter box upstairs that they weren't using until the dog came, that they started using, so maybe the dog "spooked them into it" and possibly the dust is affecting Jason. Tiger doesn't use that box though. Also, their symptoms aren't quite the same...

I have to use the dust-free clumping litter. Allie doesn't seem to react to it negatively. I'm so glad you're keeping in touch with a vet. So many people do not realize that our 'kids' need more than just food, water and litter.

very good. im so glad he finally signed. still keep your guard up kid. is it possible i wonder that one animal can have an allergy to another? cocos allergies seem to act up more when the kitty visits our yard that woman seemed kind of smart azzed to me and rather grumpy dont you think?

I don't know, but it's awfully darn coincidental that TWO cats get sick within a few days of the dog coming home.

It would seem to me that if there is a fever involved it is a virus, or a bacteria, and not allergy to the dog. However, the dog could be carrying a virus or bacterial infections. For instance, I never test positive for strep, I do not get strep symptoms, but I believe I can carry strep. Is Tiger the cat that was going downhill so badly a week or so ago? How did you manage to convince R?

Tiger's the one, yep. I just asked him again. He wanted to know why I was "rushing" but then on Friday he brought it and we had a talk and then he signed.

Could it have got to do with the weather by any chance ?? I've just recovered from a bout of flu series , something which I wouldn't want it to happen again , I wish! I don't know if your Tiger might be getting some bouts of flu plus food poisoning or stomach flu by any chance? I'm guessing stomach flu , because I've gotten that before and it ain't pleasant at all. Hey dawny .. the 530 joke wasn't that bad , I've cranked up weirder jokes than that. Hope Tiger gets well soon.

Well, they are indoor cats, so I kind of doubt it.

R signed the agreement! Hoorah! As for your moggy, I do sympathise as we had a cat that got the flu. The vet was quite radical with treatments and suggested we used Vick's Vapour Rub on her nose to get the gunk out. It worked too. Not that I am advocating such a treatment with your cat but I would dig it out if you have some in a cupboard somewhere..or buy new if it's an old jar.

They gave me some nose drops for him, but I've also heard that Vick's helps. And also that cats HATE it. lol

Anyway, if the drops don't help, I can try it. I know I have a jar in the medicine chest.

This is the top news! At last he signed the agreement, congrats! Well, in this world nothing could be perfect. Maybe that's why your cat is so sick - one problem is gone but another is added. I wish him to get rid of this flu soon. And again - congratulations for the good news!

I would hope neither of them have the cat flu as that is rather harsh on the cats. Have they been vacinated and then you have to have them redone with a booster each year. I have two cats myself and they are older cats so there immune systems are better than kittens and young cats

Sorry to hear your kitty is sick. We all need a good laugh. I love to laugh and just don't care much for people laughing at me. I am SOOOOOO glad R signed the agreement. Ya!! Wouldn't suprise me if he comes back and says you pushed him or something. Poor little man. I'm so bad.

I hope your kitty gets better soon! My cat breathes from his mouth after a rough play once in awhile but it's pretty rare, especially nowadays now that he's bigger. And congrats that he signed the agreement.

Congratulations on R signing the agreement. It saved you from plans b, c, d... What did you do to finally make him sign? Sorry to hear about the cats. Could it be allergies to the dog? I hope not. Hopefully, once you get the pills down them, they'll be ok. How's Dearra? What now that R's signed? What's the next step? Signing off...530 OOPPS.

I just reminded him. He finally got to it. As for the cats, it seems more like a virus or a bacteria than an allergic thing. Both are doing somewhat better, but still pretty congested.

Your naming the cats as "Tiger" and "Jason". It is really appreciable for your kindness. I think you are seeing them as your family members. They are really lucky, bcoz they have you love. And it is really sad that, god is very bad, he is giving mouth for us to talk anything freely, but he is not given the talking power to cats. They are so cute, and they are not in a position to express their problems. We have to notice them. You are really great. How greatly you are understanding their problems....

It would be nice if cats could talk and tell us what's wrong, but an experienced pet owner can tell, because they just don't behave the same way...

Hehehe, I would have laughed also.. it must have been she was in full intense concentration with the phone number that caused her to carry it over to the signature line. I sometimes find the same happening with me when I myLot and my boyfriend is talking to me at the same time. As he is speaking I begin to type irrelevant to the discussion and then I laugh and say oh gosh what am I doing. Luckily to date I have caught it prior to posting the response. I am happy to hear that R signed the agreement, looks like it will all be somewhat over soon.
