Hi I have a miniature Dachshund puppy and she is about 10 months old. We've had her since in the mid of June of 2010. Now, I've heard that Dachshunds are an aggressive breed to have,
and that they should be monitored around with little children. But, my puppy isn't, which, of course she's still a puppy. But, if any of you all have had or have a Dachshund dog, have you ever experience any aggressive behavior? I haven't, but, a lot of my friends don't even own a Dachshund. Dachshunds are pretty hard to come by here where I live. There are not that many in my area. Which, is why I'm asking this question about them. Do you have any thought about this?

Hello DannyWilliams and welcome to myLot!
It is true that you must monitor your Dachshund puppy around little children. Not because she would do any harm to the children, but because the kids could harm her.
Teckels have that long spine and because of that, they are prone to back accidents. You should make sure children don't hit their backs or step on their backs or even hold the puppy in their arms by keeping her suspended.
I haven't heard anything about aggressive Dachshunds, but, depending on how they are raised they may become aggressive, I don't know. But a dog that is raised in a loving family can't develop aggressive behavior.

Hi, Danny...At one time I had 4 dachshunds in my household. My first puppy was a dachshund. I think I've had about 6 in all over my lifetime of having 4-legged kids. Most doggies grow up to be what they are trained to be. Aggressive dogs are made, not born. Of course, this is my own opinion. My dogs were good guard dogs as they always let me know if anything or anyone was on the property. They took their cues from me when meeting strangers. You must take time with new puppies and use quality time in training via praising and loving. Once again, aggressive dogs are made, not born. Good luck with your puppy.

I have been around Dachshunds all my life. I had three of them. They all have their own demeaner. The one I rescued from the human socity was and aggressive dog. But he was mistreated by the people who owned him before we did. He came to realize we wouldn't hurt him and the people that came to the house wouldn't hurt him. He was always on guard though. Our other 2 we raised by us from puppies and I have never had to worry about them biting/attacking anyone. I think it is truely how they are treated as puppies. If your good to them, they will be good dogs. Sounds like you may not have anything to worry about.

Hi there! I also own a dachshund, she's a year old now. What I've observed with the dachshund is its unending, bottom less, and constant high energy, much to a point that one can describe it as hyperactive. I think that what you've heard as aggression is simply their attention seeking behavior of wanting to play with you. Of all the years I've been breeding dachshunds I've never encountered one that was naturally and harmfully aggressive. I think a dog's aggression can only be caused by two things, being triggered by provocation or nurtured in the environment it was living in, which includes as to how its owners treated him.
