What are you doing for your garden? Is it spring yet?

Well, it has snowed all day, and it is hard to believe we will ever have warm weather. Some days ago a friend started a discussion about sweet potatoes and how to grow them. Did you do anything about that? I went out and got a sweet potato and it is in water. It even has one root! I have peas to plant, and I will probably do that about the first of March, or maybe middle. I am really looking forward to spring.

Garden space - This is part of our garden space in the backyard.
Still too cold to think about planting anything, and there's far too much snow on the ground. I've got a great back garden that I plan on expanding this year, I want to extend it further than the length it is in the photo attached. Since we have a large yard, this is possible, but I have to make sure I keep the dog out of it, or he'll do things he's not supposed to do in there. When we moved here, the garden had already been planted, so we got to enjoy some mint, basil and baby tomatoes. The one corn stalk that was planted didn't make it. There was also eggplant and zucchini in the garden. This year, I have great plans for the garden, but I have to detail my plans before attacking the garden. Since it's along a fence, I can do a lot of cucumber and beans, and they'll have lots of room to grow up the fence. I also plan on corn, not sure when to plant it, if I can do so early in the season or not. I have lots of seeds, but right now, I have to figure out where they are, so I can plant them when the ground thaws out. I may even start them inside next month, but the last time I did that, it didn't work out so well as I planted too early. Last year, I had a container garden that did ok, but wasn't perfect considering that it was on a hot roof, so I'm happy that this year I actually have garden space to use.

It does sound like you have great plans. I imagine you cannot start anything that far north until May. Is it snowing again where you are?

It stopped snowing this morning thankfully, I've been out for 8 straight days clearing it with my job. We don't usually start planting until after the long weekend in May, but we get so much sun in the backyard, I may be able to start a little earlier. I know I'll be able to plant flowers in the front, as we're on a south exposure. I wish spring was here now.

Me too. My husband grew up most of his childhood in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and it is very hard to get him to realize that by the end of May it is almost too hot for some things here. By that time peas are basically done, and so is spinach and lettuce. We can plant again at the end of August and get another crop of those.

Hey, now the groundhog did his duty and announced we would have an early Spring. I remember growing a sweetpotatoe and it made a lovely plant. We can't plant anything here but I usually have tomatoes out in big 10 gallon jugs. Several cause I like the pear and the little cherry ones. Yum! I am really looking forward to Spring too! Happy Planting GG

Well Gerty, I can only assume that friend is me unless you have another friend who asked about the sweet potatoes..If it is me, here is my answer..No, I am not going to grow them, because as I researched I saw that our growing season, even if I were to start it early, is too short. So I will eat the potatoes we have and if I ever want to grow them, I'll have to invest in a huge greenhouse that I can keep at a very warm temperature, even when in single digit temperatures.. I am looking forward to spring though and I'll have to at least start my pepper plants, just got to get some good soil..:)

There was a number of us that were in that discussion. Yes, you did start the discussion though. I am sorry it will not work for you to grow them. I do not know how much luck I will have, but I know I will have pretty indoor foliage.

Yeah, I realized later I think that was the only reason my mom did it, for the foliage, but I wasn't into plants at the time, let alone sweet potatoes. Believe it or not, I only recently started liking this vegetable, and wanted to start growing my own..

I've been away from home for a few weeks, so I am looking forward to getting home and getting stuck into the Spring activities. When I left my garlic, broad beans and peas were doing really well, but it was still too cold for anything else. I planted some chickpeas just before I left, but as a green manure rather than a veggie crop. I also had a patch ready to take some new strawberries as soon as we could get to the market and buy the plants. I'm hoping those will be in by the time I get home.

It sounds like it is warmer where you live than here. I understand that you are doing some agricultural study. That will be good to be able to be back home.

All those things went into the ground before the winter and have grown through the snow. I'm studying Sustainable Land Use and Permaculture at the moment, so it will be nice to get home and put it all into practice.

The last time Mum visited Carlisle in October, I think it was, she planted a few daffodil bulbs for me. They're starting to sprout upwards as it's a bit milder now. My Winter Jasmine has cheered me up because it's the only plant I have outside that has flowers on it at this time of year, bright yellow in this case. Oh, I can't wait for Spring, I love that time of year. I bet you do too!

Two years ago, when we moved here, I was all set to plant a garden and got distracted. I didn't plant anything this year either. Another house might be in the works, so that will mean anything I plant here will go to waste. I just can't get my garden timing right. Home grown sweet potatoes would really be nice about now, especially in some kind of soup or stew. A big change from regular potatoes.

We have been making soup with butternut squash and that is good. I know, when things are all up in the air you just have to enjoy the fruits of the farmers' markets around you, if you have a choice.

hi garden gerty oh I do miss having a place to garden. stuck here in thie stupid retirement center there are so many thing I miss that you can have even in a rented apartment than you cant do here. lol. I always had really good luck with starting sweet potatos and watching them root. I even started an avocado that way that was when i was staying withe my mom in their T empe arizona home and I planted it outside as it was two fee tall. and I will be damned some stinker dug it up and stole it.We have some mild days here but it is Southern California so we should have some nice weather now. Here you can grow a lot of things year around as we do not have snow although we have had freezing weather a few times. I love spring always have as I grew up in a cold state where spring and winter are truly appreciated.South Dakota.

You have seen quite a variety of environments and climates, South Dakota, Southern California, Arizona. I lived a little while in San Diego. I was astounded as things that we baby along in our houses grow all over the place there. I had a hedge of white geraniums in the yard of one duplex. I would just break more pieces off and stick them in the ground and they would root.

Hi, GardenGerty....Are you going to plant that one sweet potato? I've been thinking about rooting and planting regular potatoes. I love new potatoes with fresh green beans seansoned with bacon fat. mmmm....The way it's going right now, I don't think spring will ever come again. I'm also planning on starting a small herb garden area in some window boxes. Good luck with your gardening.

When it grows foliage I will cut slips or cuttings from them and rooting them to grow. With the other potatoes I cut several pieces with an eye on each and plant them. I have not done this in years, though.

Some years ago there was a flower bed at work that the plants in it looked healthy but did not flower. I wanted to remove them but the gardener we had then told me to wait as they would bloom. Well, he eventually left work and we got a new gardener. I told him to take out the plants as they were dying anyway and yes, of course you have guessed what we found. A huge pile of sweet potatoes were reaped. So I gave them to the gardeners and housekeepers and they cooked a huge meal and shared them with each other. We had not grown sweet potatoes on the farm so I did not know what they were but of course the gardener did know. Irish potatoes are regular potatoes but just called Irish out here as the Irish immigrants brought the seedlings with them. If you can pass on the info I would be grateful. Plan to grow Irish potatoes and Sweet potatoes this year.

I live in Florida and we even here have a hard time in the winter growing a garden. During the wintert alot of our trees die or get runt by the freezes we do have. I did see that homedepot the other day did have the vegetables bush's out and im excited to go back and get some and then some seeds as well to see what will grow this year. My boyfriends mom has a topsy turby and she has been doing good with that and has had some tomatoes and some jalpenos off of it.

I cut holes in a bucket and grew a topsy turvy tomato garden last year. I actually read about this for growing cucumbers about ten ears ago. I may put strawberries in the bucket this year, or maybe herbs.

Wow it is hard to picture spring soon as we got another 2 feet of snow yesterday, so no gardening for us anytime soon, so it is off to the market for any sort of sweet potatoes for a whole yet. So glad to hear of you preparing though.

Sadly, where I am, there is very little earth that isn't under constant shade from all the old trees. And since I rent, no chance of that changing. I did have several tomato plants last year and loved it, but room for nothing else. Even if I did have room for a garden, you wouldn't catch me out there in the snow thinking about it right now. My old bones need summer sunshine!

Our ground is still frozen and have found in the past that planting most of our seeds directly into the ground was as effective as starting seedlings so I will wait. However, this year, due to need and finances, I will plant more than usual. Nothing beats fresh produce from your garden!

I went out on my enclosed back porch and dragged out the planting pots, the kind that you plant in then just put in the ground. Around the end of March I'll start some vegetables in them. I'd like to make my garden bigger but that means killing a lot of grass and a lot of digging. I'm planning how to do that now, maybe I'll just have the guy who does my yard do it. Killing grass worries me because the dogs might get the chemicals on their paws and get poisoned.

If you can get a large plastic tarp and put it down it will kill out the grass. That is what Grandpa Bob always does, and I am doing it as well this year. Boiling water will also kill the grass or boiling white vinegar. I am wanting to start some house plants or outdoor ornamentals right now.

I thought about the tarp when Grandpa mentioned it last year but Gus would pee on it--it's a wonder Buster doesn't! I'll try the boiling water starting when the weather warms up a little and the grass starts growing again. Thanks!
